The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 5

OK, fine. Sinestro was still the only one there.

Well, not really. They showed two scenes where -- supposedly -- all 3600 GLs are at the Central Battery. Two pow-wows with Sinestro. I took it that all the other GLs were just hanging around Oa waiting for an answer.

I did not. I said that he asked for permission to return to Earth, not that he journeyed there for that express purpose.

The guardians refused to send other Lanterns to Earth to help Hal fight Parallax, stating that they were willing to let Sinestro use the yelow ring instead. They then agreed to let Hal fight Parallax alone instead of letting Sinestro use the yellow ring.

Why are they more comfortable with Hal fighting Parallax alone than multiple Lanterns fighting Parallax? If Sinestro is instructed not to use the yellow ring, it's not as though the guardians have a better backup plan.
They dont have Hal`s will to defeat Parallax. Like any other hero story.

AND, like i said, Hal himself told the Guardians that only his life needed to be sacrificed and no more GL needed to die.

Still. He didn't ask for permission to go home. He asked them to let him prove that Willpower was strong enough.

The power of the ring is based on Will. I interpreted the Guardians agreeing with him as them placing their faith in just how much he wanted to save Earth. Their gamble payed off.

Oh ... I remember one poorly transitioned scene that I wanted to ask about.

What the f- happened after Hal blasted Hector across the room after they were lying on the floor? Hector just starts screaming and then he's gone. Hal lets out a sigh of relief and then they cut to him at his desk talking to his roomate. LOL.

They obviously didnt have the money to make all 2600 Lanterns fight Parallax on Earth like every impatient fan wanted to see.

I blame this on expectations and not in the movie itself.

Here are two plot holes I'd like answers to:

Why when Hal quit the Corps was he able to keep his ring? He quit, abandoned the Corps. In the comics the Guardians never let someone so defiant keep their ring.

Why does Hal ask for help to defend his planet? I mean, he's on Earth... goes to Oa.. then back to Earth when he should have just stayed there to protect it. It's like a cop driving all the way to central precinct to ask permission to stop a domestic disturbance

I elaborated a few posts down that I meant at the Citadel where there was only Hal, Sinestro, and the Guardians.

I blame piss poor writing. To each his own

It was explained that Hal himself told the Guardians to make the GL step aside and let him try to fight parallax himself. It is about Will.

Hal was humble, accepted the GL responsibility and all the sacrifices it comes with it, and in the end, gained the respect from the Guardians, Sinestro and all the corps.

Uhhh didn't we get a shot of him asking them to help him save his world?

Dude, Oa is like a police station. They dont live there. They live in their respective sectors. It was clearly shown in the movie.
At what point in the movie did we see The Lanterns in their individual sectors?

Then your blame is in the wrong place. They did not do any kind of job explaining why other Lanterns weren't there, which is a mistake given the importance and strength we're led to believe they possess.

They accepted this at face value? Didn't he ask them for help one minute prior, implying that he was in no way powerful enough to defeat Parallax?

That was kind of a weird transition, i`d give you that. I interpreted as Hal failed, Hector escaped.

We don't. They merely "say" it in the movie, much like they say a lot of trivial things without demonstrating anything. So now a few posters want us to believe that all those other Lanterns are too busy doing something instead of ganging up on Parallax who's going to try to destroy the main Lantern hub.

They never showed the Lanterns in their sectors. My nephew even asked me at the end of the film if they all lived next to GL symbol

BTW Hal's supposed "Will Power" was so poorly shown in this movie ... actually it was mostly Carol telling him he had it.

To each they denied but then Hal, in a very famous Hal move from the comics, lecture the guardians and disagrees with them, explaining Earth is worth saving.

LOL I picture everyone of those aliens pitching a tent every night.

Another case of telling (or having told to him) and not showing he has willpower. I saw him as a coward who's not too bright. A five minute fight scene at the end didn't change that.

Also, why did they change how Martin Jordan died? What what the point of that?

You know what .... the more I think about it, the more I do feel as though if you're going to take on this whole "Will vs. Fear" element, you better do it just like Star Wars did with "the force" ..... you cannot ram that home like a horny high school kid having sex for the first time. It should ideally take multiple movies to really emphasize the theme.

I guess it's kinda like going to war. 1 female for every 150 males. Whole lotta tent pitching going on
