The Ongoing Bought/Thought! 2013

They weren't astounding by any means, but I enjoyed them. And yeah, I mostly liked the Lionheart story. There were definite plot holes in it, but it was still enjoyable.

And wasn't it drawn by Coiple?

I don't think so. "Red Zone" was, but that was written by Geoff Johns. I think Scott Kolins might have drawn Austen's arcs, but I'm not 100% sure. I know he at least did a couple covers in there.

Depends on the comic, to be honest. In general, he tried to mimic Peter's behavior a bit at first, which often led to comedic moments. But since (roughly) around the time he switched to his new costume, he's basically said "f*** Peter" and started behaving more like himself. No-nonsense, not bothering to crack jokes, etc.

Ok because he was ****ing funny in Nova.

Yeah, a lot of the issues of Avenging Spider-Man from when Doc Ock took over to the series' change in title were basically built around the guest characters' being confronted by this weird, awkward Spider-Man.

I wholeheartedly disagree that SpOck was funny in Nova. He was just annoying to me. I can get the whole trying to act like Parker and therefore making it easier for people to look skip over it but now that he's just turned into an a-hole I don't see how all of the characters act like nothing has changed with him. He says some off the wall stuff and no one calls him on it. That's what annoys me with this "storyline."

Everyone knows there's a big change with him, though. The first issue of Superior Spider-Man Team-Up has the Avengers confronting him because he appeared to be attacking other heroes, and they mentioned that they'd all noticed a lot of strange behavior from him even before that. I think the Avengers had a similar, even more involved scene like that in the main Superior Spider-Man series where Peter got put on probation or reprimanded or something.

I guess I just want them to move faster and get rid of SpOck :wall: . I love Parker's humor and wit and I may be in the few but I love his personality on the Avengers. If I want to read a narcissistic, foul mouth, a-hole I'd go read something with edit: Deadpool, at least he's funny.

Eh, I don't really care about Spider-Man either way, so I've been enjoying Doc Ock.

Well seeing as how Nova is one of two Marvel books I buy this was my first experience with Spock, that's cute by the way, and I found it funny.

From someone who's never dealt with SpOck before it was a funny few scenes. From someone who's seen SpOck on different occasions he's just annoying but that my gripe. The new Nova ongoing is awesome :hehe:

I've only read him in his guest staring stint in Daredevil and I hated it.

Pretty good sized week. The only book I was considering but didn't get was Astonishing X-Men. I was only buying it for the Iceman arc and was considering this one since it was supposed to be the aftermath. There were definitely aftermath moments, but nothing about it made me want to lay the $4 down for it.

On to what I did buy:

Wolverine & the X-Men 35 - The conclusion to the Hellfire Saga was full of action, but somehow left me unfulfilled. I liked the Nightcrawler cameo. I'm still annoyed that no one in the mansion seems to ever question that they're overrun by little Nightcrawlers. I don't think it's even been mentioned since issue 1. They just accepted it.

Anyhow, the issue was good. I'm glad that Husk and Broo seem to be back in their right minds. I like that Kid Omega is taking a step toward heroism, and I even liked his being with Idie (though I'm pretty sure he's a few years older than her... her being around 14). I was hoping for a concrete ending to the kid Hellfire Club, and it seems we have, but not to the characters. They all lived and are on their separate paths. I am glad that Krakoa made it through this because I thought for sure Aaron was going to kill him off.

All in all it was a good issue. Above average for Wolverine & the X-Men of late, but not as good as the past couple of issues. Still, it was decent. I just might continue with the book post-Battle of the Atom. We'll see. Also, the Nightcrawler cameo kinda sorta made me excited for Amazing X-Men. I just miss the Fuzzy Elf :)

Uncanny X-Men 11 - I really like Frazer Irving on this book. While I like how Bachelo draws the Cuckoos better, I think Irving does a better job on everything else. The story itself was pretty good, though it felt a bit strange. I don't know who sent the robot thing and I'm hoping it's someone interesting. I don't know if it's tied in to Battle of the Atom or if it'll be touched upon later, but I guess we'll see. He reminds me a little of Archer, from the last year or so of the original X-Factor title.

I think a large part of what bugs me on this book is still the costumes. Particularly I can't stand Cyclops' or Magneto's looks. Magneto's specifically. I just get annoyed every time I see it. Still, it was a very good issue. I enjoyed it just fine.

