Dragon Quest Builders Hints At Our Avatar’s Identity . October 20, 2016 . 12:00pm

Dragon Quest Builders never comes out and reveals its legendary builder’s identity,
but it certainly seems like he or she could be a very familiar face. Or, maybe this person is someone just like us!

Dragon Quest Builders is an open-ended game. While the campaign does have a story, as well as lore offered through books, letters, and interactions with characters, you’re allowed to come to your own conclusions some situations and characters. All we really know for sure is that it is set after the bad ending of the original Dragon Quest. Yet, it’s very easy to come up with various theories as to the identity of the avatar. Depending on your perspective, you may come to different conclusions. I’ve thought up three that could all fit quite well.

Note: there will be spoilers for Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest Builders in this article.

My favorite theory is that Dragon Quest Builder’s legendary builder is actually the hero of Dragon Quest. In the original game’s bad ending, Dragonlord offers the hero an opportunity to rule by his side. When you accept, he says, “Then half of this world is thine, half of the darkness, and… If thou dies, I can bring thee back for another attempt without loss of thy deeds to date. Thy journey is over. Take now a long, long rest.”

What happens when Dragon Quest Builders begins? Your avatar wakes up in a grave. Rubiss, the goddess, helps you get your bearings. But, your character isn’t happy about making time to listen to her speeches. While you never hear his or her actual commentary, you get an idea of the responses. At the outset, your character comes across as impatient and a bit self centered. Not great for a hero. Except, Rubiss makes some things very clear as you exit this tomb. The first is that you have awoken from a long slumber. The second is that being unable to remember your past may be a blessing. The third is that you aren’t a hero.

All three of these things make sense if Dragon Quest Builders’ main character is the same hero who chose the bad ending in Dragon Quest. You certainly aren’t a hero anymore, after agreeing to the Dragonlord’s proposal. And you very obviously would have had a long rest after the events of that game. Plus, the original game’s text does imply that you can be resurrected if you die, which the original hero definitely did. Given what happened, it is best you don’t remember, since you may repeat history if you did. Someone who had been alive before the bad ending would still remember how to create things. Sleeping in beds gives you access to “memories” from Dragon Quest in your dreams. Plus, your character can have quite a smart mouth when interacting with people around Alefgard.

While it is possible that people playing Dragon Quest Builders are following a fallen version of the original hero, there’s another Dragon Quest character that may also fit the bill. We’re never told exactly when Dragon Quest Builders takes place, but it’s enough time that the towns from the game have fallen into ruin, but people like Larouche have had an accurate oral history passed down and a book like the Cantlin Chronicle has survived. About 100 years sounds about right, doesn’t it? After all, there was an apocalyptic event when the bad ending occurred, and the influx of monsters could have immediately wiped out towns. It certainly seems like the Cantlin fortress fell fairly quickly. So, if Dragon Quest Builders is about 100 years after Dragon Quest, it would be about the right time for the Prince of Midenhall to show up.

Dragon Quest Builders’ male avatar looks exactly like the Prince of Midenhall, while the female avatar looks like a palette-swapped version of him. But it isn’t just about the appearance. There are other elements that suggest they could be related. Dragon Quest II’s hero was the only one in the series unable to use magic. Who else can’t use magic? The legendary builder can’t. There’s also a sign of a shared lineage. The Prince of Midenhall was a descendant of Erdrick, as was Dragon Quest’s hero. Since our characters are seeing dreams based upon that hero’s memory, then getting a message saying he or she can’t tell whose memories they are, it could suggest they’re seeing these thoughts due to being part of the legendary family. This would also explain why our avatar is still comfortable using a sword and shield, as those were the Dragon Quest II’s hero’s primary weapons.

But what about Rubiss saying it’s best the player doesn’t remember the past and suggests he or she isn’t a hero? Well, because the hero chose Dragon Quest’s bad ending, Dragon Quest II never happened. That means this character, who could have been the Prince of Midenhall and a hero, isn’t. It could be a blessing that the past is forgotten because it was tragic, due to the whole Dragonlord taking over everything.

