The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

Batman will 100% appear. It'd make absolutely zero sense for him not to do so, and it'd even make less sense for him to only do so "in the shadows". He seemed hyper-aware of the fact that Oz and several criminal organizations were gonna make their moves in the end of the movie, he already knows Oz is thirsty for power, there is nothing that'd have a higher priority to him than that and I'd suspect that a great part of the show that'll make it different from other gangster shows is that Penguin will be building his empire while having a vigilante breathing down his neck.
I’m not expecting him to appear because I think he’s shooting the Bong Joon Ho film soon. But I hope you’re right. Maybe the show takes place over the course of a couple weeks (late fall, early winter) when Batman is busy with the flooding and just helping ppl + making sure some of those gangs don’t wreck the place up even more. Isn’t the Iceberg Lounge flooded too?? So maybe Oz moves his operation to some secret new location. I don’t know but it’s going to be interesting to say the least. I hope they don’t contradict the end of The Batman and keep everything tight.

Yeah, an appearance from Batman would obviously resolve this potential issue I could have with the show. But in the event that it's not possible due to scheduling conflicts (as Shauner mentioned), I do hope there's at least a reason given.

Although then again, if it's a cameo type role, with Batman maybe only appearing for the last episode, I'm sure Rob could film that and the Bong Joon Ho film simultaneously. He did the camera test while filming Tenet, after all

I think that has already been resolved in the film. Batman said, " I must choose my targets carefully, It's a big city, I can't be everywhere" He can't be aware of everything that's happenning in the city and I assume all this penguin stuff will happen when Batman is very busy saving people in more deserted areas of the city.

Eeeeh, while true I still think Penguin's activities would be a major priority. He says at the end of the movie that people will try to take advantage of the situation and I don't see Batman standing for that.

Sure, he's not gonna be constantly on Penguin's ass given the situation, but I can't say I'd buy that he wouldn't keep track and do something once it escalates

He looks like a guy who would appear on a very shakespearean play and go mad plus he fits the age of the casting call.

Hey talking about casting calls any of you have an idea of how those work? Actors are approached or anyone with acting experience can go and audition for the part?

Seeing how the Bong Joon Ho film is a WB film I think they can make the schedules work.

Ignoring the organized crime element already bit his ass hard in this movie and again, he seemed hyper-aware of the power struggle that'd ensue not only in his monologue but also in his talk with Selina at the end. Saving people is nice and all but with the military already there it'd be better for him to put his priorities on trying to stop the power vacuum to create an even more disastrous situation for the city. Batman can't be absent or ignoring the organized crime element. He just can't. It wouldn't make any sense and any explanation would feel fake.

I don't even like the idea of a Luke Skywalker cameo thing. It's once again, something that'd feel fake. This is his city. This is the power vacuum he was so afraid of at the end of the film. It's a criminal he's already met several times before. I'm not saying he has to appear in every episode, but he does have to make several appearances that are more than just cameos and has to be an active player on all of it. Why would he wait until the very end to get involved in this when the mob wars are the most dangerous things going on there regarding criminals?

We don't know how extensive the Military's involvement will be or for how long. Could be they're helping the immediate rescue efforts. Given it's only certain parts of the city that seemingly got flooded (given Batman rides a motorcycle to the signal at the end) I feel like there's enough wiggle room to keep their involvement more minimal. Which in turn would require Batman to pick up the slack, which would explain why he's not more involved with the war on crime. He'll still be there, in the shadows, but he also has priorities in the light now.

Obviously, if we can get more, I'd 100% take that. But realistically and practically, it relies on Rob's availability in all likelihood. The only other way to get around that would maybe use a stunt double and have it be from criminal POVs. Shoot him like a horror movie monster. Which could work but also runs the risk of the main plot threads amounting to "Batman just beats everyone up LOL". Which to me personally would be far more fake than a cameo from Rob himself. That can far more easily be worked into the plot without amounting to that.

Now I’m worried, cuz Invader has a point. I really don’t think Rob’s going to be in this. Not even a cameo.

I think Rob will manage to be available. He only has the Bong Jong Ho film lined up, which is a WB production and I doubt it'll take that long to shoot, and Colin in an interview implied that the Penguin show would shoot in a span of 6 months. If let's say Batman only appears in 3 episodes out of the 8 episode season, that leaves enough room for Rob to appear.

And given that the US government declared martial law, I think it's pretty likely they'll stay around a bit for all the rescue efforts, but even with the whole "hope speech", Batman's priority still has to be the mob because again, it was not going after Falcone and the corrupt politicians which caused this mess on the first place. He cannot allow Falcone 2.0 to exist. Obviously Penguin will end up being the kingpin and outsmarting Batman, but Batman needs to make an active effort to stop that. After everything that happened with Falcone in this film I just don't think there's any justification that'd cut it.

I don't know for sure, but I imagine for bigger movies/tv shows the auditions aren't for just anyone, assuming they're not looking for complete unknowns. It's possible the audition notices are only sent to certain agencies. A certain level of experience might also be required so they don't have to waid through thousands of auditions for the part of Black Mask, for example.

Here's hoping Rob is more available than not. As I said, obviously more is better when it comes to Batman's potential involvement. To an extent anyway. At the bare minimum, I do reckon we'll get a Skywalker type cameo. Which while not ideal would be better than having him not appear at all. You can at least write around that limitation via having Batman be an obstacle behind the scenes. Mentions of drug busts at his hand, other crews getting subdued by him and arrested, that type thing. Then, he comes for Penguin in the last episode. Wouldn't be perfect, but I'd at least be content with that.

And while true, martial law is in effect at the end, we also don't necessarily know how soon after the movie the show takes place. Furthermore, the amount of time martial law being in effect relies on how extensive the damage to the city is. If the show, say, takes place 6 months later, I could honestly see the military pulling out at that point depending on how extensive the city damage is.

As I said, I do agree that Rob being in at least a few episodes would be ideal. Not anymore than that, to ensure he doesn't overshadow Penguin in his own show, but still. However that ultimately does depend on the scheduling and it's entirely possible that things just might not line up for whatever reason. But at the same time, I do think a Skywalker style cameo is a corner that can be written out of, essentially.

I'm just hyped to know who is gonna play Clayface. He will be the first actor to play him in live action after all this years.

he was in Gotham, but I recognize most people don't count that

I hope it’s the Tarantino pick. Meaning an actor who has been kinda forgotten over time and not used to his fullest potential lately.
Hmm very interesting. Not trying to sound ignorant but why Tarantino?

If it wasn't for Batgril I think Brendan Fraser could've nailed this role in the direction you are talking about

He’s known for doing this with actors. Travolta in Pulp Fiction. Robert Forster in Jackie Brown. David Carradine in Kill Bill.

They should do it but with Nic Cage or John Cusack for Clayface haha

Alright, this **** is just going in circles.

Matt, for the love of God, drop some details.
