The Official Serenity Thread! (Make no more)

GOD I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
Who gives a crap about how much it made, it is an amazing movie.
It makes recent sci-fi films look like hackneyed crap(well, most recent Sci-fi films are crap).
I remember hearing Jewel Staite was gonna be in this, and I remember having a crush on her in Space Cases and Flash Foward adn I remember being happy she was going to be in something big(It was BIG for me). I had never seen Firefly before it was on Sci-Fi and never saw it til after the film came out, and the Film made me a fan.

So have you seen the series after watching the film?

Did you like the series or the film better?

I liked the series, but I guess thats because they had more time to work through things than in the film.

I kinda see it as one long Movie, but I liked the film more, because they allowed for River to finally change and evolve.

Then post that :o

Quite simply, you cant.

THIS is where I got the sales quotes from.

http://www.sliceofscifi.com/archives/dvd_sales_push_serenity_over_the_top.html

No, its not from Jan 06 and its not 'word for word' :o
At times I am completely blown away by the actions of others...this is one of those times....That link goes straight to a report about how DVD sales put Serenity in the black...which means...for those of you that are paying attention...that it MADE MONEY. Your OWN link, to YOUR source SAYS THE FILM MADE THE STUDIO MONEY! In that article it says the DVD sales figures were from January, 06 and the article is dated Feb. 18, not March like you claimed.

The article you linked, where you got your figures proves you wrong...how poetic?

It says it sold 2 million plus copies as of the close of January 06...which would be income for the studio of 20-24 million, depending on which scale you use.

So...lets revisit the numbers shall we?

$21,450,000 - actual profit from international B.O.
$9,000,000 - DVD rentals
$20,000,000 - DVD sales - lowballing it for you.

$50,450,000 income from BO, rentals and sales. That doesn't include TV rights or merchandising, and represents a low ball projection from figures that were gathered 6 months ago. The reported budget, including advertising was 50 million So the film MADE money. Period, end of story, your link PROVES it, you were misrepresenting facts in order to be "right". You LIED sir. You stole fizzy lifting drink, you lose!

Anything it has made since January of this year, and all the revenue from TV sales, which has been reported to be roughly 5 million dollars is pure PROFIT.

Just to recap...here is the FIRST paragraph from the link you were taking YOUR figures from (and ommiting information from) in order to prove your FALSE claim that Serenity didn't make a profit.
"Newsarama is reporting that the combined sales of theater tickets and DVD sales has turned Serenity out of the red and into the black."

The mind boggles...

Mentok said:
Do you actually read my posts at all? I have included sales of TV rights in calculations.

No...uhm...actually you didn't include them in your calculations...you mentioned them, but didn't include that revenue in your equation. Hell even your fuzzy figures had the film at the point where it was almost breaking even, and failing to calculate that revenue kept your figures below the mark. But, since YOUR link proved you wrong, it's really a moot point now.

Jesus, just let it go man.

The film was a flop.

Oh I see...let it go now that you have been proven completely and totally wrong? Is your ego so bulbous and obtuse that you can't admit you were mistaken? It isn't a flop if it made money...even YOUR own link proves it made money...it wasn't a flop.

I will let the numbers, your link, and the truth speak for it's self.

Any time you have to start bring up the international box office numbers and the DVD sales...you're in trouble. It's as simple as that.

As far as the studio is concerned, you are absolutely right. Serenity is not a blockbuster...it didn't make a huge profit, but it did make money...and a few million is nothing to sneeze at.

Let me ask you this though...regardless of where the income came from, isn't the important thing that it made money?

There is life still left in Firefly, and I would love to see a much less elaborate direct market sequel, or continuation.

Joss has plenty of love from alot of people. I am sure even though the film flopped (pitty too, it was quite well made) We will see more of the Firefly crew in one form or another.

The film FLOPPED. It failed to make any impact in the cinema and failed to make any impact once released on the home market.

You can keep claiming it profited all you want.

Its a failure of a film, the genral public knows that, The Firefly fans know that and JOSS WHEDON knows that.

Pitty you dont.

It isnt a flop if it made money?

Yes, its a flop. The fact Joss Whedon says UNIVERSAL expected atleast $60 Million dollars from the Box office shows this.

It seriously underperformed.

It flopped.

Nope...you don't get to go that route...I said it made money, after that post...you said it didn't, and began trying to prove it didn't make money. You failed at that, so now you want to pretend you didn't even mean that it didn't make any money. If the fact that it made money, or didn't make money didn't have anything to do with your statement that movie was a flop, why would you spend post after post insisting that it didn't make money, until you were proven wrong, then backpeddle and try and shift the argument?

I wouldn't be foolish enough to argue against the points you just now made...they are absolutely right, and I agree..but that was not the point of our debate, and you know it. The post record speaks for it's self.

And it didnt make money.

Thats one part of the film being a flop, the fact it didnrt make any money at the Box Office.

My First post still stands. Its was a good film the unfortunetly flopped at the box office.

I have no idea why youinsist on being such an ass over it for. You would think Its something personal to you so something. Get over it. The film was a flop, my first post still stands. Just let it go dude.

No.

What's important is whether or not it was a success. A 5 million dollars profit margin is no success in the film industry.

Maybe on the sci-fi channel.

The noun version of "flop" has 4 definitions, one of them is "a complete failure" The film underperformed, it didn't meet expectations, or hopes, but it didn't fail completely, Univesal made money, and the film was critically acclaimed, because it was good. That doesn't meet the definition of flop in my book, or...well...the dictionary's.

Plus, as I have pointed out, if it making money or not wasn't what you were arguing, why did you spend ten posts arguing the point, rather than stating it then? You changed focus because you lost that argument...that is a very poor tactic in debate.

Oh jesus, dont even try to start debating what FLOP means

The film DID make money...you never specified B.O. in your first post, or subsequent ones. Not till you were proved wrong.

You didn't specify BO. As I have said, if it had no bearing on your argument, why did you waste so much time trying to prove a false premise?

There is no deabte...it means complete failure...there is no room for debate. I don't see a film that made money, and entertained millions a complete failure. Ishtar was a flop, Last Action Hero was a Flop...Serenity was an underachiever.

Studios survive off of marginal success. A studio couldn't make the numbers work if everything they made was a huge budget, high risk film. The studio will not be dumb enough to spend 50 million on another Firefly project, but they would consider scaling one down, with the expectation of a similar return, thereby increasing their profit margin.

I would think a direct to DVD sequel, or a Sci-Fi channel project would be the ideal venue to explore.

Whatever helps you sleep at night pal :o

I sleep just fine. I work in the industry I love, making money most people won't see in their lifetime, and hanging out with some of the most innovative people behind the films you love to watch. I have a very good life.

I conceeded your points when they were good, it's a pity you can't admit you were wrong about it losing money...it's really simple to do, and would totally turn the tables and make you the bigger man...leaving me looking like a bigger ******* than I already do.

Welcome to the internet. Nobody cares.

Except that the film flopped :o

Wow, telling me to be a bigger man? Lame. Im not the one arguing over what the term 'FLOP' means.

The film flopped badly. Pitty, cause it was a good film.

Have fun with your denial though
