DQXI-Direct_06-21-17.jpg

Nintendo hosted a Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time-themed Nintendo Direct today, revealing a host of details specific to the 3DS version of the game. Among those details, it was revealed that players will be able to take on various quests in which they travel to the worlds of past Dragon Quest games.

Here are all the new details:

  • In 2D mode, there are secret locations called “Hidden Spots” that you can find.
  • In 3D mode, there are symbol-based encounters. By using the A button, you can perform a preemptive attack.
  • 2D mode uses random encounters.
  • The bottom screen displays the map. You can switch between the full map and the area map.
  • There is a “Travel Memories” feature that lets you look back on events in 2D and 3D modes.
  • The circle pad is used for 3D screen movement, while the d-pad is used for 2D screen movement.
  • The 3DS version uses “StreetPass” functionality.
  • The main element of StreetPass sees players interacting with a race known as the Yocchi.
  • The Yocchi will request that you rescue the Yocchi in critical situations that you encounter along your journey.
  • The key to rescuing Yocchi is a dungeon called the “Labyrinth Beyond Time.”
  • You can form a party of up to eight Yocchi from among the Yocchi you gather, and send them off into the dungeon.
  • In the dungeon, you can choose whether to control the Yocchi directly or proceed automatically. Choosing the latter means both movement and battles are automatic.
  • There are treasure chests and you can obtain items in the dungeon.
  • The abilities of each Yocchi differ, and various types exist from weak to strong. They will not return if they’re killed by the enemy. You can gather Yocchi in the field or from other players through StreetPass.
  • By defeating the “Gate Keeper” awaiting at the end of the dungeon, you will obtain an “Adventure Log Password.”
  • By giving the Adventure Log Password to the Yocchi elder, you can go the worlds of past Dragon Quest games.(In the Nintendo Direct, we see the player visit the worlds of Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest V.)
  • There are problems occurring in the worlds of past Dragon Quest games, and resolving them has something to do with saving the Yocchi.
The Nintendo Direct also revealed that starting today, 3DS users in Japan will be able to pre-load Dragon Quest XI from the Nintendo eShop.
Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time will launch for PlayStation 4 and 3DS on July 29 in Japan. A Switch version is also planned, but has yet to be shown or dated.

Yosuke Saito, Yuji Horii, and Takeshi Uchikawa interviewed in Famitsu.
DQ11-Fami_07-25-17.jpg

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has an interview with Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time producer Yosuke Saito, game designer Yuji Horii, and director Takeshi Uchikawa, who share various new details about the game.

Get the tidbits below.

