A few tidbits from Weekly Famitsu.

DQ-Builders-2_02-27-18.jpg

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has an interview with Dragon Quest Builders 2 producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto and director Kazuya Niinou, who share a few new bits of information on the upcoming sequel.

Get the notable tidbits below.

 • Development on Dragon Quest Builders 2 was decided because the first game was a success. Square Enix received many requests from fans, as well as for elements that could not realistically be done.
 • In terms of specific requests, there were things like wanting to circulate water from high places and to be able to build even higher. A lot of people also asked for four-player multiplayer.
 • Currently, you can build at three times the height of the original game.
 • If a sequel was going to be made, Square Enix wanted to minimize hardware limitations and make it properly. For that reason, they went with PlayStation 4 and Switch.
 • The PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be able to import save data from the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, or PS Vita versions of the original Dragon Quest Builders, and the Switch version of Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be able to import data from the Switch version of the original Dragon Quest Builders. Doing so will get you a special bonus, which is the same across platforms.
 • While Square Enix currently cannot say much about multiplayer, they are thinking about ways to make it more than just “being able to play with others.” They think they will be able to offer a playground of some sort.
 • Production is currently “a series of trial and error,” and “it doesn’t feel like there is time to spare.” It is also mentioned that “updating the game engine is causing the game design to take more time.”
 • As for the story, nothing can be said at the moment outside of the fact that “a traveling comrade / boy named Malroth” will appear. Many people associate Malroth with Dragon Quest II, but you will not have to know anything about the story of Dragon Quest II.
 • Square Enix cannot currently say if Dragon Quest Builders 2 has a connection to the original game. However, it will be safe to play Dragon Quest Builders 2 without playing the original game.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 is in development for PlayStation 4 and Switch. A release window has yet to be announced. Currently, a release is only confirmed for Japan.

Thanks, Hachima Kikou.

Awaken on a vacant island.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be subtitled “The God of Destruction Malroth and the Vacant Island” in Japan, the latest issue of Weekly Jump reveals. Its release date and price are still to be announced.

A blurb in the magazine notes that “God of Destruction Malroth” is the name of the evil god that appeared in Dragon Quest II. Regarding whether or not there is a connection, the magazine teases, “Look forward to future reports!”

Weekly Jump also reveals the backstory and Akira Toriyama-illustrated character designs for the male and female protagonists. The protagonist is the descendant of the legendary builder that once saved the world. He or she has the same power to build things as their ancestor, but is still inexperienced.

While relying on their “Builder’s Book,” their goal is to become a full-fledged builder.

The game itself is set on “Vacant Island,” a huge, unpopulated island without houses or towns where the protagonist washes ashore, and where they will adventure and build things to create a bustling island. However, on this island where there appears to be nothing, what looks to be a man-made temple can be seen in the mountains.

A boy with the same name as the God of Destruction.

The latest issue of Weekly Jump has a first look at Malroth in Dragon Quest Builders 2.

Malroth, who is designed by Akira Toriyma, is described as a young boy with the same name as the God of Destruction. He has a strong face with sharp eyes and pointed ears, and a belt with a skull on its clip. A character of many mysteries, he seems to have lost his memories when he meets the protagonist. And although curious about his past, he becomes a reliable ally to players on the game’s Vacant Island setting. He will help with material collection, as well as participate in battle. You can even equip him with the weapons you create.

"It's still a long ways out."
DQ11-Switch_04-07-18.jpg

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age producer Hokuto Okamoto discussed more about the troubled Switch version of the RPG during an interview with GameSpot at PAX East 2018 in Boston.

“It’s true that the Nintendo Switch version is under development at this moment in time,” Okamoto told GameSpot. “Specifically with regards to the development, this game was developed on the Unreal Engine, but the version for Unreal Engine needs to be updated, I suppose, in order to support Switch. In that sense, the development is still expected to take a very long time. It’s still a long ways out.”

Hokuto made clear that the Switch version will definitely be released in the west, and that the while the team considered holding back the PlayStation 4 version to launch simultaneously with the Switch version, it ultimately decided against it.

“Of course, we did consider releasing the PlayStation 4 and Switch version around the same time if that was even a possibility, but right now the outlook for the Switch version is still unclear at this moment in time,” Okamoto said. “The Japan team, they wanted to release Dragon Quest a XI and bring it overseas as soon as possible for our fans overseas, which is why they proceeded with the PlayStation 4 [and] Steam version this time.”