My final theory only works after you’ve actually seen the ending. What if it was all a dream? No, seriously, what if it was? After you’ve beaten the Dragonlord, saved the day, and enjoyed a final feast with your friends, you wake up in what appears to be a normal, happy Alefgard. One of your employees asks if you had a nice dream while napping on the job.

There are a number of clues here that suggest this is happening in the “real world” and quite current. One is that your character’s employee has text that’s clearly showing a dialect and accent, much like the flavorful localizations in games like Dragon Quest VII. He wakes you up with a, “Mornin’ Boss! ‘Ad a nice night, did ya?” He also says, “You was ‘ammerin’ away in yer sleep, wiv a massive grin plastered over yer mug! Wot were ya dreamin’ abaht this time?” This is notable, as the characters we come across in Dragon Quest Builders don’t tend to have regional accents, despite our travels around Alefgard. This could be due to the world’s circumstances, as nomadic people would develop different speech patterns, but it could also be attributed to our character not hearing other dialects in his or her dream because he or she doesn’t use them.

Another is the project they’re working on. It’s a project that is turning Tantegel town and Tantegel castle into one city. When Dragon Quest was first released outside Japan, the castle was Tantegel and town Brecconary. They were separate locations. By the time Dragon Quest II occurs, the two have been combined into one location – Tantegel. This means events of Dragon Quest happened not long ago in Dragon Quest Builders’ real world, since the town and castle haven’t become one place yet. Dragon Quest’s adventure is still fresh in our avatar’s mind, which means he or she would have dreams in that dream that accurately went over what happened before the events of Dragon Quest Builders. Such an event being recent would also explain why he or she would have this dream, perhaps thinking about an alternate outcome if things had gone wrong. Their job, as a builder, influenced the matter in which the day could be saved again.

All three of the theories Dragon Quest Builders seemed to suggest as I played illustrate exactly what is so great about this game. It gives you a hint of lore and story, but doesn’t specifically say certain things are or aren’t true. Your character can be whoever you want him or her to be. You could even go ahead and think of the avatar as a hero, even if Rubiss says this person isn’t one. This is your story and your version of Alefgard, after all.

Dragon Quest Builders is now available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

Square Enix Says They Are “Committed” To Bringing More Dragon Quest Titles To The West . October 23, 2016 . 5:30pm

“We’re committed to bringing more Dragon Quest titles in the West as we believe it truly has potential to succeed even better,” Square Enix’s Noriyoshi Fujimoto said in a recent interview.

dragon_quest1_thumb.jpg

With the release of Dragon Quest Builders as well as the remake of Dragon Quest VII in North America and Europe,

it’s certainly been a good time to be a Dragon Quest fan.

However, it’s possible we could be looking forward to seeing more Dragon Quest titles make their way overseas to the west.

In a recent interview with MCV, Square Enix’s Noriyoshi Fujimoto discussed the impact Dragon Quest Builders has had in Japan since releasing nearly nine months ago, why they chose that particular direction for the game, and why he thinks it’s a great title for someone unfamiliar with Dragon Quest to get introduced to the series’ universe. In addition, he noted that the company is “committed” to bringing more Dragon Quest games overseas.

First, when asked why they picked such a new and different direction to take the series with the creation of Dragon Quest Builders, Fujimoto said the following:
‘Accessibility’ in one of the most important factors in what makes Dragon Quest games so unique. If it can’t be picked up by anyone to play then it’s not Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest first brought RPGs to console gaming for wider access of the genre to the masses when it was predominantly PC based at the time.
This time with Dragon Quest Builders we wanted to retain the RPG side but bring in a new element of building and creating anything one wishes in a sandbox environment. For those who found existing block sandbox games too abrupt and without purpose after a few minutes, they may actually still like the gameplay if there was a story to follow and quests to achieve. On the other hand, if you are already into this genre then Dragon Quest Builders is a great way of getting to know the Dragon Quest universe while savouring the genre you enjoy.