Uncanny Avengers 11 - Oh my God. How is it possible to have a title full of this many awesome characters and with this much action feel so slow and dragged out. I feel like this story is going nowhere. There are just too many characters and too may plots that it's making the story move at a snail's pace. I'm honestly beginning to debate on whether it's worth my continual purchase. I like what's happening and promises of what's to come, but I feel like we're never going to get there. I think this is definitely a title that'll be better when read in one sitting.

Also, has Remender always been this wordy? I don't remember him being like that in Uncanny X-Force or Punisher. I guess maybe he was a bit wordy in the End League, so maybe it's a style he's coming back to. I don't know.

Still, it was a good issue. I'm just ready for this plot to move forward.

Young Avengers 9 - This book has fallen to "skim first" status for me, but this issue was pretty good. McKelvie's art is gorgeous as always and I liked everything having to do with Prodigy. The romance focus is starting to get annoying. It felt like half the plot has been focused on Hulkling and Wiccan's relationship so far and now we're turning it into a triangle with Prodigy. I'm not a big fan of romantic triangles. They annoy me.

Still, the story has definitely been getting better since the first arc ended, but this aimless chasing for two issues has been a little boring. I feel like the two issues of plot should have been a single issue, but that's just me. The book stays on "skim-first" status, but it's not dropped yet.

New Avengers 9 - The first official New Avengers tie-in to Infinity (though issue 8 took place between Infinity 1 and this). It was pretty decent but mostly setting the stage. Thanos' soldiers attacked the Illuminati individually while searching for the last Infinity Gem. It was cool to see Wakanda win (though we didn't actually see it) and then to see Namor lie to send more of Thanos' troops after them. I want to call him a *****e for that but Wakanda kinda has it coming this time. The Wakanda/Atlantis feud is the best part of this book right now. It's what keeps me coming back.

This was definitely a good issue, so I'll just keep on trucking with the book and with Infinity for now. I'm very interested in where this is all going.

Talon 11 - I've been enjoying this title but this issue was kinda boring, and the art was horrible. It was dark and muddy and I sometimes had a difficult time figuring out what was going on. And I was hoping for an awesome Talon/Bane fight but it wasn't there. I suppose that'll be coming after Villains Month (with Batman in tow), and hopefully it'll be better than this issue was. It wasn't a bad issue. Just disappointing.

Aquaman 23 - This story felt hastily wrapped up before Villains Month. I mean, a lot happened, and it was definitely entertaining. But unlike previously mentioned titles, I think this issue could have benefited from stretching another issue.

That said, this isn't the end of this storyline, but there's definitely a break in the story to allow for some suspense while we focus on the villains. Aquaman's rather large cast contains some of the most diverse and 3-dimensional characters in any book I read. I love everything about it. I never thought I'd say it but Aquaman is one of my favorite books right now. It's certainly the MOST consistent, and that says a lot.

Justice League 23 - Ah, here's the big one... the conclusion to the Trinity War. Sadly, Marvel and DC feel the need to spoil their stuff in advance so what could have been an awesome ending ended up being just a shrug because nothing in it was a surprise. We knew the box led to Earth 3 and we knew the Crime Syndicate was behind it all. Knowing that, we could also figure out rather easily that the Outsider was Earth 3's Alfred Pennyworth. The only thing I didn't see coming was the Atom working for the Outsider (her being from Earth 3), but I think that was because she was so obviously I assumed it wasn't her. Based on the Free Comic Book Day preview of this story and Batman running with the box and Batman being on Forever Evil covers... I assumed Batman was going to be the traitor somehow (mind controlled or replaced).

I think it's also safe to say that the Justice League are going to be sent through Pandora's Box to Earth 3, which is why they are "dead" for Forever Evil... but instead of that happening here, it's "To Be Continued." So this isn't a definitive end to the story at all. The story continues into "Forever Evil" next week, where I assume the Justice League's demise will be played out.

Still, all that aside it was a good issue. What happened to Cyborg was brutal and I'm curious how that plays out. I also liked Constantine's role in this story. Trinity War was a fun read, and while it wasn't the best thing since the New 52 started, it was still enjoyable. I find myself very excited for Forever Evil. THAT'S what I'm waiting for.

Best and Worst of the Week

Best: Aquaman - While it did feel a little rushed in places, it was still a solid and excited ending to this story (or at least this portion of the story). I'm eager to see how this story plays out in October.

Worst: Talon - I do enjoy this title, but this issue was a big disappointment. Hopefully it'll pick itself back up after Villains Month.

