Two Fire Emblem characters is a little boring to me. But oh well.

i know nothing about fire emblem so i cant really say much about the characters, but is it just me or they running out of spots quickly

Eh, depends on how you look at it. We still don't know how many characters are in the game (there are 36 including today's reveals), so if they were saying doing 40 or so, then yeah, cause we all know Ness and Jigglypuff are returning. But if it's say 45? then not so much.

I think Sakurai mentioned that they were getting low on the new character videos. But, considering this video revealed 2 new characters, that still leaves it open a bit. I just wish they would start revealing more of the returning characters.

With the release in October of the 3DS version (and with the rosters being the same) my guess is that we'll probably get one last newcomer revealed right before the release with several older characters trickling out before that.

The two FE characters are cool. I didn't even know Robin was the official name of that character, though. I'm hoping that Lucina isn't just a clone of Marth like she looks like. I don't know why, I just really hate clones of characters, even if I don't use them. I was surprised. Really didn't think we'd get so many reps from FE.

Yeah, he said he's "nearing the end of the barrel", but that could mean two, or even three videos. And who knows how many characters will be in them?

You're right Tron Bonne, I think NOBODY expected Robin and Lucina to be revealed today, it was definitely a swerve, which makes this awesome!

Wow, just realized Captain Falcon was introduced in a trailer with the Fire Emblem Melee theme...

Mind blown...

Lucinda looks too similar to Marth. Using up a character slot for what could amount to a clone character seems like a waste. They still need to announce the old guard of Ness (or Lucas) and Jigglypuff and other favorites like Falco and Ganondorf.

It's being reported that the entire roster and all stages from the 3DS version of the game will be shown in Corocoro, a Japanese magazine, next month. Expect a Direct around that same time period, too, if it turns out to be true.

Sakurai Talks About The Difference Between Lucina And Marth In Smash Bros.. July 15, 2014 . 10:00am

“Whenever there is even a small difference in abilities, that character gets an actual roster slot,” says Sakurai.

Nintendo surprisingly revealed three new characters for the new Super Smash Bros. with Lucina, Robin, and the return of Captain Falcon. Director Masahiro Sakurai gives us a closer look at Lucina, along with her comparison to Marth on his latest Miiverse post.

While Lucina’s abilities are identical to Marth’s, as it must be in her DNA, Sakurai explains that Marth’s power is concentrated at the tip of his sword, while Lucina’s attack strength is balanced throughout her weapon, making her easier to control. She’s also a bit shorter than Marth.

“With the Wii Fit Trainers, the male and female Robins, the Villagers, and Little Mac, varying their appearances and voices works just like selecting alternate color variations,” wrote Sakura. “However, whenever there is even a small difference in abilities, that character gets an actual roster slot. That is why you can select Lucina individually.”

He also added the following close-up look at Lucina, along with an interesting little tidbit:

“By the way…there’s probably no chance you’ll be able to see this in the game, but Lucina has the mark of Naga in her left eye.”

Super Smash Bros. will be available this October for Nintendo 3DS, with the Wii U version following sometime this holiday season.

    GI's Our Take
I'm not personally interested in splitting hairs about slight differences between characters. If characters are fun to play and have movesets I enjoy, I'll use them. However, it is interesting to see how much thought goes into whether a character earns a separate slot on the roster or is relegated to a variation of an existing fighter.

I wouldn't say boring, but I told myself not to get excited until Ridley, King K.Rool, or some non Mario, Zelda, FE characters are announced (or Rayman would get me excited too).

Just Like In Fire Emblem, Robin’s Levin Sword Can Break In Super Smash Bros. July 16, 2014 . 11:03am

“The Levin sword can be activated by using smash attacks,” says director Masahiro Sakurai.

During the recent Super Smash Bros. trailer that revealed Lucina and Robin as playable characters in the game, it was revealed that Robin can fight using both magic tomes as well as the Levin Sword from Fire Emblem: Awakening.

In a post on Miiverse, director Masahiro Sakurai explained how the switch happens.

