Just got my first published shot in the Belfast telegraph. Byline and all. Not a bad way to start the week.

DV8 - I would agree with what Alistair said about blowing the whites, this might have happened because you are putting up the contrast. I know that this means all your water splashes are correctly exposed and look amazing, its a tough call in this shot as the splashes look great, but for the other one without the water I would have tried to get more definition between the building/dress too. I'd also be careful of playing with the vibrancy too much, the shadows in this shot on her dress have gone blue which is very distracting to me.

I like the shots comps though, was this a model and a proper shoot that you set up? I wish I could do that!

yes, I believe it was the contrast actually; I changed a lot of the original settings in Camera Raw to achieve that effect, and I appreciate the input; like I said, I was going for a more stylized look but that is a good point that I'll keep in mind when doing this in the future; even if it's stylized I can still retain the details in the white in photoshop; I will also keep in mind keeping the natural shadows when punching up the contrast like that . . . it really did wonders for the sky and grass though . . .

and I am lucky enough to know a LOT of pretty girls that like taking photos LOL; this shoot was mostly for my own experimenting though, but yeah we scheduled to meet and shot pretty much what we felt would look good; thanks for the input

Midnight sun - I really like the new version of the goat shot! I think that crop and the darker lighting both work much better than the original, nice work =)

Luna wolf - hehe everyone wants to play with Tibor! He's awesome. I really like your shot with the person and their suitcase... the perspective you've captured works really well I think!

Thalidomide - really like the sunset photo, nice job

ultimate evil - Congrats! getting stuff published is always a great feeling, can we see the shot they published?

DV8 - wow you are lucky having friends that don't mind/enjoy doing shoots like that, I bet its loads of fun and the results are great!

Some photos of my beloved seals, I work/live with these guys in the wild for 3 months of each year so have a big soft spot for them even if they are evil =)

Loving the Seal shots, Saf.

Last image the seal is doing a naughty pose.

I must go to the zoo soon. I love taking picture of animals.

Thanks. I'm trying to conform to the rule of thirds but realize I need a lot more practice with it.

I thought this would be fun, what was your first camera? Also, share some of your very first shots.

The first camera I bought was in the late summer of 2004. We were all going as a family to a wedding in Canada so we all decided to drive up there. The day before we left, I went to Best Buy and picked up this camera. It was a Gateway DC T50. It looked like this:

Here is one of my favorite shots I got on that first trip with my 1st camera:

Decided to see how my camera(Nikon D50) worked with the moon -200mm
The exposure length goes to 30 secs which bummed me out because I wanted
to take some nice images of the stars.

I would post some of my first pictures but, I don't have a scanner.

Nice Camera! I heard Pentax is still making cameras with that pyramidal shape, but they're mirror-less now. If you have time, just take a picture..of your picture :P

It was a good camera. The only thing the batteries operated was the light meter. Manual focus, shutter speed, and aperture. Excellent camera to really learn photography with.

Sometimes I wish I learned those things on my first camera, but a point and shoot is pretty limited...plus nobody I knew was actually good at using cameras. Now that I bought my first beginner's DSLR, it's the opposite, I'm picking up everything I can. I just got a variable ND filter and am thinking of buying some graduated filters to try out for some landscape shots. Still haven't bought any strobist equipment yet. I'm also thinking of taking some beginner courses to help me tune my compositions and learn more about photo editing.

Lunar, do a crop and it will bring forth your image and really make it "pop." Also, you should have a setting called, "B" for "Bulb" it should let you open the shutter long as you want. The trick is not to long though for it can really heat up the sensor and cause noise. FYI, a lot of people who do astro tend to stitch their images together between 30 seconds to 10 seconds. I would recommend getting a cable release and if all possible get a wireless. If anyone else gets serious about Astro look up: Luis Argerich Photography

This is the camera I learned on! I still have it in the shed believe or not. =) Good beginners camera, IMO. I know my 60D wipes the floor with it, but I really do miss film!

Vari Filter? I've been looking at a few myself, and a Hoya CPL. The one Vari Filter I'm looking at is the Fader II, but I'm still up in the air to be honest with it. If ya have a good one can ya take some shots and see what it's capable of? Thanks!

Strobist equipment, or any equipment can get expensive. I'm up to 5 flash's already, and I need a few more stands but for what I'm doing I need the filters ASAP to be honest. I'm currently teaching my lighting style to a guy in my camera club for he wants to shoot sports. So I'm showing him how to do it sport wise.

Everyone else,

Keep up the good work! What I'm going start doing is pushing my lighting work as of now, since I understand it and going make it more complex as I'm curious if I can do it or not! Gotta keep reaching further!

Hey guys I just returned Japan. How do I post pics on here from my iPhoto library? Do I have to remote-host them on some website or can I just put them straight up like on facebook? Hoping for the latter, but I can't figure it out. Yes, I'm technologically illiterate. Thanks.

Upload it in a image hosting site then copy and paste the URL :) I hope that helps

Thalidomide - really like the sunset photo, nice job

Thanks :)

I got myself a Singh Ray filter and am thinking of their graduated glass also. I love CPL's and use them a lot when I go shooting somewhere with water, but it does flatten your image sometimes.
