The Official Hype Martial Arts Thread

Always mad respect for Judokas.

They have to get on the matt all the time and make the technique work against an opponent trying to stop them.
I’ve tried judo and unlike all other martial arts felt absolutely incompetent when sparring with the regulars. Although I guess sparring in many of the other arts was against other people of similar experience. Like it felt absolutely pointless trying to even throw any of them once. All the mid-level experience people were too good.

Judo and BJJ are two approaches where the "low ranked" students are probably way more capable than the students in another system/style at a similar level of training.

It's just the nature of the beast given all the matt time in each art.

Nice breakdown of what I would say is a preemtive action to stop a possible blade attack.

Expectations vs Reality:

This is footage of Guro Max Pallens at the Dog Brothers' Gathering Of The Pack from, if my memory serves me back in 2000/2001ish.

I should probably have a better recall of the date since... I was there.

The Dog Brothers held a "camp" three days prior to the fights. It covered a lot of ground but was a lot of fun. I have already regailed ya'll with my tale of Dr. Gyi's yoga. Now for Guro Max...

Guro Paellens is from the Senkotiros school of Filipino Martial Arts. Guro Max showed up and Crafty Dog gave him the spotlight and what he did was compliment us on how fast and hard we were swinging our sticks in training but he was not seeing the use of the checks parries and off hand techniques. At the time... I scoffed. "That sort of thing is fine in training but against a non compliant opponent it just won't work." I don't think I was alone.

Guro Max came back for the fights on the fourth day and at 52 years old or so at the time he got in there and mixed it up with someone he must have had 25-30 years on, I believe it was the Swiss based Lonely Dog. Regardless of who he faced he in my opinion put the techniques he highlighted on display. Yes, it might not seem as impressiv as I am intimating but if you take into account that if Guro Max had a machete or blade that the fight wouldn't in a real world situation probably even get to the clinch.

PS I'm the guy at the 5:22 mark sitting with a red T-Shirt by the red matting set up as a makeshift barrier.

I've never trained them but I am fascinated by the growing number of groups and individuals that are keeping alive or trying to recreate/functionalize from old manuals the martial arts native to Europe. The primacy of firearms and modern warfare techniques doused the fire of Euro based martial systems for lifetime study for sure so anyone keeping these martial traditions alive gets a lot of respect.

Plus... A kick is a kick and a punch is a punch, a throw is a throw. There is no cultural monopoly on armed or unarmed fighting. Those who study Asian methods of fighting should give the European arts their day in court and try to understand both what they share in common and what is distinct about the various schools from both East and West.

This guy is legit funny. Anyone who has some idea about the martial arts scene will find this hilariously rings true. Really well written comedy.

A fave tribute of mine to "old school" female martial arts movie performers:

Here is an official release of a much older video from PFS founder and JKD Concepts/Filipino Martial Arts instructor Paul Vunak.

Paul is truly gifted as both a fighter and as a teacher and his insights into streetfighting were invaluable enough that the East Coast detachement of Navy Seals went to him to come up with their hand to hand combat curriculum. Having met him a few times... He's the real deal in terms of martial arts. If one wanted to get into JKD Concepts and FMA you can't go wrong with Vunak's material.

This Youtuber has a nice interesting blend of traditional bushcraft and martial arts. Quite informative.

A great and very "normal" tool for self defense is the hand held flash light.

Beautiful but deadly. Hard to train but reliant on body position and footwork more than raw strength, the various Silats of Southeast Asia are relatively new to the West and America in particular. Connected to my own beloved Filipino Martial Arts the various systems/styles of Silat include a lot of weapons work as well as brutal close quarters techniques and some are even quite adept at ground fighting.

I myself have never trained in any of the Japanese or Okinawan Te's. But I find I learn a lot just going through the history of how Karate as we know it was developed and eventually exported around the world. These days there's a lot of online material covering this subject and busting many widely held mythic assumptions about Karate, in my opinion.

Used in a few styles of Kung-Fu but most associated with Wing Chun, the Mook Jong or wooden dummy is a practice tool used for working flow and combinations along with body position and foot work for close in fighting. When someone is adept at using it it can be quite the spectacle.

Temura Morrison gave us all a peak at the weapons work and marital arts of the Maori in an episode of The Mandalorian. As in all cultures the natives of the Pacific islands developed their own styles of fighting with many still trying to keep the flame of their particular culture's pre-firearms combative ways alive.

Martial arts is filled with many types of hand held weapons, some of which are obvious in form and application. There are so many other strange and exotic weapons used in fascinating ways. A short selection of some of these weapons from all over the world:

I’ve been bingeing Cobra Kai and will be finished in a couple of hours. That is also getting me right back into it lol.
