"Dark Knight" plans re-release for Oscar push

r

By Carl DiOrio

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Batman wants an Oscar.

To be precise, Warner Bros. wants a statuette -- or 10 -- for "The Dark Knight." So the studio plans to re-release its blockbuster Batman sequel in January, the height of Academy Awards voting season.

"It's just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people," a studio insider explained.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with Imax execs over the prospect of restoring the Christian Bale starrer to some giant-screen venues in January. It's uncertain if "Dark Knight" also will reappear in conventional venues at that point.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film's huge commercial and critical success has spurred talk of possible Oscar nominations for its director, producers and cast -- most specifically Bale's co-star, Health Ledger, for the late actor's edgy performance as the Joker.

To date, "Dark Knight" has rung up about $512 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in Imax grosses. A pre-Oscars re-release would help assure its topping $1 billion worldwide.

But with the title set to hit DVD in December, it's now apparent anyone hoping the Batman sequel would soar to "Titanic" heights will be disappointed. "Dark Knight" already ranks as the second-highest-grossing movie ever, after "Titanic's" phenomenal $1.84 billion -- a mix of $600.8 million in domestic box office and $1.24 billion in foreign coin registered in 1997 and 1998.

I really do believe "The Dark Knight" has a shot at the Best Picture nom, considering there doesn't seem to be too many Oscar bait films coming out this fall.

Ooh, this could end interestingly. I hope it can top Titanic... If it gets the extra push, I think it'll go over the record just by a little.

I wish it could beat Craptanic. But IMO at most it will pull in only a couple million with it's re-release. Unless they'll do a SW & add like 30 minutes of stuff not on the DVD.

Sweet. This is great news. This movie definitely deserves a heap of awards.

Just to be clear, this wont delay the DVD, correct?

....it says in the article the DVD will come out in december

:wow:  :hehe:

TDK's success makes me so freakin happy! WHAAA! :woot:

Could you imagine back in 97 that one day a batman movie would be getting an oscar push? It really shows just how far the batman film franchise has come.

Okay good. I missed that part...

But, believe me, I will be seeing this when it is re-released.

Yep. Kind of makes you appreciate Shumacher for supremely f***ing up Batman & Robin, cause if he hadnt, the entire timeline of the Bat-movies would have been screwed up and we would have never gotten TDK.

Thanks, Joel.

So maybe I'll get to see TDK in IMAX on my birthday after all. :yay:

(Or...well I'll still be :csad: about it since it'll be the one-year anniversary of Heath's death...:csad: )

And even though lots of people are saying it's a long-shot for a BP nom, I disagree. You cannot ignore a film that is so beloved by critics AND gotten $500 million domestic. If the Academy want to retain any sliver of public relevancy, they will have to nominate TDK. It's really that simple, IMO.