  • The plan from the beginning was to release Dragon Quest XI on PlayStation 4 and 3DS.
  • Regarding the PlayStation 4 version, Horii said that he wants users to play together with family and friends on a big screen.
  • Since the hardware specifications of PlayStation 4 and 3DS are completely different, it was easy to draw out the benefits of each hardware.
  • Originally, all of the music was supposed to be completely new, but since there was a lot of homage material, they also used music from previous entries in the series.
  • The concept of the game as a whole is a “return to origin” and the “story of a hero.” However, they were not only aiming for a return to origin, as Horii hoped to create something that would simultaneously become a new starting point.
  • The theme of Dragon Quest XI is the “chased hero.” As for what kind of existence the hero is, that will be answered through the story.
  • (Regarding the appearance of Loto / Erdrick) His appearance does not mean that those who have never played the Dragon Quest series will not be able to enjoy Dragon Quest XI. It can be enjoyed 100-percent without knowledge of previous games. On the other hand, they would like players who are interested in Dragon Quest XI to check out previous entries in the series. As for the meaning behind his appearance, that is a secret. They do not want to give any preconceptions.
  • The design of the last boss is truly amazing. It is a final boss that could only have been designed by Akira Toriyama.
  • They paid mind “not to create any useless characters.” Since they are really delving properly into the characters, they hope that players take a liking to the entire party.
  • Whether or not to include voice acting was a significant debate during development. They wanted to protect the traditional style of Dragon Quest. Voice-over recording would take considerable time, and would make it difficult to change the script later on. Horii was also fixated on seeing the story through to the very end this time. Horii did tuning and changed details of the dialogue until the end of the end.
  • There were adjustments as not to part with the fact that the player is the protagonist. For example, Horii said that they avoided expressions for the protagonist such as “getting angry” as much as possible. When he is angry, the protagonist shows it only by eye movement, not body language.
  • In creating Dragon Quest XI in Unreal Engine 4, they first did a technical test. Dragon Quest III‘s continent of Aliahan (although not in its entirety) was chosen as the subject. In other words, they created a PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest III. They made models of the hero, his mother, the Warrior, Priest, and Mage, Aliahan castle and the castle town, as well a pointlessly high-quality king, and verified the size of the map. The test version took a significant amount of time and labor, but was exciting and fruitful. Since it was only a technical test, they did not do any optimization. If the opportunity presents itself, they would like to showcase the PlayStation 4 technical test of Dragon Quest III.
  • Since the L2 button on PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller is located near the decision button, you can play with only your left hand while doing something else.
  • “Tactics” can also be set for the protagonist, which should also make it easier to earn experience points.
  • The protagonist can be removed from the party.
  • “Restricted Play” is interesting for those who use the Share feature. They recommend using the “Ashamed Curse” restriction.
  • There are no plans for downloadable content.
  • An Internet connection is not required, but if you connect online after clearing the game, there may be a little something nice. This does not mean that there is online play. But again, there may be a surprise if you connect to the Internet. They hope someone will discover it.
  • They want everyone to play Dragon Quest XI until the end.
  • Horii loves surprises, so there will often be surprises during the course of the story.
  • Since the story will change again and again, even when you think “so this is what it is basically about,” the truth is that there will be things behind the scenes that you will not understand until the very end.
  • Even compared to the surprises of previous Dragon Quest titles, the content of Dragon Quest XI is considerably surprising.
  • Development started on PlayStation 4, but they decided that they could also start making the 3DS version in the middle of production. (Horii)
  • At the beginning of the 3DS version’s development, the field map was a little bigger. But once they dropped the map into 2D mode, the 2D mode map became too big.
  • Since there are two modes in the 3DS version, there were inevitably inconsistencies due to differences in appearance and specifications. But they pulled through with various ideas.
  • In both the PlayStation 4 and 3DS versions, the number of items that can be picked up, such as through shiny spots on the field or treasure chests, has been adjusted to be the same. However, there is a difference regarding elements that are only in one version of the game. It is easier to discover treasure chests in the 3DS version’s 2D mode.
  • “Delcadar” (a city in Dragon Quest XI) has a similar ring to “Delcondar” from Dragon Quest II (known as “Osterfair” in the English localization), but the similarity was truly only by chance.
  • They aimed to make Dragon Quest XI relatively easy to recognize as a homage. There are masquerade balls and merchant brothers who compete with each other for price cuts.
  • “Puff-Puff” is a Dragon Quest element that has been passed down for some time, so they want to do it well.
  • Mahjong was proposed as a casino game, but it ended up not happening. (Uchikawa)
  • While there is a problem with the “Spell of Restoration” in that users can cheat, they wanted to include it. They want users to play around with the Spell of Restoration. There may even be interesting things that occur as a result.
  • If you play normally, there shouldn’t be many things that stop you in that you have to raise your level.
  • They would rather players not rush through the game, but thoroughly enjoy it. Since there is little stopping, they want you to progress without looking up guides as much as possible.
  • You can play quests even after clearing the game.
  • They want you to talk to your party members if you get a little lost.
  • Dragon Quest XI is not only a compilation of the series thus far, it is a fresh start for the series.
Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time will launch for PlayStation 4 and 3DS on July 29 in Japan. A Switch version is also planned, but has yet to be shown or dated.

Monsters who have lived long and changed in appearance.

The latest issue of Weekly Jump introduces a new type of monster that appears in Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time called “reincarnated monsters.”
Reincarnated monsters are monsters who have lived long and whose appearance has changed. They are a rare encounter, and thus may also drop rare items. Reincarnated monsters pictured in the magazine include the violent panda, golden cone, heart knight, and cactus gold. There are also quests that task players with defeating reincarnated monsters.

The teaser text for the next issue of Weekly Jump’s Dragon Quest section at the bottom of the page teases “the super latest information on a certain title.” Perhaps next week we will finally get a release date for Itadaki Street: Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary?

Dragon Quest III remake... maybe?

DQ-Series-Hiring_10-05-17.jpg

Square Enix is recruiting a technical artist for the Dragon Quest series who will work with Unreal Engine 4.

Here’s the job description:
Job Outline
As a Dragon Quest series technical artist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Creation of shaders in Unreal Engine 4
  • Inspection, as well as proposal, of expression techniques in order to enhance quality
  • Artist workflow organization and improvement
  • Coordinate with team leads
Job Appeal
You can be involved in a project in the national RPG series, Dragon Quest. Proposals of new expression techniques, workflow organization, and such are very important and indispensable to the project. It’s a big responsibility, but it is a position that is very much worth the effort.
The PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which launched alongside a 3DS version in Japan on July 29, was the first entry in the Dragon Quest series to use Unreal Engine 4. However, before its production, Square Enix first rebuilt the continent of Aliahan from Dragon Quest III in Unreal Engine 4 as a technical test. Given both that and today’s job listing, could it be that Square Enix is moving forward with a remake of Dragon Quest III?

