eh, i don't think vr will crash. when kinect came out for 360, all it did was make the console more successful. and it didn't affect hardcore gamers either.

on a side note, why are the video game forums out of place? i liked it better in the original order.

The whole motion controls movement was a fad though and Kinect did crash. All it did was give MS very short-term success which they weren't able to sustain with the peripheral. Things that sell well can and do crash

They updated the descriptions under the sections to reflect the newest hardware. You probably never noticed, but that was pretty outdated. Like how under the Nintendo they had something about how it was a place to discuss the Wii, DS and 3DS.

As far as the order, though, I really don't know why that got changed.
I did notice that actually, I just didn't noticed till you mentioned it that they got updated it. Do you have the power to put the forums back in their original order?

Kinect on xbone crashed but we can think of a number of reasons as to why that happened. kinect on 360 was a huge success though.

So would we expect nothing official till E3 now on this? Seems like this (along with VR) might have been an important part of the Sony show but the cat's been let out of the bag early.

we might get something beforehand. i remember seeing Ps4 announcements in the late winter in 2013.

Oh right, good. I'd like as much info on this asap!

Sorry to those who this negatively affects. It's the kind of thing I've wanted console-makers to do for a long time but I know it is a big downer for many.

I just don't know why anyone would want it. I don't remember ever thinking during the 7 year PS3/360 cycle that the games looked like crap and I can't wait for next gen. Console gaming has ALWAYS been here's a system that you're going to be able to play EVERY game on.. It's going to make them all the same.. And you dont have to worry about that upgrading ******** like they do on PC.

This just smells like a terrible Sega move or something. I really hope it backfires. I really do.

Also.. Why wouldn't they just wait until more 4K TV'S were in people home? Go balls in with the PS5.. If ANYTHING this tells me that this generation could be just as long if not longer than the PS3/360.

I'd be less annoyed if Sony said something about a trade program.. Maybe GameStop will come out and say "hey.. Give us your PS4 and you'll only have to pay 100 for the 4K.." that wouldn't be bad. I would even probably do that.. But right now it's just them not confirming or denying anything.. Letting leaks happen and seeing how ticked people are getting.

Maybe that's they're intention? Gage how angry their base would be of they do this? I dunno.

Did you ever play on a good gaming pc near the end of last gen mate? I never thought that either until I saw the difference on Battlefield 3. And then I bought my own gaming pc and compared various games on GFWL vs 360 and the difference was crazy on many of them. This was only an issue last gen because it dragged on a little too long but would have become an even bigger issue this gen if it was the same length as last without upgrades, due to the weak technical starting points of both PS4 & XB1 vs middle of the road pcs of the time.

What you said there should make it clear why it's going to be more popular with those with a budget that wouldn't take a big hit. You would be less annoyed at $100 plus trade in. Others would be happy at $250 & no trade-in and yet others are already happy to pre-order at full price. Most gamers would choose the better tech if the sacrifice to get it wasn't significant to them (just happens that this cost and timing will be significant to many). Shouldn't be that hard to understand why it's popular with the bleeding edge group even though I can totally see your point and why it will negatively affect many gamers who are nowhere near ready to pay for an upgrade (especially those who only just bought a PS4).

maybe they are trying to test reactions........lol.

and I'd imagine retailers like Gamestop and Best Buy will offer some kind of trade in incentive. Like, we'll give you $200 for your old PS4 + a $50 bonus towards the new PS4.

and I agree with you about how this might not be the best move on Sony's part.

I think that Sony and MS should have designed the PS4 and X1 with upgradeable parts in the first place if they wanted iterative consoles.

for example, maybe a slot or port in the back where you can put in an expansion pack or something.

didn't the N64 and Sega Saturn do something like that?

I seem to remember certain games requiring an expansion pack that you just plugged into a port on the console.

that's way more convenient than having to buy a whole new console.

if GS or Best Buy offers a generous trade in program where you can get the new PS4 for effectively $250 or less, I'll probably go ahead and upgrade.

however, I'd want to make sure that the new console will provide benefit for me as a non 4K tv owner. If you can only notice the performance boost when playing games on a 4K tv, then this isn't really going to affect me.

I reckon many will wait to upgrade till they have a 4KTV.

Yup.. The N64 did it. I was gonna bring that up too. They did it and packaged the thing with Donkey Kong 64. I am OK with the idea of the PS4/X1 being upgradable. Maybe that should be the future.. Like if the PS5 comes out and they tell us that it's the last numbered console.. And from here on out we'll be able to buy the upgrades and slap in it.. Fine, great.. But I do have a problem going 3 years in a consoles life and them saying.. Welp.. Time to upgrade.

If you read the internet.. Console buyers ( more so early adopters) are impulse buyers.. Once every six years or so. We don't prepare ourselves to drop 500 every two to three years. Yeah great.. Cellphone goofballs (more like iPhone) are willing to drop 900 without upgrade on a "new" apple product.. But Im content with my Note 5 until I can upgrade.

I don't want the console market to mimic mobile.. If you want to give us a system that's completely upgradable.. And I can add more memory and a new graphics card ever few years (exams PS branded graphic cards.. That could run about 200-250) I'll get behind that.. But don't add a few bells and whistles to a system and charge fill price.. Three years into a generation.

