The Official PS4 Thread

Yeah I read that earlier. Quite a few guys were saying the same thing about PS Now being a major obstacle. I think the relevance of BC is higher this gen (particularly with X1, as opposed to the 360 with original Xbox BC and a much smaller back catalogue) because last gen had so many classics and many people have a huge backlog. PS Now was a good idea but it loses some of its benefits when the other guys start offering actual BC. I think Sony should at least consider BC for PS5 as they will have 4 consecutive successful consoles and generations of games to call upon and just that feature would make the PS5 a low risk no brainer even if it didn't otherwise deliver. Would be great for gamers if the big 3 had BC for all prior generations with every new console and I think many hardcore gamers would own all 3 and replace everything else they had each new generation. Anyway I'm rambling again lol.

I honestly don't think BC is a huge factor outside the enthusiast community.

I actually think BC would have been a bigger deal if either console ( or both ) offered it at the outset at launch.

if the X1 was BC, while the PS4 wasn't, that could have made a bigger difference in the initial sales.

360 owners would have been more likely to switch to the X1 right away, knowing that their library of 360 games would still be playable.

and people on the fence between the 2 systems might have gone for the X1 instead knowing that they could supplement the new X1 games with all the (cheaper) 360 games available.

we'll have to see how much of a boost BC gives to X1 sales.

if it does and it's a hit with consumers, you can bet Sony will start reconsidering their stance on no BC.

Well, we can't see, since that scenario didn't happen, but I don't think it would've mattered much in the end.

oh, I thought you were talking about sales going forward.

but yeah, we'll never know how that scenario would have played out.

I just think that BC would have made a bigger impact back then at launch than it will now.

I don't think it's going to have a huge affect on sales, either, though, but yeah, I was talking about it mattering all that much at launch

and I'm sure in the next year or so, the PS3 will start dropping in price even more.

so, if you didn't keep your PS3, you can always buy another one to play those PS3 games again.

FINALLY!

http://www.amazon.com/PDP-Universal-Media-Remote-PlayStation-4/dp/B00ZJRHSZO

just give me a media remote like PS3 for PS4 and I am (almost) a happy camper :D

ask and you shall recieve

that could very well be a placeholder date as the 31st is a Saturday.i think the important takeaway is that it exists and we will soon have an official remote

It says Official Licensed Product right there in the picture.

Oh, I am misusing that term. I should have said proprietary.

Guess Sony has no interest in making their own.

X1 owners get BC!!

PS4 owners get a Media App and a Remote!!

WooHoo!!!

:woo::chd:

October! October! Why not June?! :argh:

Oh well. October is better than never. Pre-order placed.

*waits patiently at the door*

You and I both. I pre-ordered as well. Hope it's sooner though. But I guess I can wait for October. It's about time.

Amazon has the release date set for October 31 which is a Saturday so I doubt that is the official release date.

when I first heard about that remote shortly after buying my PS4 in fall of last year they said late 2014 or first quarter of 2015. my only complaint on the remote and this is a MINOR one is the lack of frame by frame buttons that the PS3 remote and most DVD ones. but to be fair most new blu ray player remotes have removed it so it is only natural that this one does not have them either. Either way I WILL buy this thing when it hits.

Actually most remotes do have frame by frame buttons in a sense. Instead of having separate buttons for that function they have folded it into the rewind and fast forward buttons. If you want to go frame by frame on a movie just pause the movie and tap the fast forward button to go one frame forward and tap the rewind button to go one frame back. Keep tapping it and it will go frame by frame whichever direction you want it to.

If you want the movie to play at a reduced speed pause and hold the fast forward or rewind button and the movie will play at like 1/8th speed. Then you can speed it up to 1/4, 1/2, and regular play by tapping the forward and rewind buttons again.

On the PS4 controller you can do this by pausing the movie and tapping R2 to move forward frame by frame and L2 to move backward frame by frame.

I just realized that the controller doesnt have buttons for L/R 1, 2 and 3. Also doesnt have separate buttons for subtitle, angle and audio. Most movies dont use angle, but the other two get used

Well blu-rays have in-movie menus so you can switch the audio and subtitles by pulling the menu up during the movie.

As for dvds, you can switch the subtitles and audio from the options bar that pops up on the bottom of the screen when you hit the option button on the remote.

It's not ideal and I'd prefer a dedicated audio and subtitle buttons, but it's not a deal breaker. I've been watching blu-rays on my PS4 for a year now and have made do without dedicated audio and subtitle buttons on the PS4 controller so I guess I can do without on the remote.
