Writer Jeff Bond interviewed Iron Man director John Favreau for the cover story of Geek Monthly’s April issue, out now. It’s a great article, with Favreau talking in-depth about his evolution from indie moviemaker and actor to big-time Hollywood genre director.
Favreau also talked to Bond about his early career ambitions (he always wanted to make big movies), Iron Man’s special effects (practical shooting and real suits + some ILM magic = awesomeness), the status of the John Carter of Mars movie (it’s Pixar’s baby now) and who he thinks is the next Spielberg (It’s JJ Abrams).
Click through for some high-res pics from the article, including a few from the Iron Man set, and some good quotage. Remember to pick up or order the new issue of Geek. It features some great content including a profile of Be Your Own Pet and a Sundance movie wrap-up.
Favreau on the special effects of Iron Man:
“… The trick with a movie like this is you have Stan Winston build the real suits and you have ILM there. And you use the practical suits to keep the CGI honest and you use the CGI to keep the practical suits honest. You make sure the practical suits move as much as they can and you make the CGI match the on-set photography of the practical suits … “
Favreau on his indie to superhero movie predecessors:
“The people who have broken ground for me are the people who came out of independent films and have now broken into big budget movies … Brian Singer … Chris Nolan … Peter Jackson — all these people who came out of independent films now working with money and special effects.
