Square Enix The Official Dragon Quest Thread

This is honestly...my game of the year...I'm being serious lol.

playing it on PS4 Pro and I double dipped on the Switch version.

Finally got round to completing DQ XI. I had a lot of fun, but I think act 3 could have been structured better. Felt like the story was winding down a bit and there was less need to revisit story areas. Plus a lot of the high end gear felt like it was hated off until you didn't really need it. Still a lot of fun and a great DQ game.

Nintendo Switch owners had to wait for quite a long time in order to play Square Enix's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Thankfully, the game was finally released a couple of weeks ago; bringing with it a bunch of features that no other version has.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition is not only a mouthful, but it is also the complete version of the original game, with added voice acting in both English and Japanese, new quests for players to tackle, and a phenomenal orchestrated soundtrack by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Now that the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI has been out for a few weeks, the game gets an accolades trailer that show off the positive reception this latest entry in the long-running Dragon Quest series has had; proving that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition is more than just a simple port.

It is also worth reminding players that the game's demo for Dragon Quest XI on the Nintendo Switch is currently available on the eShop — for those players who are still on the fence about purchasing it — and it's quite a lengthy one; offering players a whopping 10 hours of gameplay.

Check it out:

Square Enix's Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition was released on the Nintendo Switch just a couple of weeks ago; after quite a long time, since the game was announced for the console before Nintendo even revealed what the Switch was.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition is, as the name very appropriately describes it, the definitive edition of Dragon Quest XI; featuring content that isn't present in other versions of the game, such as a fully orchestrated soundtrack and both Japanese and English dubs.

The graphics on the Nintendo Switch version of the game may look slightly downgraded, but all of the other features truly make it the definitive edition. Perhaps the feature that most seasoned players will appreciate is the fact that this version also allows them to play the full game in 16-Bit graphics.

Today, Nintendo has released an overview trailer for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch, which tells us everything we need to know about this version. In case this trailer doesn't convince you, the game's 10-hour-long demo is also available on the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Square Enix's long-awaited Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition was finally released on the Nintendo Switch about a month ago; after being one of the first titles to have been officially confirmed for the handheld hybrid console before Nintendo even revealed what the hardware was.

The Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is not just a mindless port, however, as the game features content that is not present in other versions of the game; starting with the orchestrated soundtrack, Japanese voice-over, and a 16-bit version of the full game.

With all that said, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition is still the port of a game that was released 2 years ago on platforms way more powerful than the Nintendo Switch; meaning that some graphical downgrades were to be expected.

Digital Foundry have recently released a thorough analysis that compares the PlayStation 4 and PC versions of the game with the recently released Nintendo Switch edition, and the results are surprisingly favourable in terms of performance.

Other than the game's graphics, all versions of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age are locked at 30 frames per second, and the Nintendo Switch actually manages to keep a rather solid frame rate throughout — albeit with some minor dips during fights. Don't take my word for it, though ,and be sure to check out Digital Foundry's full analysis down below.

Take a look:

Wow, that HQ version of DQ3 looks awesome! Are there any plans to give DQ4 the same treatment? I’ve been playing the DQ4 mobile game, which is somewhat modernized but not to the level of that DQ3 game.

They'll probably do I & II next in this engine that looks like an improved version of the Octopath Traveller game engine.

Dragon Quest Creator Teases Possible HD-2D Remakes Of The First Two Games

It's just "not official yet"

Dragon Quest I and II and III are a connected trilogy. DQ III is the prequel chronologically.

I am never a huge fan when a company promotes some product as "darker and edgier". Its seldom a good thing.

That said, the Dragon Quest 3 remake is entirely up my alley. More HD-2D please!

I hope they don’t get rid of turn based combat but clearly they could make improvements and additions to it such as showing upcoming turn order like Final Fantasy X, adding a grid based system where character positioning is important like Wild Arms 4 and 5, Radiant Historia, or the Lunar games, and so on. They haven’t improved the turn based system much since the beginning but have threatened in the past to go action only instead. I don’t want to just play as one character in an action game here, I want to play as all four and I want more strategy time not less.

Yeah. That's what irks me about recent FF games. 15 was a mess and showed they're not good at action rpg's imo. So I was pretty disappointed at 16 revealing itself as much the same.

Yeah that makes sense to do 3 first since it takes place before the first two. I never played any of the games after 4, but that one is my all-time favorite 8-bit Ninetendo game. The remake they did that’s available on mobile devices is solid but they somehow manage to give the monsters even DUMBER names than the original had (and this is a game that had villains named Balzac and Bullwong lol).

I think Square-Enix has somehow gotten it into their head that "action RPG" is the magic key for them dominating the industry with their games. "Skyrim sold more than any of our games ever, Skyrim is an action RPG, so if we made an action RPG it would sell to everyone ever, profit!" Or something like that. One half "make it more like an action game to draw in the non-RPG fans", one half "real time is more cinematic and we want cinematic-ness".

And of course they ignore that Final Fantasy *already sells ridiculously well*. FF15 sold about 9 million copies. Its already a 100% mainstream top tier franchise. Its sales don't need improvement, and there is no realistic way to improve them beyond their current level. The problem is not sales, the problem is their release schedule and budget. They need to *not* take a decade plus to make a game, and *not* need to restart development from scratch multiple times during that decade.

As an aside, I would not be shocked in the slightest if Octopath Traveler made them more profit than Final Fantasy 15. Yes, OT "only" sold 2+ million copies compared to 9M. . . but FF15 also took way longer to make, and almost certainly had a vastly higher budget.

Also, Square-Enix is a strong enough studio, even after all these years of decay, to take an entirely new IP and sell 2M copies of it. That is not nothing!

It was one of the best in the series, if not the best one I've played and I've played through them all except 10. Even before this new 'upgraded edition on Switch' business, the one on PS4 was full of content. The only things I have to ding it for was the difficulty being too easy on default and the music, not only the sound quality but the new compositions weren't as good. It's time for Sugiyama to hang it up and let someone like the Ni No Kuni & Studio Ghibli composer Joe Hisaishi take over.

Dragon Quest series composer Koichi Sugiyama dies at age 90 - Gematsu

He had a lot of awful ***hole opinions that he supported as causes but was talented as a composer (also did the music for E.V.O. on the SNES among others) though DQ11 was one of his weaker contributions filled with recycling. It’s unfortunate that his music that brought so many people joy was tied to his activism that brought pain.