“The Levin sword and tomes are Robin’s life lines,” Sakurai wrote. “The Levin sword can be activated by using smash attacks—you can even activate these moves in midair!”

“However, just like in the original game, the Levin sword can be used only a limited number of times before it breaks, at which point it takes some time to regenerate. When the Levin sword is unavailable, Robin fights using the bronze sword.”

In a follow-up comment, Sakurai added: “The way Robin launches Arcfire is kind of crazy—he or she calls down a bolt of flame from above, then launches a pillar of fire! By the way, Robin’s tome changes with each special attack.”

Super Smash Bros. will be released for Nintendo 3DS this October. The game’s Wii U release will follow later this holiday.

That's pretty interesting. Makes him more than the usual Fire Emblem hack and slash character.

Yep. As he claimed in the trailer, "I'm no ordinary swordsman."

Robin’s New Ability In Super Smash Bros. Lets You Recover Health.July 21, 2014 . 10:31am

Fire Emblem: Awakening’s Robin will have the first ability in Super Smash Bros. that lets you dish out damage while recovering health.

Fire Emblem: Awakening’s Robin will have the first ability in Super Smash Bros. that lets you dish out damage while recovering health, director Masahiro Sakurai says.

On Miiverse, Sakurai posted: “Robin’s Nosferatu is the first ability in the Smash Bros. series that recovers your damage as it gives damage to others. The attack becomes even stronger if you strike from behind!”

He added: “Robin doesn’t actually use this ability in the original game, but we added that element to make the character unique. Who knows—the ideas we use in this game may contribute to the original series.”

Super Smash Bros. will be released for Nintendo 3DS this October and on Wii U sometime this holiday season.

Mega Man II’s Wily Castle Stage Will Be In Super Smash Bros. For 3DS, Too. July 23, 2014 . 10:00am

Super Smash Bros. will feature different stages on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, but some stages will be common to both versions of the game.

Super Smash Bros. will feature different stages on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, but some stages will be common to both versions of the game. One of these stages is the Wily Castle stage, based on Mega Man II.

Director Masahiro Sakurai stated on Miiverse: “In general, there are completely different stages in the 3DS and Wii U version, but we made Wily Castle and the special boxing ring available for both versions!”

“We didn’t forget the Yellow Devil either,” he added. “There may be some small differences in the stages, such as the 3DS stage appearing to be during daylight hours.”

That's great to hear! I'm actually thinking about getting the 3DS version, since I've upgraded to the XL version.

I thought you guys may be interested in this. It's a flash game based on Smash. It's called Super Smash Flash 2. It's a 16 bit version of Super Smash Bros, and you just play it on your browser like all flash games. I can't get my USB controller to work on it, so I can't even control anybody, but the game looks great. I hope someone makes a proper DLable version of this, so I can get a controller to work.

is it worth buying a wii u for this game?

Depends on how much you like Smash Bros. Also depends on how much you like Nintendo. The Wii U is a dedicated Nintendo console. You won't find third party AAA titles on it. I love the Wii U. I think it's the best console on the market right now. It's got a ton of great features and great games. In between big Nintendo releases, there's a great selection of Virtual Console and Indie Games to choose from.

I have a Ps4, and I honestly don't really give a **** about Nintendo overall... but I recognize that Smash is their biggest game and their most fun to play AND probably the most anticipated Wii U game of all time.

With all that being said, I have enjoyed playing past smash games with my friends, but I always sucked at it, and I really wanted PSASBR to be a substitute smash on playstation but it really wasn't, sadly..

If you don't give a **** about Nintendo, I don't get why you'd bother with a Nintendo machine. Unless you really feel it's worth owning a machine for literally a single game.

that's what people call system sellers, buddy. but the thing is once you have that new console there for that one game you bought, you have it at your disposal for whatever else may come out to spark your interest.

If you have no interest in anything Nintendo outside Smash, then odds are there isn't going to be anything to spark your interest. 3rd party is going to be dead on the system outside the occasional Sonic or Activision game.
