You're wrong. Leno and Conan are always leading in the ratings for their timeslots. Leno wanted to announce it now so Conan knows he's not going to get screwed over by NBC in a behind the scenes fiasco.

Or that NBC loses Conan to another network. Kilborn leaving probably jump started this whole thing. Yes times change and in 2009 more material could be acceptable. Bill Maher said on Conan he was the first to say "sucks" on TV. "This weather sucks." He was on the Tonight Show performing standup used it, producers went beserk, nothing happened, Carson used it a few days later.

But I don't see Conan introducing a new series of stamps and having a dog named Prison Rape being mentioned.

Wiseman, in the 18-49 ratings, I think Leno is slipping. I can't find any ratings info on the Net. However, placing faith in Conan being around in 5 years is kinda funny. NBC better have protection around him 24/7 so he doesn't slip on soap in the shower, or have a severe car accident.

Actually it's fairly normal in the industry to plan stuff out that far in advance to keep an asset. It's just usually not done so publicly. 5 years really isn't that long for someone who has been loyal to NBC for so long. NBC is making sure they don't have another Carson/Leno/Letterman situation.
