The April 25th Addendum
I'm bumping this post up because I've seen people mentioning the buddy system again and it seems like a lot of people didn't hop on board last time and might still be interested. I also know that a lot of availability has changed since this last time, so people may be new to the game/their buddies may have dropped out/they may need a buddy now when they didn't a month ago.
Anyway, I have a few text message buddies and we try to keep each other updated in case anything crazy pops up, although many of us have been slacking. Nevertheless, it's pretty useful, especially for those times you can't be on the computer, or even worse, those times when you can be, but you just happen to be doing something else. (I mean, if you were doing something you couldn't get out of while a game went on without you, that sucks, but not as much as doing nothing worthwhile while a game went on without you.)
Mostly here I want to stress the Speakeasy (which is still thanks to the magnif nerium, and is at http://www.gotham-speakeasy.com/...if you have Flash, you can get in). It's a good place to go while a game is going on because with enough people in there, someone always notices an update in a pretty timely fashion and then tells everybody else. Similarly, I've got a couple text message buddies from the Speakeasy just by asking if anyone wants to be text buddies and they're awesome.
Also, it's a good place to go to chillax and discuss the game in off-time, like theories you might have or ones you've seen getting thrown around. At this point it's also a good place to show up if you want someone to summarize something that's going on now, or recently enough so that it's not up on the Wiki yet. (And, you know, like the first sentence in this paragraph...the Wiki deals with what has happened but this gives you another forum for guessing what's to come.) That, and a lot of us just hang around in there in our spare time and talk about nothing in particular, so if you're bored and wanna sit around talking about nothing in particular, feel free to join us.
If there's a high enough demand, I might still make the spreadsheet I talk about in my original post (preserved and unchanged below) with Hype names/AIM names/text messaging yes/no? business somewhere, or I might try to find a place where you could add that stuff to a database yourself, and give you the option of including your phone number somewhere mildly public or just saying that you're interested in texting and anyone else would have to contact you through PM/AIM to get it.
Anyway, this game's pretty much foshiz about the networking, and this system not only works but has provided much entertainment to me thanks to the Speakeasy, so, you know. Bumpity bump.
And uh, without further ado, here's the old post, unchanged:
So uh, I was thinking that a lot of us are particularly terrified of the "blink and you miss it" nature of some of the virals; mostly, I think we're terrified that we're going to be doing something stupid and miss it because we'd really kick ourselves then.
This is basically just a "declare thyself!" post, and hopefully if we all have a couple of buddies the chain will be secure enough so that it'll be like the good old days when you blew into a conch shell and shouted, "News team, assemble!" and they were already in the room.
My suggestion is that we post our preferred methods of communication (I expect this would be primarily AIM and text messaging) and hook up with other buddies that way; hopefully, buddies with schedules different than ours.
I'll start: I'm available for AIM and texting, but am booked to my eyeballs in class on Tuesday/Thursday. Mostly, I'm available on the other days of the week and expect to be pretty vigilant. If you've got free Tuesday/Thursdays and busy other days, drop me a PM with your info and I'll give you mine.
***I was also thinking maybe we might set up some sort of established AIM chat that people can wander in and out of at any time. Unless there already is one? It'd be a good way to get word out faster and talk about nonsense in the mean time.
***Last, I think it would be good to have some sort of user-edited time table where we can all declare our availability, but I don't know of any websites offhand or know enough code to make this possible myself. Anybody know of anything?
...and if anyone can figure out how to make this sound less ridiculous, then drop me a line. Because, uh, I suck at explaining things.
In the end, if all else fails, just get everybody's contact information you can with the promise that I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine. Although the funny thing about my back is that it's located on my
ETA:
1. Thanks to the magnifico nerium, there is an online flash chat located at (http://www.gotham-speakeasy.com/). I beg the following things of you:
Please, if anything comes up--a new site or a scavenger hunt--revert to the boards to solve any puzzles, because they keep better record and are visible to everyone later, whereas the chats are not. Additionally, a room in the chat tops out at 50 people, so anyone not in a specific chat would be left out. And some people just don't have computers that can deal with Flash chats without committing hara-kiri.
This chat is not to render the boards useless, but to enhance them, and to cut down on people showing up 30 pages in and announce that they've found something we found on page 4. It's for helping out people who missed parts of any given game and want to join in without being expected to read 30 pages (which multiply as you read them). So if you see someone in need of a briefing, help a sister/brother out!
Additionally, if everyone in the chat is sort of chillaxing and you notice something nobody's brought up, use it as an alert system.
And personally, although this is just my plea, try not to talk about how much sex you're getting all the time. I'm all about free love, but seriously, a girl can only roll her eyes so much before she develops vision problems. We're on a virtual message board dedicated to superheroes. I think we all know about how much sex we're getting.
2. I've made a Facebook group at (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10145787590), so join if you're on Facebook and become an admin if you can. The more admins, the more likely it will be that we'll be able to message all group members when something comes up.
3. I'm working on a chart with SHH usernames/AIM screennames/texting yes or no for future reference, but this'll take me a few days because of some major assignments.
So, that's it for now. Thanks again nerium for creating the Gotham Speakeasy! It's a million-dollar idea.
EVEN LATER AND PROBABLY INFINITELY MORE USEFUL ETA:
All right, so I've made a Twitter account dedicated to game updates. The username is why_so_serious, and here for your ease is a link:
https://twitter.com/why_so_serious
I'll try to share this in the Speakeasy when more people are around as well (and if nobody volunteers to help a girl out then I'm willing to stoop to the creation of an entirely new thread for it). I desperately need others to help keep this Twitter account up-to-the-minute. With enough people I seriously think we can have any updates on new or changed situations, big or small, within seconds, and they can be sent to a number of people simultaneously through different media. So please, if you're interested, PM me, and I'll hook you up with the password so that you, too, can update it!
And don't be afraid if you're not familiar with Twitter. I just signed up with it and I'm thinking it's got a pretty friendly interface, and it's very easy to update--just like updating a Facebook status, really. There's a big giant "What are you doing?" box in which you'd type updates. It's easy; all it requires is that we've got people around to update it when it needs updating.
Happy hunting!