Next, Fujimoto had this to say when asked how Builders has performed in Japan thus far:
Superb. We reached over half a million sales in Japan alone within days of launch, consolidating Dragon Quest Builders as a title in its own right in the market. This game is also all about user generated content – so many people are still posting all sorts of creations and their own stories with the game, generating a cascade effect of player base increase. We’ve been told by many people that they’ve discovered the joy of creating through Dragon Quest Builders, and essentially that’s exactly what we wanted the title to serve in Japan. We’re really pleased!

Finally, Fujimoto had the following to say after being asked how he thinks Dragon Quest Builders will affect the series’ Western performance as a whole:
2016 marks the 30th anniversary of Dragon Quest series. It’s not as well known in the West as we would like but it really plays an epoch making role in the console gaming history. If gamers were to ‘discover’ Dragon Quest now, they may be surprised to the sheer breadth of the universe, in terms of variety and depth. But they would also have instant access to something that has taken us 30 years to build. Dragon Quest Builders is definitely a great way of getting the feel of Dragon Quest while having great fun right from the start.
We’re committed to bringing more Dragon Quest titles in the West as we believe it truly has potential to succeed even better. So watch this space.

Additional playable characters, side quests, and more.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will launch for 3DS in North America and Europe on January 20, Nintendo announced.

The 3DS version of the RPG, originally launched for PS2, features two new playable characters, additional side quests, and more.

Here is Nintendo of America’s description of the game:
The story begins when a jester, Dhoulmagus, comes to Castle Trodain and steals the King’s sceptre. He then uses its power to turn his majesty into a troll, the Princess into a horse and the castle inhabitants into plants. The only one left unscathed from this attack is a castle guard who escaped the curse and must now step up to save the kingdom he’s sworn to protect. Only by traveling the lands, recruiting allies and following the trail of destruction that Dhoulmagus leaves in his wake will The Hero be able to retrieve the sceptre in order to restore Trodain back to its former glory.

As players dive into the rich story of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, whether they’re visiting for the first time or coming back to relive the adventure all over again, they can enjoy full voice acting in all plot-important cutscenes, and new story content that will provide more back story about The Hero and the villainous Dhoulmagus. Further additions include additional quests to complete and dungeons to explore, and even a new alternative ending.
Returning heroes may also find that elements of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King have been streamlined for this hand-held outing. The new Quick-Save function allows players to save and exit the game at any time. And for warriors in a hurry, battling foes is also much faster with the introduction of the “Speed Up” feature, allowing heroes to cut their way through each encounter with much greater haste.

Those who wish to capture mementos of their quest to restore peace to the land will now find it’s easier than ever before, as at any time outside of battles and cutscenes players can pause the action and take a photo of their adventure thus far. These photos can be customized in a variety of different ways, including allowing The Hero and his companions to perform special poses, adding stickers and filters, or putting a frame around the image to add a personal touch to their memory. Once the player meets Cameron Obscura in Port Prospect they’ll also be able to unlock Cameron’s Codex, where they’ll be rewarded for taking pictures of certain subjects, monsters and situations.
All of these images can be saved to the SD card and shared to other Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King owners via the StreetPass feature. Once these photos have been shared, other players can give them a thumbs up, and the more of these the image earns, the higher the chance of receiving a new item.

We'll find when they say the true spec's in january I guess. I spoke with Sal the reporter from Gematsu and he told that they(the dragon quest makers) didn't mention much on the switch cause they were told hold off mention anything til January 12 on it . supposedly. so we'll find if it's coming to that console still and if it'll as good as the ps4 or just close enough to it.

we'll just have wait and see.

Nintendo officially confirms Dragon Quest XI for Switch

But will it be the Unreal Engine 4 version? Or the 3DS version?

DQXI-Switch-Ninty-Official.jpg

Nintendo made first official mention of a Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time in a blog post on its official Japanese website today.