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of Elusive Age will launch for PlayStation 4 and PC on September 4 in North America and Europe.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 set after the events of Dragon Quest II

Introducing the Hargon Order.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 is set in the world of Dragon Quest II following the events of its story, the latest issue of Weekly Jump reveals.

In Dragon Quest II, the corrupt cleric Hargon (who planned to destroy the world by sacrificing his own life to summon the God of Destruction) and the God of Destruction Malroth were defeated by the descendants of the heroes, and peace visited the land, but a religious order that inherited Hargon’s intentions appeared with the intention of eradicating the Builders.

The peace that came after Hargon’s death collapsed with the rise of the “Hargon Order,” whose goal is to destroy the world. The Hargon Order spearheads the destruction of towns and castles all over the world. The earth falls into ruin, and there are little remains left of peoples’ lives.

But for a religious order whose goal is to destroy the world, a Builder with the power to create things is a major hindrance. The protagonist of Dragon Quest Builders 2, a Builder, was captured by the Hargon Order and thrown into jail.

A previous update introduced a boy named Malroth, who has the same name as the God of Destruction Malroth. A blurb in Weekly Jump teases that there seems to be some sort of secret surrounding him.

Gliding, dashing, diagonally-shaped blocks, and more.

The latest issue of Weekly Jump has new information on Dragon Quest Builders 2, introducing more information on the game’s story and evolved adventure elements.

When the protagonist who washes ashore the game’s “Vacant Island” setting begins exploring, they hear a mysterious voice, which tells them to head to the top of the island’s mountain.

There, they discover a mysterious stone monument. The protagonist also discovers that there are stone pillars all over the island, which are engraved with “trials” they must pass. According to the voice, overcoming these trials is the path to the protagonist becoming a Master Builder.

There are five marks engraved onto the stone monument at the top of the mountain. You can see these crests by closely examining the stone monument. As for what significance these crests carry, that has yet to be revealed.

The game’s evolved adventure elements include swimming underwater, gliding with the wind mantle, waterfalls, making diagonally-shaped blocks, and high-speed movement through dashing.

"We’re still making it," producer assures.

DQ11-Switch_06-19-18.jpg

The Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age still has “many things” that need to be worked out, producer Hokuto Okamoto told Polygon at E3 2018.

“We’re making it,” Okamoto said regarding the Switch version. “We’re still making it. I can’t say anything more.”

Okamoto continued, “When we first announced [Dragon Quest XI], the Switch hadn’t come out yet, and the development kit also wasn’t finalized. The hardware specs weren’t out yet, but we were like, ‘We can manage this. We can put this out on the Switch.’”

Okamoto would not say how long “taking care of all those many things” that need adjustments before the Switch version is released would take.

Plus, more non-responses about Final Fantasy VII Remake.

DQ11-Square-Switch_06-25-18.jpg

During the Square Enix Holdings 38th General Meeting of Stockholders last week, the company answered various questions regarding Dragon Quest XI for Switch, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the potential of future Dragon Quest remakes.

Here are the quotes, via Suzukin Online:
Question: Regarding the additional elements in the Switch ports of Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Heroes I & II, are there plans to add those to the PlayStation 4 versions as downloadable content? Also, will the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI have additional elements?

Yuu Miyake: “It’s the first time we were porting both Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Heroes I & II just as they are. Up until now, the content [of our ports] has changed a fair amount. PlayStation 4 and Switch have a quite different customer base, and a bit of time has passed, so we have to make up the difference one way or another. Giving this back to the PlayStation 4 version would be difficult. I can’t say anything about Dragon Quest XI. (Laughs.) There are promotional plans in the works from here on out so we’ll be releasing more information when the time comes.”

Question: Regarding Final Fantasy VII Remake, it’s been three years since it was announced at E3 2015. About what percentage has development progressed?

Shinji Hashimoto: “I can’t say a single word about that. As it has been reported, we took a second look at the development structure and continued from there. It’s certainly hitting its milestones accordingly.”

Yosuke Matsuda: “There is a lot being said about it, but it’s progressing as it should so please don’t fret. Things are coming along well.”

Question: Outside of Final Fantasy VII Remake, is there also a possibility for HD remakes of Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II? The series just celebrated 30 years, so I’d like to ask about that.

Yuu Miyake: “We’d love to do it. Creating Dragon Quest XI as a full HD game has proved rather challenging. Where would it be best to focus our resources? There was talk about doing a remake of Dragon Quest III about four or five years ago, but when push comes to shove, wouldn’t it be better to make Dragon Quest XII instead? (Laughs.) There are other series and new titles lined up, so I think it would depend on the timing. At the moment we don’t have any plans for it, but there is room for discussion.”