Battle of the Atom starts next week!!!!!! Just finished reading Uncanny X-Men 11 and am thoroughly happy that the last X title is out the way (it was a great issue still, though the art has to grow on me). I'm too stoked for Battle of the Atom. I'm finding myself more invested in the X titles than any other books that I read.

I've not seen anybody mention it so I'm calling it. Future Xorn is Shogo (Jubilee's baby). I just have a feeling.

Until Rich comes back and shows this punk how to be a real Nova, the series stays on permanent ignore.

I am just starting to read Annihilation and while I like Rider I'm not minding the new Nova book, its the only one i have read, why so much hate for it?

For me it's because it pales in comparison to Richard Rider's last Nova book. We went from an amazing cosmic title to yet another "I'm young and with powers... weeeee!". I've read that a thousand times. I'm bored with it. If you're just now starting Annihilation, you've not seen how great a character Richard becomes. After reading all that, you'll probably see why people are annoyed at people like Thanos and Star Lord being made major players while Richard is ignored.

Without ruining anything, it doesn't even make continuity sense for there to BE another Nova right now. And I'm not a fan of the "wait a year or two and we'll eventually explain it" excuse that Marvel often gives.

I really don't WANT to like Goldballs... but I can't help it. He's like Boulder (Butterball). You just can't help but to root for him a little.

There should be a Goldballs/Butterball team up.

For me it's because Rich was pulled out of near obscurity and in a very skillful way grew into a fantastic character. At the time when hero was fighting hero during Civil War, when I was sick of what Marvel was doing to their heroes, Richard was out in Space fighting against actual villains, not compromising his morals even if it would have been the easy path.

He was anti everything the Marvel universe had become.

Plus he went from overwhelmed and unsure at the Start of Annihilation to competent war general to savior of the universe to restarting and forming an entirely new Nova corps. He was infected by the Phalanx and manipulated and depowered by a corrupt Worldmind and yet still found a way, through sheer will and a sense of heroism, to fix the Worldmind and save the Universe. Not to mention he basically told Iron Man to grow up and suck it.

Richard was awesome, and deserves more than to be replaced by another Spider-Man clone with cosmic powers. (Also as mentioned, it really makes no sense that Sam can be a Nova without Rich around)

My 2 cents about one of my favorite Marvel heroes.

Uncanny Avengers #11 - Once again, Uncanny Avengers proves to be one of Marvel's best titles. I'm still not a fan of the painted, undetailed art accompanying the last few issues but Remender's writing is fantastic. If there has ever been a title that deserves to be double-shipped, this is it. With an initial planned 25 issue storyline, this series is taking forever to get going. It's painful waiting for each new installment and I find myself forgetting what happened in the previous issue by the time the next one gets here. I guess I'm being spoiled by the timeliness of Hickman's Avengers. Additionally, this issue saw the supposed death of [BLACKOUT]Wolverine[/BLACKOUT]. Yeah. No way Marvel has the balls to make that last more than an issue or two. Death has become such a joke in the MU that what should have been a shocking moment comes across deserving nothing more than an eye roll. Minor gripes aside, this series has yet to see an explicitly bad issue and for that I have to give Remender major kudos. 4/5.

Bought but not yet read: New Avengers #9.

EDIT: This isn't really a complaint but Uncanny Avengers doesn't really feel like an Avengers title at this point. What was meant to be a cross-brand title has essentially become the second volume of Uncanny X-Force. As someone who loved Remender's UXF series, this isn't a bad thing but this series could definitely use some more influences from the Avenger's side of the company. Maybe this issue was just a little too mutant focused. In any case, still a great issue and I cannot wait until this arc is over to re-read the whole thing in trade.

That's another bad thing about all these double shippings. They make the titles that aren't double shipping at all (Uncanny Avengers, Thor: God of Thunder, etc.) feel so dragged out. It can take the enjoyment out of them for some people.

You're definitely right. I don't hate double-shipping (if something's good, I'm not gonna complain about getting more of it) but every other title feels so slow now. Uncanny Avengers has a ton of story per issue but it's been almost a year and we're not even halfway through the first (mega) arc. The early delays definitely didn't help though...

I say, cut Avengers back to once a month and double ship Uncanny Avengers if Remender wants to write in such long story arcs. Hickman's doing the same thing but at least Remender's seems to have an endgame to work toward.

Hickman has an endgame in mind as well. I want to say he's writing a 3-act play with Infinity being the end of act 1. But I could be remembering that wrong.