Before today, we’ve only heard about that a Switch version was “in consideration,” followed by Dragon Quest series creator mentioning a Switch version also coming in a magazine interview.

In an article sharing the new footage debuted at Jump Festa 2017 this weekend, the end of the post mentions, “It should be noted that this title is also planned for release on Nintendo Switch.”

We’re just sharing this in case any potential Switch owners were concerned after the game was dated for a 2017 release in Japan on PlayStation 4 and 3DS this weekend, where Switch was not mentioned. In fact, Square Enix also put out an official press release today, which also doesn’t mention Switch.

As far as the Switch version goes, we’re still unaware of whether it will use the PlayStation 4 version’s Unreal Engine 4 visuals, the 3DS versions 2D / 3D visuals, or if it will have its own gimmick.

We’ll also get to take photos of our adventures and take on a brand new dungeon that was made for the new version.

From the latest issue of Weekly Jump.

The latest issue of Weekly Jump has a two-page feature on Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time.

Most of the information in the magazine are details we already heard at Jump Festa 2017, but here are the new bits:

 • The protagonist has a strangely shaped birthmark on his left hand. Something happens when it glows.
 • Emma (first page, bottom left) is a close friend of the protagonist who says she’ll undergo the ritual to climb “God’s Rock” with him. The magazine asks, “What is it that they see there?”
 • The Great Tree of Life (second page, top left) floats in the center of the world. It is said the hero can commune with the soul of the Great Tree.
 • The magazine has a number of PlayStation 4 vs. 3DS comparison screenshots, including of the protagonist’s home village of Ishi in the middle of the second page. It’s a small and quiet village located in the valley.
 • There’s a look at the battle system on the lower right of the second page. The PlayStation 4 version sees both the party and the series’ familiar monsters fully realized. The 3DS version shows both the party and monsters in 3D mode, and just the monsters in 2D mode.
If you missed it, catch the latest information, opening movie, Camus character introduction, and PlayStation 4 and 3DS gameplay videos here.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time is due out for PlayStation 4 and 3DS in 2017. A Switch version is also in development, though a release window and graphical style have not been announced.
Thanks, @YonkouProd (2).

A Peek At Dragon Quest VIII’s New Party Members. December 22, 2016 . 6:00pm

Dragon Quest VIII for Nintendo 3DS adds two new playable characters. Red, a fan wielder, has a passive ability that boosts the amount of gold you earn from battles.3 comments Read >

Dragon Quest VIII for Nintendo 3DS adds two new playable characters. Red, a fan wielder, has a passive ability that boosts the amount of gold you earn from battles. You can use the extra money to buy better gear or toss coins at enemies using Dosh Toss. She also gets Dance of Life, a reliable resurrect spell, before you can learn Kazing.

Morrie, the hot-blooded Monster Arena owner, can join your party and one of his unique abilities is Intesso. This ability can increase an ally’s tension one or two levels. Combine this with the Timbrel of Tension you can jump up to three tension levels in one round. Monster Mia calls a group of monsters to help you in battle like a group of slimes that can heal, a pack of Sabercat cubs or Mazin, the Rank A golem from the Monster Arena. Morrie can deal a lot of damage using claws and abilities like Hand of God, an attack that ignores defense, but he’s kind of like a glass cannon since he can’t take that much damage. Speaking of the Monster Arena, Dragon Quest VIII has new X-rank battles including a fight with Bangers and Mash. Square Enix also added photo quests, new dungeon gimmicks, two new dungeons, and this version does not have random monster encounters. Similar to Dragon Quest IX, monsters appear on the field and if you touch a monster a battle begins. Additional story scenes elaborate the hero and Dhoulmagus’ backstories.

Siliconera confirmed with Nintendo that the music recorded by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra will not be in the Western release. Square Enix recorded additional voice acting for new story scenes and the English version has a different voice actress for Jessica. The voice actress who played the magician in Dragon Quest Heroes reprises her role for the 3DS version. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King comes out on January 20 in North America.
