And these are from another unrelated training exercise. Also, my first assignment, and the lens was really dirty, as you can tell.

These are all raw images, aside from cropping some, I don't think I tweaked them at all in Photoshop.
awesome

....how in god's name did you clean that?

Guys I would like to start photography, I have a somewhat vintage minolta camera from the 80s...I think its the best camera I have for photography.

^^^ Thats my minolta cam but I need to get it fixed since I broke the lens.
So just a few questions...Should I get a new camera? Can I fix the lens myself or do I need to pay for a service? and how exactly do I start taking photographs...just take a snap at anything I see thats "pretty" ?

Thanks for the help (for anyone who answers)

If you want to learn to develop your own pictures(which is fun), nah, just stick with what you have. I used to use an older Cannon, it was great.

I use digital now.

uhm....
is it a SLR or just a plain camera?
from the look of things on this angle i say it's a SLR
if so then just buy a new lens, try something about 50-200

i've been planing to get a minolta film cam for weeks now!

and as far as what to shoot try and look for interesting things and unusual angles and ways to look at things. Also, for composition try not to break the frame in 2 with a middle horizon, generaly you want the rule of thirds, so trirds are good, but hald is bad)
allthough some here like the_ultimate_evil and so on are probably way better at this than i am.

and, what is wrong with the lens? what's broke about it?
the camera is great though, use it well

also, here are some pics i took today, well, they are night time pics with a long exposure, i used my tripod
i call them church studies (yeas i know, how unoriginal of me)

I dont mind using older cameras but the disadvantage is you dont see the picture right after like digital

I dont know the difference between SLR and regular. But the lens is just cracked down the middle, I think I might just go to a camera shop and ask them to fix it.

Btw, your pictures are nice...a lot nicer than what I can probably do. Where is this?
When I went to Europe I had a chance to take lots of cool pics of cathedrals but my parents wanted pictures with people in it only and told me not to waste the film :down

hmph, people are overrated
it is.......ready for this.........Romania :D
a SLR (single lens reflex) is basicly a camera on which you cam switch lenses when you need to. IF i am not mistaken, pressing that metal bit on the left side of the lens and then turning the lens will release it, the lens is broke if it's split in two, but you can get a new one (if i am not mistaken and that is a SLR)
and the anly disadvantage of film is taht you can't see the results imediatly. However wilm grain will always look better than digital noise.
let me know if you managed to get the lens off :)

I wanted to go to Romania really bad, I hear count dracula is originally from there  (yes, there really was a Count Dracula btw)
But yeah, Im gonna fix up the lens...I really want to get into photography, it looks like a fun past time.
Thanks again for the help :)

...yes, i know there really was one, his name was vlad tepes, he held the Romanian (not transilvanian!) throne in 2 stages, 1456-1462 and another verry short one in 1476
in 1462 he had a big war going on agains the turcs led by sultan muhammed the second that he actualy beat ina a cunning ruse by entering their camp at night with a small group of people (under 500) all dresed as turkish soldiers and until morning, caught b surprise the turks basicly chopped themselves silly out of panic, he lived to rule again too. :)

I know these things, i live here! :)

Kay. I'm giving you feedback, you sure as **** better return the favor.:o

These two are spectacular. I love the way the shadows fall on the second. The negative space on the third one is really nicely done.

I don't like the fourth one, the gradient-like nature of the building face does not sit well with me.

Anywho.

Few more:

Next time I do something exciting, I'll make sure to post lots of pictures.

Meh.

NM then.
you'll get your feedback

here's some general feedback on your pics through the thread. Your pics are superbly executed, perfect aperture and exposure in every single pic, the images are crisp and extremely well focused, but, with some exceptions........they don't do it for me, they don't get any message through, i don't know what it is but something is missing....
exceptions are the sniper ones and one at training where they're running single file and turning left.......
oh, and the chopper one with all the crud on the lens, the crud works well for that photo :)

What do you mean don't get the message through?

They were all for articles, if that helps.

Great topic! Inspiring, makes we want to grab my camera and start snapping away! I might post some of mine on here, just trying to organize them all for starters.

This is all stuff I did on assignment. Bear in mind I'm not a professional photographer, I'm a journalist. So I have a ways to go. But I try.

The following are all pictures from a period of MOUT training conducted a while ago.

These are incredible. My school always has pics from the photography classes hanging in the halls, and I have to admit that the stuff never really impressed me at all. But the pictures I've seen in this thread, especially these, are absolutely incredible!

Keep up the good work!

Ok, im not trying to soften the jury over...but...these are mine
