I thnk he's fine. This movie is about making an epic battle even more fantastical and him being that big helps serve that purpose. Not to mention the obvious symbolism between Xerxes and his much larger army against the much smaller Leonidas and his army.

Plus, like Nivek said, that's how it was in the GN.
