The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

If this is true, Robert is likely an original gangster character that Oz will carve up. Sending a message to everyone post-series. Rupert Thorne for sure (I’m ecstatic). Gotta be Clayface. Either the name given is fake or “Matt Hagen” and “Basil Karlo” are just names of characters he’s played. Would he become a gangster himself? A set up for the sequel? Or just a madman who has a recurring role in the Arkham series?

I hope it’s real because this is so exciting.

It is 4chan though. So huge block of salt.

Jett did tease Clayface for some reason though...

Frame jobs. Extortion. Blackmail. Hell, as a true master of disguise he could even function as a hitman.

Clayface would be a useful asset.

let's bet on which actor gets the role, it would be easy to just suggest known actors but there's the possibility that they are searching for lesser known actors

with clayface, imagine how hard it will be for batman to try to track down a criminal who could look like anybody.

would really push his detective skills here.

and if they do rupert thorne, will it be his corrupt politician in the original 70s strange apparitions arc?
or will he be a straight up gangster like in the animated series?

and his story was tied to hugo strange in his original comic book appearance too.

I like what I'm seeing. Using lesser known villains and characters true fans know and love for the mini series and the most famous ones for the movies. Reeves is keeping a balance.

I can’t get Croc/Domingo out of my head. It doesn’t even have to be Croc but the idea of Domingo playing a violent gangster who isn’t just a henchman...give it me! As the lovely brits would say.

I honestly don’t know much about Great White Shark. So that intrigues me.

Thorne surviving this show could be such a great setup for Dent, Lawton, Strange, Cloud. You can use Rupert to connect so many dots. BTAS Rupert-Harvey conflict is the way to go. They’d probably cast a character actor.

Character actor for Rupert or Harvey? or both?

rupert blackmailing dent on his mental illness could also draw parallels with what happened with martha wayne, and it will galvanize bruce to do everything he can to save harvey.

it would really set up how tragic dent's story would be.

Any Penguin comics they can take inspiration from? I haven't read any but want to know if you guys know of some that could work.

Paul Dini did a great Penguin story a few years back in Detective Comics #824.
Lots of characters they could use to flesh out Gotham's underworld.

Black Mask
Clayface
Deadshot
Great White Shark
Killer Croc
Maxie Zeus
Rupert Thorne
Salvatore Maroni
Tony Zucco
Ventriloquist

Tobias Whale as well, although he’s kind of a knock-off of Marvel’s Kingpin. He was in a great Batman limited series called Gotham: Underground, which was very much a gang war story with the Gotham crime lords and even a few costumed villains all vying for power after the (supposed) death of Black Mask. Hugo Strange is even involved. Definitely worth a look for any who haven’t read it yet.

If he wasn’t in Joker I’d be championing Camp too but I’m super picky with repeat Bat actors. They’ll cast him if they want anyway but we’re only a few years removed from Joker and I’m just weird with that stuff. Same when what’s his face from Rises was cast 7 years later as Thomas Wayne. I’m sure i groaned at that too.

Anyways, isn’t he way passed 60? Like my Don Johnson pick?

He's in his late 50s, Joker was 3 or years ago but he had a very small role, people should've forgetten his role by now.

Theory time:

“Robert” is young cocky Roman Sionis. Same age as Bruce. Handsome sadist. “Logan” is middle-aged Basil Karlo. Debts not payed. Roman sends goons over to disfigure him. Karlo can’t get any stage work because of it, goes mad. Penguin offers him a contract. A large sum of money (and the acceptance Karlo craves) in return for his services. “Use your skill set for me”. Clayface is born. Stealing, planting drugs, murders all in disguise, you name it...Penguin uses Clayface to do his dirty work. They melt a mask on Sionis’ face for revenge. Just gruesome ****. And kill his employees. Oz then throws Clayface under the bus when he becomes the prime suspect. His clever ass puts everything on the madman ex-actor, getting Clayface tossed into Arkham Asylum (which sets up that show). Meanwhile the word’s going around the underworld regarding Penguin’s takedown of Sionis. He is now taken seriously. Little does he know Roman is alive and Black Mask is born.

Where the hell is Batman during all this you may ask? He’s still replaying Selina’s recording in his batcave. He simply didn’t realize the time!

Now, this isn’t taking Rupert Thorne into account so my idea may not work but :funny: I’m just having fun spitballing. Trying to think of ways to use Black Mask in this. I’m sure Robert is just a random young gangster..

Tbf I do hope there is some explanation for why Batman isn't gonna be stopping stuff that happens in the show.

To not do so risks indirectly displaying Batman as incompetent in some way. You don't need much, just an off hand mention of how "The Bat's too busy with X, Y, Z to notice this rn" and that'd be fine.

i still fully expect and hope Rob appears

Batman will 100% appear. It'd make absolutely zero sense for him not to do so, and it'd even make less sense for him to only do so "in the shadows". He seemed hyper-aware of the fact that Oz and several criminal organizations were gonna make their moves in the end of the movie, he already knows Oz is thirsty for power, there is nothing that'd have a higher priority to him than that and I'd suspect that a great part of the show that'll make it different from other gangster shows is that Penguin will be building his empire while having a vigilante breathing down his neck.
