with all the talk of PS4.5 and Spencer's comments about upgradeable consoles, do you think both Sony and MS will unveil new console versions this E3?

I'd if it will happen at E3, but it's time for them to announce an upgraded console. PS3 got an upgrade (smaller upgrade than this, but still an upgrade) 3 years after the phat console was released.

yeah. I guess it is about time.

that was just a redesign, not a hardware revision/upgrade.

No. E3 is about the games and VR games will likely be the highlight, not new hardware. When they announce this, it'll most likely be via an article on the PS Blog

I guess we'll find out this year.

that was just a redesign, not a hardware revision/upgrade.

The chipset in the ps3 slim was a revision. The PS3 has had multiple hardware revisions over the years:

To date, the PS3 has had several component revisions which serve to reduce power consumption. This in turn results in production savings, lower heat production, lower cooling requirements and quieter running. Since launch, the Cell processor has shrunk from 90 nm to 45 nm. The RSX GPU has also seen reduction in size over periodic revisions of the PS3.

Major improvements were introduced with the PS3 Slim. It utilized a 45 nm Cell which resulted in a 34% reduction in power consumption over the previous 65 nm Cell model;[4] the latest Slim model further decreases power consumption with the move to a 40 nm RSX.

fair enough but the technical specifications remained identical.

Moreover, the slim playstations are usually released waaaaay later on. That was the case for Ps1/2/P. For Ps3 we saw in its third year probably because it needed some reinvigoration.

Most likely because there was not a competitive market for slim models until late in those models lives. Sony and Microsoft changed that when they released "slim" models of the PS3 and XBox 360. They aren't going to go back to having a single design sustain a gaming generation for 7-8 years. We are coming up on the half way mark of this generation. Both companies are going to be putting out revisions or upgrades sooner rather than later. That's just the nature of the tech market, and it's especially necessary when the current gen was released so underpowered and behind to begin with.

TV and audio and media hardware nanufacturers, online streaming services, cable, satellite, and computer manufacturers and designers are all investing in or toying with 4K and UHD and HDR. I doubt either Sony or Microsoft are going to ignore that momentum. Especially when Sony is one of the inventors and controlling parties of Blu-ray and UHD. Ill be very surprised if they wait 5 more years to release a game console that is 4K capable. But they can't release a PS5 this early. Well, they could, but that wouldn't be the most customer friendly option.

A PS4K is the best strategy at this point. It allows them to improve the current gen hardware, extends the console's life, helps their new UHD brand, and it gives game studios a bit more hardware power to play with. And it doesn't make the current PS4 games obsolete.

Not necessarily. Like I said I think the reason the slim PS3 came out earlier than usual because the system needed some reinvigorating, and it worked.

It won't if you don't have a 4K TV.

exactly, which is why this new model is allegedly coming. Its a new technology that Sony wants to help push forward and the time to do so is now, not later when the ship has sailed

Sony has a stake in 4k so it makes sense for them to push on this front. They are the best manufacturer by a mile when it comes to 4k projectors for example.

I think without VR this might not be happening right now even if they would have otherwise wanted it. It looks like upgrades are needed for VR and that is the push they needed to do it. I'm happy to be proven wrong but I can't imagine VR is at the right level of tech (at these kinds of budgets) where I would be interested in it. Like 3D it seems like something that I'd really get into once the tech gets mature, and 3D was released for TVs and cinema about a decade or 2 too early (which would have been ok if you didn't have to pay a big premium for it).

Well... Now the Wall Street journal is now straight up saying it's going to be a beefier model that old PS4 owners will have to upgrade to if they want the full experience.

Welcome to the era of the 32x all over again. Forget your old ****** hardware guys, please buy the new one..you don't HAVE to but we'll make sure you'll feel miserable if you don't

That being said.. I still expect a marginal bump. Still sticking to my assumption that it's a slim redesign that will replace the current model outright, and may at most absorb the extra VR **** into the console itself. Really cant see them wanting to piss off the user base with something with even twice the processing power of the existing PS4.

well if that's indeed the case, then they better offer a generous upgrade deal for us existing PS4 owners. I'm talking > $200 trade in credit for existing PS4 models.

and it better come with a 1TB hdd. enough of the 500GB model.

I literally just posted that article 2 above yours.

As someone who only bought a PS4 in January, this really does piss me off. It's stuff like this that was the reason I didn't buy a console for 15 years.

So to play certain future games I want to I would need to buy the upgraded model? If so that's a joke.

yeah. I'm not that happy either that I may have to sell/trade in my PS4 already after less than 3 years.

That actually does suck for people who don't want to upgrade. I thought new games were going to work (with different levels of performance) on both versions. It still suits my agenda of consoles getting more powerful more regularly but I'm sorry for everyone who it (unfairly now by the looks of it) affects.

to play future games with the best possible settings you need the upgraded model. just like on PC to play games with the best possible setting, you need the best parts.

if this is true, I'm kind of curious to see how/if MS responds.

will they release a more powerful X1?

if I have to upgrade my PS4, I may just use that opportunity to switch to the X1 instead.

I honestly don't use my PS4 much and I don't really use it outside of gaming.

at least the X1 offers more functionality.