Of course, it is also possible this job is related to work on the still unreleased Switch version of Dragon Quest XI.

The Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is developed using Unreal Engine 4, series creator Yuji Horii said at Epic Games Japan’s Unreal Fest East 2017 at Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center today.

Several Twitter users who attended the event reported Horii as confirming the Switch version is developed in Unreal Engine 4, suggesting that it is a port of the PlayStation 4 version rather than the 3DS version. Horii questioned whether he could talk about the Switch version being developed in Unreal Engine 4, to which Square Enix programmer Mitsuru Kamiyama replied, “you already said it!” It should be noted that Unreal Engine 4 did not officially support Switch until version 4.15, while Dragon Quest XI was originally developed in version 4.13.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age launched for PlayStation 4 and 3DS in Japan on July 29. A western release is planned for 2018, but platforms have yet to be announced.

The Switch version of Dragon Quest Builders will launch on February 9 in North America and Europe, publisher Nintendo announced.

In Japan, the Switch version will launch on March 1.

Here is an overview of the game, via Nintendo:
This charming game offers a new experience in the classic Dragon Quest series, allowing players to reconstruct towns using gathered building materials, fight monsters in real-time battles and meet memorable characters throughout a sprawling RPG. And just like every game on Nintendo Switch, this constructive adventure can be played at home or on the go.

Dragon Quest Builders features a large world to explore, including hidden treasures to discover and epic structures to build. Players can use their creativity to fulfill characters’ requests and build incredible towns using not only fun materials, but also their imaginations. In Terra Incognita – the game’s free-build mode – players can even upload their creations online, or download buildings made by other players.

Playing Dragon Quest Builders on Nintendo Switch will offer players experiences and items exclusive to this version of the game. This includes the ability to gather rare crafting materials and battle enemies while riding the powerful (and adorable) Great Sabrecub, as well as additional crafting options for more robust building customization options.

'Dragon Quest XI has features you’d often see in open-world games with its vast fields, camping, and mounts. The game’sdesigner, writer, and series creator Yuji Horii said in an interview that Square Enix originally considered making Dragon Quest XI an open-world game, kind of like

During the interview, Yuji Horii talked about the idea of Dragon Quest XI started from his desire to make a Dragon Quest game that told a time-themed story, and something that can make the players feel the 30 years of the Dragon Quest series’ history.

Yuji Horii: “Well, at first we thought about taking on the very first challenge [for the Dragon Quest series] of an open-world title.”

Huh! An open-world game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild saw great success with the very same challenge, but to think that Dragon Quest had the same idea.
Yuji Horii: Ahh, the new Zelda game was fun. Of the games I’ve been hooked to in recent years, it would be that and Candy Crush Saga [laughs].

However, after thinking about it as a turning point that is the 30th anniversary for Dragon Quest, we decided that because the stories we make are linear to a degree, we could deviate to an extent with a taste of some open-world gameplay.

While open-world games offer plenty of freedom, they are a double-edged sword. It may be difficult for some players to know what they need to do next. And I also I believe that it is difficult to create a flow for a big story in a world that lets you go just about anywhere from the start.

As expected of the man who enlightened Japanese gamers with a kind RPG told with a linear story. Before Dragon Quest was an era with games such as Wizardry and Ultima, RPGs that were difficult for beginners to jump into.
Yuji Horii: Yes, when I first made Dragon Quest, I thought about making an RPG that uses a story as a rail, a ‘rail that provides assurance so that you can take as many detours as you want.’

I’ve been playing RPGs since the earlier years, and I’ve always thought ‘what a fun system!’ on one hand but unfortunately ‘we’re not provided with the game’s objective, so it must be difficult for new players…’ on the other. So that’s when I thought ‘how about making a story that is told on a single rail.’ That would end up becoming the very first Dragon Quest.

But you know, that rail is ‘just there’ because that’s where it belongs. If you feel like going away from it, then it is okay to go away from it. If you ever think ‘I wonder what’s over there?’ then feel free to distance yourself from the rail as much as you’d like.

Dragon Quest XI is available in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. The game releases in the West in 2018. A release has yet to be announced for the Nintendo Switch version.
