The politically incorrect thread

"Political Correctness" is constantly changing, based on how much the "politically correct" people think they can get away with. The way things are going, the following "politically correct" policies will be introduced in the near future:

Making motor vehicles illegal unless you can demonstrate to a public servant that you have a "need" for a vehicle, since vehicles produce "greenhouse gases", and we are obligated by an international treaty to reduce "greenhouse gases".

Making pedophilia legal, since it is already legal for homosexuals to adopt children, which violates the right of children to be brought up as normal people, and since many of the political activists who promote "Political Correctness" are pedophiles.

I say let's stop all this polical correctness and give more people guns so we can deal with this future horde of pedophiles.

You sir, are an idiot...

Firstly, political correctness is merely a term expressing the recognition of something that has been deemed correct in the political realm.
Political correctness, in liberal states such as ours, although highly subjective, usually involves recognition of peoples rights- not the denial of them. For example it is not "politically correct" to refer to minorities by discriminating or derogatory terms, like the N bomb, sexual discrimination or other eqully offensive terms.

The two ideas you have suggested are not "correct" by the standards of ordinary people, nor the political realm. Although, perhaps the first idea would be good to reduce green house gases it would be unlikely to gain support from the public, and thus unlikely to gain political support.

The second idea is ethically unsound - and could not in any rational person's mind be deemed "correct'. I am deeply offended by the suggestion that political activists, who seek greater protection of human rights, are all pedophiles. Peodophilia involves denying the rights of the Child.

I am similarly offended by your suggestion that homosexual couples adopting children somehow denies children the right to be brought up by "normal people". Homosexuality IS normal!

Pedophilia involves disrespect for the rights of a child, homosexuality doesn't infringe on anyones rights.

There's a difference between being politically incorrect and just being a bigoted *******.

Would it be un-PC of me to call you a moron?

Definition from Wikipedia.Com...

"Political correctness (adjectivally, politically correct; both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is a term applied to language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to gender, racial, cultural, disabled, aged or other identity groups."

In other words, it's a method of avoiding "hot button" or "controversial" topics, just to maintain the status quo. But what if the current status quo isn't working? At what point do we stop being deathly afraid of ticking the "wrong" person off?

When is okay to offend people based on their gender, racial, cultural, disabled, aged or other identity groups?

It's not ok ....but it's not fair to infringe on the rights of one group in favor of another....that's where political correctness goes awry....

"Political correctness" isn't about infringing rights. Infringing on the rights of one group in favor of another isn't "correct" by any standards, political or otherwise.

I'm guessing you're most likely refering to the right to free speech being "infringed" by rules preventing discrimination. That's not an infringement on your right to free speech at all. No rights are absolute - freedom of speech does not extend so far as to infringe on the rights of others.

Whooooosh. To paraphrase two famous quotes, there's irony in everything message board posters do. Message board posters are my theme and let satire be my song.

Word!

I'm still looking for the sense in this post. Nothing yet.

 @ Psychocheeseman.

Exactly. Political Correctness is about not offending someone, not about promoting them over someone else. That would be politically incorrect as it is offense to another group.

I'm going to ask the same thing I ask to white guys who complain about not being able to say the N-word when black guys can...

Why do you want to say something that would offend someone so badly? Why is it so important to you that you be able to call someone a name deemed offensive and inappropriate?

They don't, it's just principle with them, which is actually a pretty ****ty way to look at it. It's something a 5 year old would get mad about.

I'm not saying we should completely quit caring about people's feelings, or stop treating folks with the basest decency and human respect. However, there often come times in life when standing for a just principle is far more important than worrying about who you'll be offending.

As American citizens, we need to start realizing that doing what's best for the country is sometimes more important than avoiding confrontation. We need to quit saying to ourselves, "Oh, I can't say or do that, because what would they think?" Guess what, people? Some issues can only be resolved through confrontation, be it moral, physical, or idealogical. Far too often, we avoid conflict like it's the plague, and this country (if not much of the world) has worsened because of it.

