The Official Hawkman Thread

Earlier this year, I went back and dug up some issues from Geoff Johns's run on Hawkman, just out of curiosity. I had never bought any Hawkman stuff before. I saw some back issues on the stands one day when I happened to stop by a local shop, and after I read a few, I kept going back to get more. Great stories, and some great artwork, as well.

I don't know, even when he was brought back and became a major part of the JSA again, back when I was enjoying JSA a lot, I could never get into Hawkman. He always seemed like an overly gruff, authoritarian jerk.

I like Hawkman, mainly because of his unique profession and his "past lives" aspect. You can make him as deep or as shallow as you want. You can have this tragic love story, and all these things, or just go all-out action, starting with some kind of archaeological discovery. And since the source of his power is vague, you can limit his ability to the extent that serves the story best, without contradicting anything. I like the whole "Eternal Warrior" theme, where you have a character recalling adventures in a previous time...it just never gets old.

Hawkman is one of the few DCU "big guns" who doesn't hesitate taking someone's head off and that alone makes him awesome.

Have you read the Wings of Fury trade?it covers this a great deal in that 3rd volume.

"He kills people" doesn't rank very high on my list of what makes characters good, unfortunately.

And that is a good reason to read Johns Hawkman. He fleshes out the character and shows why he became this overbearing, tough guy in volume three when he fights the Head Hunter. The brief appearances of him in JSA don't do the character the justice he deserves. The guy taught as a fill in professor at Ivy Town college. He's practically Indiana Jones, is a curator at a museum full of his previous life items, and he has an interesting side having many different lives because he has been reincarnated tons of times. Johns run covers all of this and is the reason I like Hawkman. I also like the idea of Hawkman trying to gather his previous lives' items. I would definitely give it a chance before knocking it.

As to what they are doing with Hawkman now besides minor guest appearances in JSA, he might as well be a dead character. I think the way he's being handled lately hasn't been that good at all. I can see they may somehow bring Kendra back to Carter in JLA because of her dream of making love to Carter in the sky, seen in the most recent issue of JLA. We'll see what happens.

I find it to be a fairly neutral quality in that regard, myself. There are good characters with high body counts and there are bad characters who are boyscouts. The reverse is also true.

Wow, he changed his style a lot. What the f*** is Aquaman doing riding a dinosaur, though? And those gloves... why, gloves? Why? :csad:

It looks to me like he's riding on his seahorse, which is wrestling with the T-Rex. What's wrong with the gloves?

You're right, he is on his seahorse. Which is somehow even more ******ed.

Nothing's wrong with the gloves, I guess, except they look like dishwashing gloves and I really hate them.

Don't get me wrong, Baker rendered it well. The scene itself is just really stupid and does nothing to get Aquaman past his pathetically stupid Silver Age/Super Friends portrayal that everyone is hung up on. :o
