The Dark Knight The Oracle Post (Universal)

We also need to make sure that all the viral websites are checked for updates that day and probably around the same time the games start. Do we have any "oracles" that would be willing to do that? Meaning that they aren't necessarily attached to a city, but are ensuring that new info on viral websites/voicemails/emails is posted?

This is a really good point. Oracles, can it be done?

That's what I intend to do in the time before the game starts. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

There'll be a few of us checking in on all the websites at the time, so there should be no worry there.
And do all the cities have a decent amount of Oracles by now? This should be something done by today, so we don't have to worry about it tomorrow.

I'm an oracle for Chicago but I can also do Toronto. I'm in Detroit, so I'm between both of them. If interested, shoot me a PM.

Thought this might be useful...

A Shotgun primer to IRC

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) allows communication in real time with people from all over the world. It consists of various separate networks (or "nets") of IRC servers, machines that allow users to connect to IRC.

There are several ways to access IRC, the most common being a standalone client program that connects to a server on one of the IRC Networks.

There are many IRC clients available for several operating systems AS WELL AS Web-based options that run within a browser window. The functionality and options vary from client to client. The easiest client you're going to probably see is mIRC () for windows.

Once you install an IRC client you will need three pieces of information to begin chatting: A nickname for yourself, IRC network server address and a channel name. The channel is simple the room you're looking to chat in. The nick you can figure out for yourself and the Speakeasy server info is:
Darkmyst irc network
address: paranoia.il.us.darkmyst.org
channel: #speakeasy

So for whichever IRC Client you install you need to find a 'Connection' window, button, menu option or dialogue (depending on your semantics) and should be fields to input the above server info and then you will 'connect'.

Once you are connected to the server you will type '/join #speakeasy' and the channel should appear and you're good to go.

More in depth primers with info on commands, services and other IRC features: http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/ircprimer.html

There is a web-client set up at the Speakeasy, but please be aware that in the event people flood the website (as is prone to happening to SHH during crazy viral moments, it might take a while to load. The standalone IRC client & Server will ensure that even if all the ARG sites somehow crash, the chat room will be open.)

Oracle Manifesto:
Things to keep in mind regarding tomorrow's game

1. 42 won't send you into harm's way during rush hour for legal reasons.
2. 42 did a dry run, "about an hour" means they timed their trail.
3. Brush up on all presidential history, and memorize the money/portrait details
4. Make sure the runner always faces or knows a common direction (north is good) when you talk to them.
5. Speed runs are possible if one oracle keeps good trail notes (local friends inform buddies to lurk in the area for a txt or twitter)
6. Checkpoints will most likely be homogenous (144 different checkpoints is way too much), so if one team falls behind on one city, keep an eye out for common clues.
7. I'd recommend a local scout in each town get a feel of the area and report into their respective city
8. Games will probably utilize symbol recognition, words and numbers, and possibly, GPS coordinates. If they used google maps once, they're hinting we do too.
9. Baseball. Sports bar folks realized that all 10 North American cities only share a baseball team, not a basketball team, football team, or hockey team.
10. Remember, 42 has to run this by the book, and probably didn't run through the trail. Keep a speed team handy.

Ah, IRC. I use it once and year, forget about it and then have to spend twenty minutes re-learning it.
Everyone seems on the ball. Bring on tomorrow!

In the New York thread there are a few of us with out oracles...no one is reall orginizing in there :/

I live in Canada, so I wouldn't be useful for an Oracle. But I think as long as there's a handful of Oracles for each city and the rest of us Birds here on the forum solving clues but not sticking to a city, everything will work.

If any goons still want an oracle, I'm willing to do it twice. I'm booked for Chicago, but I'd be willing to help before or after.

Well I live south of St. Louis and I'm helping someone in Philly, and possibly some people in KC.

Are we using the IRC for all oracles?

so there will basically be an oracle headquarters on some site where we can help spread info? And how are we to get this info to the ground clowns (people actually there). I'm kinda confused. Hopefully I'll be helping ground clowns in NYC.

You guys get organised fast, good job. I don't live anywhere useful to be an Oracle, but I'll be watching. I'm sure plenty of us bystanders will be working on all the clues and offering help.

The beauty of this game is that you absolutely do not need to live near the places with people on the ground. It's the game's fair opportunity to let people who don't live in or around the cities to continue playing. It only really becomes hugely problematic if you actually live in another country, in which case there is little doubt that your phone bill would be sickening.

Love how this is all coming along guys, good points.
I'll be checking up on facts and history for the city of Seattle, and i'll also be making sure i am aware of any updates to all viral sites.
We'll all be very well prepared by tomorrow

I'll be in school when all of this goes down, so I wouldn't be of much use as an Oracle. But I'm willing to help with the puzzles, trivia, riddles and checking up on sites as much as I can. Though, my iPod doesn't have flash on it (and I won't have access to a computer until 5:30 Pacific), so I wont have access to the Speakeasy . Will we be solving these puzzles, riddles and trivia on SHH as well?

I think there will be people still on SHH to go through that kind of stuff, but it might be VERY busy and therefore not too reliable.
Never hurts to try though, haha

Holy wow, this is an amazing post with extremely useful points and it deserves to be quoted. Thank you.

Oracles, please abide by these guidelines! :D

ALL RIGHT. Here's some DEFINITIVE ORACLE CHAT INFORMATION, summarized from above in one handy easy-to-use post. I'll also be PMing this to the Chicago people who've sent me PMs.