No. I was too busy marveling at how good TLOU looked on old tech. I don't care for MP gaming at all anymore.. One more reason why I'm feeling more and more of a disconnect with other gamers I guess. I really don't want MP focused games to dictate the future.. Because I basically hate MP anymore. Co-op games are fine but I'm basically done with MP as a whole. MLG, cheaters, etc ruined all that for me.

agreed.

the PS4 and X1 aren't designed to be upgradeable. You can't even upgrade the internal drive on the X1 - at least you can do that with the PS4.

I won't mind if the next PS and Xbox have a more upgradeable form factor - but I'm not sure if the current consoles should suddenly adopt that model.

and I don't want the console market to become like the smartphone market where a new model is released every year.

console owners have come to expect changes in the design of a console during its life cycle, like a Slim model, but those aren't mandatory upgrades. The Slim models don't usually offer a significant performance upgrade.

I got my PS2 at launch and that original model lasted me until I sold it last year.

Same with the Elite 360 model. Got that in 2008 and that lasted me until I sold it a few years ago.

I never felt the need to upgrade to the slimmer models for both consoles. Because I didn't have to.

I upgraded to a Slim once. I think it was either the Reach or Halo 4 model 360. Don't remember. I'm still running my OG BC PS3. My son has it now.

That being said yeah I know we can't upgrade these systems now.. And no I don't think they should suddenly release versions that could.. But Im all for the PS5 and Xbox Next doing that.

The PS4K should be nothing more than a slim line model with the ability to display media in 4K.. Play 4K bluray.. Or stream 4K video and up res current games and future games to 4K on 4K TV's. No more. No less.

I think this is half a scheme to get people to buy into 4K.
Yes I'm sure it is. Sony's 4k TVs and projectors (plus their stake in discs) all stand to benefit and are designed to be good with gaming so I bet a fair number of PS owners will choose a Sony output device.

Well TLOU definitely looked better on PS3 than pc lol! Cheaters and those who are a bit too obsessed are definitely a downer on MP but I'm still into it as much as ever (which is still not that much :woot:). Gaming is going more and more towards online connectivity, not just for multiplier but for co-op and mmo style games (which are more my thing) like Destiny and The Division. But single player games also look gorgeous on good pcs. You don't need the FPS to be as high so you can really crank up everything else.

I think the PS4K is not going to be a big concern for those who don't care that much about the ultimate tech and they will be able to continue to play new games on their old PS4s just with current level visuals (which I guess wouldn't matter that much to them if they truly aren't bothered about the new tech). Otherwise it's just a budget issue for people who would like to be able to play at the higher standard but aren't comfortable with the size/earliness of the upgrade cost and I can understand people not being happy about that.

if the ploy is to get more people to buy 4KTVs, then that can actually be either a good thing or a bad thing.

Best Case Scenario:

As Iceman said, this could turn out not to be that big of a deal. It could be that the benefits of the PS4K will only be applicable if you use a 4KTV. New games that are optimized for the PS4K will look best on a 4KTV but will play fine on the current PS4 and non 4KTVs and look and perform just as games do now.

In this case, this would really be a "niche" upgrade targeted at those with a 4KTV. The rest of the consumer base who don't own a 4KTV will remain largely unaffected. There wouldn't be a need to upgrade to the new console or to a 4KTV.

Worst Case Scenario:

The danger, however, will arise if the new games optimized for the PS4K and 4KTVs suffer significant performance and graphical downgrades when running on the current PS4 and non 4KTVs. Or worse, certain modes, features, and gameplay elements are "locked out" or inaccessible if the game is played on a current PS4 and/or non 4KTV.

just like for some multiplat titles today, the PS3/360 versions lack certain modes and features entirely ( like Story Mode ). So, the consumer is essentially forced to get the new gen version of the game ( and thus own a new gen console ) in order to experience the full game.

if something similar happens with the PS4K and the new games designed for that system, then THAT would really fracture the consumer base. because you are essentially forcing users to not only buy the new PS4K but also a 4KTV to "fully experience" the new games. especially if more and more new AAA titles follow that model.

Well that is precisely what differentiates PC gaming from console gaming. Console gaming is supposed to be one set of hardware per platform for the entire generation. You change that, and you change console gaming into PC gaming with console name brands. I'm not about that, at all.

On GAF I saw a lot of people saying if this is what console gaming will turn into, they're gonna let it go and be strictly PC gamers, because of exactly that this means for console gaming, what I explained. I'm not about that at all, so I'll have to give up gaming for good and find something else to do with my youth life.

^ I hope it really doesn't come to that, XB.

I've always preferred consoles because they are a cheaper alternative to the expensive gaming PCs, with less hassle of upgrading and configurations, and I can play on a console from the comfort of my couch or bed.

that being said, I've been feeling since the last gen that consoles are becoming more and more like PCs, so I'm not exactly surprised by this trend.

in terms of the actual hardware, yes they're more like PCs, because at the end of the day, all video games are just programs, and in order to run programs you need computers.

But the market for PC gaming has ALWAYS been different from console gaming because PC gaming requires you to upgrade every 2-3 years in order to have the best quality possible. Console gaming never had that factor for the consumers to consider because it's always new software on the same hardware for a set amount of time.

yeah. and that's exactly what I don't want to happen.

even if there is a generous trade in incentive each time, I still wouldn't want to have to upgrade my console every 2-3 years.

if for nothing else, I don't want to have to keep backing up and transferring all of my games, saves, and apps every few years to upgrade.

I did notice that actually, I just didn't noticed till you mentioned it that they got updated it. Do you have the power to put the forums back in their original order?

No, I don't. That's in the coding of the website I would assume, so only an administer would have access to that.
