Please support the Storm ongoing and the Elektra ongoing!

For Guardians of the Galaxy it really depends on how far back you want to go. The current group (movie group) really started in the event Annihilation Conquest and then continued into their series by Abnett and Lanning and concluding in the Thanos Imperative event. Then not that long ago the book was relaunched under Bendis with the current series (after having them show up in the first arc of Avengers Assemble). If you want to go back to the beginning with Annihilation Conquest... I'd recommend that. If you don't want to go back that far then I'd suggest starting with Bendis' run. If you want to go back even further prior to when they were a team, most of them showed up in Annihilation (note: separate event from Annihilation Conquest).

Spider-Man... I don't know. I've not read it since One More Day, but I know the title just recently relaunched. I think it's only a few issues in, so you might want to start there. If you want to go back further, I'd recommend starting with Dan Slott's 'Big Time' start, which was around Amazing Spider-Man 648 or something like that.

That's all I can help you with. I have no clue on the others. I think there's been a bunch of different White Tigers, but the most recent one (the teenage girl) started in Avengers Academy sometime. Maybe around issue 13 or 14... something like that.

Ignore Bendis' run; the movie is based on Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's series, which spun directly out of Keith Giffen's Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord mini-series. The earliest you really need to go to get the movie-specific Guardians is Annihilation, since Star-Lord himself had a small role in that event (although he's decidedly different from anything you might recognize).

If you want specifically something you'll recognize from the movie, as opposed to reading the foundations upon which the movie was based, that's where Bendis' run comes in. He basically seems to be using the movie as a basis, then evolving his own story from there.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get my buddy into comics and he finally seems up to it. Since the success of the Marvel Studios movies, he's gained a pretty good interest in Iron Man. I'm a bit more of a DC guy, so I'm hoping that someone here can help with a recommendation.

From what he told me, he's looking for a more recent origin. I originally recommended the Ultimate origin (because that's the only one that I'm aware of), but after looking it up, he didn't seem to interested. Any advice?

Thanks!

Extremis by Warren Ellis would probably be a good place to start for him.

I'd also highly recommend the Knauffs run on Iron Man during Civil War.

From there you could go to the Fraction run, but I thought it was pretty meh. Some people
liked it.

I've found that it doesn't really matter where you start honestly.

But don't ever recommend Ultimate anything.

I enjoyed Ultimates 1 and 2. I won't argue the problems people have with them, I get it. I still liked them though.

Okay, thanks! He was pretty adamant about wanting an origin to start with, which was the reason that the Ultimate line came to mind - although I haven't ever read it. Civil War was what I had initially suggested since he has a grasp of the origin from the movie anyway. I'm trying to beat it into his head that he needs to learn more about the Mandarin, heh.

I read some Ultimate Spider-man a few years back and really enjoyed it. There were some changes from what I was used to, but I enjoyed that aspect.

The lack of people reading Avengers World around here is surprising. I haven't enjoyed an Avengers book this much since Slott's Mighty Avengers. I'm a sucker for Nick Spencer and the roster is pretty much everybody I care about.:up:

I read Avengers World but I'm a little behind. That's what happens when Marvel floods the franchise with 30 books.

Is the new Fantastic Four series any good? How about the Elektra series?

Let us know what you think when you read them! :)

Captain Marvel was OK. The first TPB did not grab me all that much. As for Fraction's Hawkeye, it was better, but nothing that made me want to buy the 2nd TPB. Perhaps I am not giving them enough of a try, though. Bought the Annihilation Omnibus and read that again...along with Planet Hulk...guess I just like those too much.

So, I just ordered Supreme Power volume 1. Good decision?

Yeah, just don't expect it to end well(or at all really) and feel free to drop it before the Ultimate universe crosses over with SP.

love FF, alot of people seem to like the new elektra book, but i really can not get into the art. its a cool for covers, but reading an ongoing in that style is near impossible for me.

not to mention all the tie ins. and with this fall and winter having like 3 major events at once, is giving me a headache thinking about it all.

i just dont understand the need to make everything tie into everything. it frustrates me more than anything else

I love comics but I have never delved into the Cosmic stuff much. I just bought Infinity Gauntlet. Is that a good launching point in general to get into cosmic awesomeness of Marvel?

I just finished reading Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest both which I really liked. I also got into the Nova series (with Richard Rider) and the D'n'A run of Guardians which I also absolutely freaking loved. I started reading the Bendis Guardians but....it's missing something and it's not as fun as the D'n'A run. I just got the part where the team runs into Angela, which at this point is the only thing holding my interest for the series.

If I were to start with the Guardians I would start with the D'n'A run. I found it more fun, the dialogue, the core team and guests are also more interesting in my opinion. I really loved Bug and Mantis.

I'm thinking of picking up the upcoming Angela: Asgardian Assassin series. I do have a question: The Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm features Angela but is it any good? Am I going to miss much if I start reading from there seeing that I have no interest to the whole Original Sin saga.

Also, how's the new Spidey 2099 and Spider-verse coming along? I absolutely loved the original Spider Man 2099 series and I'm pretty much a Spidey fan (until the Back in Black storyline). The idea of all those spidey coming together is appealing but then again so was the idea of Spider Island and I dropped pretty quickly.

Thor and Loki: 10th Realm is essentially Angela's origin. It's entertaining. Thor and Loki (nuLoki) are partnered up and I hope to see more of that now that nuLoki is heroic.

Eh, IG features lots of characters that you may or may not be familiar with. I think the Galactus Trilogy is a great way to start with the Marvel Cosmic, though IG is also good.

Both are some of Marvel's best right now. Highly recommend. Plus there's only been 7 issues for both I think right now, plenty of time to catch up.