Nerium has been awesome enough to set up an IRC chat for us. This can be used two ways. Way 1 is for people unfamiliar with IRC, who have no willingness to set up a client for it:

WAY 1, or THE WAY OF THE NOVICE: MIBBIT
Before there used to be a more bare-bones browser-based client, but after some confusion, nerium decided it was best to get rid of the bare-bones one in favor of the much more user-friendly Mibbit version, and I have to say, I agree. Here are some simple, easy-to-use (I hope) instructions for those of you who may be daunted by the concept of using IRC (because I totally would be):

1. Go to http://www.gotham-speakeasy.com/?page_id=8.

2. Scroll down until you see a window that looks like this--it should be near the top:

fwrsjc.jpg

3. Click on the link that says "MIBBIT" at the top (OR, alternatively, you can go to www.mibbit.com straightaway. YOU CANNOT SIGN INTO MIBBIT VIA THE SPEAKEASY SITE. You MUST click on the link in order to get there.

4. Click on the "Server" dropdown menu. Scroll down until you see Darkmyst.org near the bottom like so:

2cponlg.jpg

5. Under Channel(s), type in "#speakeasy"....Under Nickname, type in your nickname (mine being "cinematheque" here of course):

j9q8a8.jpg

TO GET INTO YOUR CITY-SPECIFIC ROOM, type in "#tdkyourcity" (NOTE: ALL CITY-SPECIFIC ROOMS ARE LISTED BELOW)...mine here being "#tdkchicago":

rwibk3.jpg

TO ENTER BOTH ROOMS SIMULTANEOUSLY, which you will probably want to do, in the place where you have to input your username and desired channels, input "#speakeasy, #tdkyourcity" (all the city-specific chat names are listed below)--so for me, I'd put "#speakeasy, #tdkchicago" thus:

r73uxi.jpg

6. Voila! Chat! Easy peasy!

WAY 2, or THE WAY OF THE ADVANCED USER
(I'm assuming all here have a working knowledge of their own IRC clients and how to configure them for each individual chat. Also, all this information is available at the Speakeasy site and nerium has included all this above as well, but here is what you'll need:

DarkMyst IRC Network
server: paranoia.il.us.darkmyst.org
channel: #speakeasy (or #tdkyourcity)

IF YOU ARE A NOVICE INTERESTED IN GETTING AN IRC CLIENT:

nerium has set up an IRC primer available in this thread, directly linked here:

http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=14665021&postcount=56

I suggest doing this only if you are familiar with IRC in the past, or if you have enough time to get acquainted with it now. Trying to acquaint yourself to it during game play will probably confuse you a lot.

Still, whatever you decide to do, I advise you test it out to make sure you're not confused on the day of.

Why do we have both a general #speakeasy channel and city-specific channels like #tdkchicago and #tdksanfran?

It seems to most of us that all the locations are going to have some degree of specificity, although they will probably have several things in common. Nevertheless, throwing all the Oracles into the same room and saying "Go!" will probably result in chaos. Thus, nerium has created individual, city-specific chat rooms for any given Oracle to enter IN ADDITION to #speakeasy. It is possible and very easy to be in both rooms at the same time, so we can talk specifics within our cities, and generally in the #speakeasy channel.

Nerium put the master list of city-specific chats on the Speakeasy site, but here it is reproduced for your viewing pleasure:

MASTER LIST OF IRC SPEAKEASY CHANNELS:

Main Room: #speakeasy
Chicago: #tdkchicago
San Francisco: #tdksanfran
Boston: #tdkboston
New York: #tdknewyork
Philadelphia: #tdkphilly
Kansas City: #tdkkansascity
Sao Paulo: #tdksaopaulo
London: #tdklondon
Toronto: #tdktoronto
Dallas: #tdkdallas
Seattle: #tdkseattle
Los Angeles: #tdklosangeles

DO NOT PANIC if you still don't know what I'm going on about. Just send me a PM with questions and I'll clarify, although I think this is pretty clear. Essentially, all you need is a browser and the ability to read, which I'm pretty sure everyone on the Hype has.

IRC is a high-volume and fast-paced client, thus, made to support higher user volumes and cleanliness with the added ability of logging for advanced users. This is awesome and much more fitting for game play. You can be simultaneously logged into the Flash Speakeasy as well if you'd like to be, although #speakeasy and its subsequent city rooms will be used for game play only.

Again, if you have any questions, PM me or message me through AIM at MakesYouStranger. Or, just show up in the Flash Speakeasy and ask someone if I'm not getting back to you fast enough.

Anyway, when all is said and done, it's all right here:

http://www.gotham-speakeasy.com

Nerium, I salute you!

I think you might want to combo the city with something like #tdkChicago
...the rooms created are gonna be on a server with lots of other users, so a generic room named Chicago might get a little confusing.

Not sure what you meant by number 9. Care to clarify? Because Boston, for example, has the Celtics and Bruins, not just the Red Sox.

He means that every one of the US cities has a Baseball team. Not all of them have a football or basketball team. Baseball is what they all share in common.

And if you recall from San Diego ComiCon, the baseball bat is one of Mr J's favorite weapons. :joker:

Shoot me a PM if you are in need of an oracle. Im in the eastern US so I could probably be the most help for those cities.