Some hope this one has....

Look deeper still!

Bored now, so perhaps some explanation is needed. So what is political correctness, how did it start and how did it become so successful? Political correctness is first and foremost an attack on free speech, clear thinking and discussion. Political correctness is perpetrated by the left in politics as a cover for their flawed ideology - a sort of cultural Marxism. By cloaking their strange ideas under the cover of not wishing to offend anyone (which naturally appeals to peoples' better nature), they try to bypass debate and give a 'received wisdom' which must not be questioned. And anyone who disagrees with this 'received wisdom' must therefore be a really nasty person and deserves to be ostracised by their peers. This peer pressure is instrumental in enforcing and expanding political correctness. Obviously the statements in the initial post are hilarious, they do however show the mob mentality and ostracism.

Or perhaps this was a troll thread. Who can say?

I think you hit it pretty close to the mark on this point. In recent decades, nearly every subject - health, taxes, religion, national security - has fallen victim to this. People are so scared they'l hurt each others' feelings, that it stops them from having the important discussions, and making the tough choices.Taking that into account, it's not that difficult to understand why America is currently so messed up.

Many of the problems we have today weren't that prevalent 50 years ago, and the reason why was because large groups of people got together, and fought the "status quo" to change this country for the better. Segregation was outlawed (a huge moral and social improvment), birth control was made widely available to those who'd choose it, and the U.S. finally made peace with the Russians. All of these are more than commendable...but now, we stand on the edge of yet another precipice, and instead of fighting it, many people act like they'd rather jump off to escape the conflict. Well, I have news for these people: most of the people fighting you don't care whether they offend you - they just want their way, and unlike you, they'll do everything they can to get it.

Take the religious aspects, for example. I'm not deliberately turning this into a debate thread, but think about this: why have many atheists generally become more successful in recent debate than Christians? Because in this day and age, a lot of religious people are scared to death of standing for their faith, even against the corruption in their own government. They don't want to offend anyone; meanwhile, a lot of nonbelivers run around making so-called "progress" simply by voicing their opinions loudly and often. As a result, many of the traditions this country was founded on have fallen by the wayside...because most believers honestly aren't willing to fight for them. They've become too preoccupied with what others will say, think, or do.

You obviously didn't read that definition

The "hot-button" issues you're referring to is whether we shouldn't call black people "negroes," women "hoes," homosexuals "queers," or speak in other generalities and stereotypes which are considered offensive by the communities they affect.

You really have no idea what you are talking about.

There are NO "important debates" which need to occur in American society which involve the revocation of politically correct terminology or standards. None. In fact, I cannot see how being politically correct has harmed the debate on the four issues you listed above.

This certainly wasn't a "troll thread."

"political correctness" is not an attack on free speech, and no one attacked you because they believed you didn't have a right to say whatever you wanted to in the first post of this thread. What you said was vile and disgusting, and fueled by pure ignorance. You generalized all activists as pedophiles, implied that homosexuality and pedophilia go hand in hand-- you want to say that, fine, but your right to say whatever disgusting, worthless things you want does not mean that others cannot call you on your ignorance.

And no, the statements in the initial post are not hilarious, they are contemptuous. They are also anything but true, and instead of opening a debate on political correctness, those statements only highlight the collective stupidity of the world-at-large when it comes to those topics.

There is NOTHING to debate about when you say that all activists are pedophiles, considering 1) that isn't true in the slightest, and 2) "pedophile" is a politically correct term on its own. Oh well-- we can't all be bright.

Again, I don't know which issues Americans need to confront which involves the revocation of politically correct ideology. Can you give us a few examples? Specific examples-- not just umbrella terms such as "national security" or "religion."

I sense your blood pressure has gone up. The internet is not a good place to be if patenetly absurd and inflammatory posts (posted for whatever reason) enrage you. Please be rational or gain a sense of humour.
