i remember watching one of Bruce Lee's interviews and him talking about how it's so hard to find roles in America because he had to be American enough for Americans, but Chinese enough for the Chinese. he then went on to talk about how he hopes that he can open the doors for Asians in Hollywood.

then i thought about Dragon Ball and how utterly offended Bruce Lee would've been if he were alive today. despite many Westerners preferring to think of Goku as looking like a Caucasian, it's pretty obvious to most DB fans that Goku was intended to have the appearance of an Asian. this kind of casting done by Fox really is a slap in the face to Bruce Lee's cause, especially considering Chatwin has no real experience with martial arts.

Keanu Reeves didn't neither, but it's the freedom that Studios give directors who are actually GOOD. That is the main problem. Someone may not know how lay it down well enough but with a passionate studio and director behind the movie...anyone can kick ass. This movie just has absolutely no PASSION AT ALL!!!!!

Finally saw the movie, and it was crap..as expected.
No character development, movie was too short, terrible actions scenes, and none of the characters resembled their characters in comic book counterparts.
Hated the movie, and I'm glad I watched the bootlegged version for free now that I dont have to waste my money on this crap.
I'll say this movie is around the same level as Van Damme's Street Fighter. (Oh wait, at least Van Damme's one was cheesy fun...-_-)

nathan i agree.
i said it in the SF thread. kreuk is a bad actor. so why not cast a bad actor that knows martial arts? its not like Kreuk has such a big fanbase that it would automatic make a lot of money.

but this is FOX.there is no logic in their decisions. its just so strange.

I agree with this logic. Martial arts films used to have lousy acting, but great fights. By casting the actors that they did we get lousy fights and the acting is still terrible.

...and actually had VAN DAMME a martial artist who gave us some kind of entertaining fight scene. That SF movie is waaaaaaay better than this crap. This movie as bad as "Ultraviolet". This movie makes even the Bible look believable...lol

I'm cynical by nature but I tried to be hopeful. I REALLY tried to be optimistic. I did. Anybody who read my posts knows this. But my God. This was just...bad. And I enjoyed Godzilla '98 & Van Helsing.

After watching the movie myself, I found the problem with this movie is that you really have to be a Dragonball expert to appreciate this movie at all. Surprisingly, it is very faithful to the original source material (of course, with some minor changes), however as it stands by itself, it is a terrible movie…. from bad dialogues to poor action sequences.

Street Fighter at least had the infamous Bison monologue.
Dragonball Evolution has very little (if any) redeeming features. Everything is just so mediocre. I can't see this movie doing much business at the box office.

Yea but at least Van Damme's flash kick was a flash kick don RIGHT compared to the horrendous kame Hame Ha that wasn't a Kame Hame Ha but AIRBENDING??????!!!!!! and Van damme's last fight with Bison wasn't really that good, but it overpowers the entire DBE movie on choreograpphed martial arts overall.

The Forbidden Kingdom Kid did better than Chatwin or any other actor in the movie overall and that is sad. The fight with him and the bully at the end destroys the whole DBE movie in one blow and that is just a reality. I'm sorry, but this movie has NOTHING redeeming AT ALL!!!!!

Street Fighter is over ten years old and no matter what an opinion one has, it shouldn't even be mentioned in comparisson to anything in 2009, but sadly it is being compared because that's how horrible this movie trully must have been. Can't really compare it's wackness to anything in 2009.

Even the old Dragon ball cheese ball of a movie was better than this LOL...

Surprisingly, it is very faithful to the original source material (of course, with some minor changes), however as it stands by itself, it is a terrible movie…. from bad dialogues to poor action sequences.

It actually isn't very faithful at all. AT ALL. Goku was a KID character in DRAGON BALL and he was an ALIEN from a distant planet where he was a SAIYAN, not some ancient 700 year old slave werewolf horrible cgi thing. There is NOTHING to do with AIR BENDING in dragon ball. It is all CHI (Ki) that is actually FIRE and energy, and not just plain air like ANG in Avatar the last AIR BENDER. Goku landed in Asia and happened to physically fit in and not look different as in facial feature wise to the oriental kind which in aspect makes him more of an ASIAN in appearance. Piccolo actually had a POINT in the series and not randomly looking world domination. Dragon Ball never ventured into High school. It is set in ASIA. Chow Yun Phat was far from the correct age portrayal. Balma...just plain and simple; ridiculously out of character. Goku in the manga or anime actually does a LOT of martial arts and is actually GOOD at it. Did Chatwin ever throw a Kick ( horrible fight coordinator)? The Kame Hame Ha does not revive you, it can actually KILL it's opponent with the right amount of chi flow. Very many things were incorrect. Actually more was off than on with character back stories and relationships through out.

Again...nothing redeeming about DBE.

Didn't Wong direct "The One"...he obviously can construct a decent enough martial arts dual out so WTF happened here???

you can not have martial arts action with a PG rating.
The One was PG-13. plus Jet f..... Li was in the movie. the guy knows how to fight.

what also happened? FOX. rushed production,bad script, small budget(the budget is not 100millions) ,reshoots and of course classic FOX editing. chop chop chop chop

I haven't really got much to say about this...film. Never been a fan of the source material so I was thinking that if I watch it with no prior knowledge of the mythos it could be enjoyable. I was wrong. Hammy acting, crap CGI and fight scenes (what was the budget for this?) and just a overall crap fest. That's coming from someone who is just judging this as a film, not because it's different to the source material. I never automatically call things that are different from the source material crap like some people, but I know when i see a crap film. This was it.

Well said as usual Ace! Even as a stand alone film, it's terrible. They could take out the Dragon Balls then this would be some lame action movie.

James Wong fail to bring the manga by changing Goku, there are some funny moments, the fights are not bad, yet nothing even compare with the first tournament "strongest under the heavens, and the final fight should have been bloody as it was in the manga/anime, yet this movie is not the worst as some are putting it, movies base on heroes like catwoman, electra, Punisher, Ghost Rider, the phantom menace, etc are not better or worst than this movie, and well if the 20 minutes missing from editing is true, hopefully is put most of those minutes into the final battle.

Well to be fair, I consider Catwoman and Elektra two of the worst films i have ever seen. But this film is still crap IMO.

Phantom menace is the crappiest movie ever to me, maybe due the expectation i have due the first trilogy, still the fans respond and make a good box office, despite the critics, i remember they called "The Phantom movie"

Worst movies base on heroes can be Catwoman, and the others, but in general, IMO movies like Epic movie, meet the Spartans, epic movie, are worst

The Phatom Menace does not live up to expectations but is still a compitantly produced movie. Dragonball Evolution just feels like a very rushed production. It has little to recommend to anyone who is not familiar with the franchsie (like me) or those who a familiar (they seem to hate it more).

I think this is on the same quality level as Catwomen, Street Fighter and Max Payne.

LOL, it's FOX that we're dealing with here and the budget is small. However, for what it is, it is a faithful adaptation to the original source material, but like I said before, you need to be a total 'Dragonball' expert to pick up the many hints, details, and references to the original manga/anime in this poorly put-together movie. ....Hey, it could have been worser.
