brought the gun to kill himself with if he came out of the experiment horrifically disfigured.
I also thought that he killed the clone every night so he wouldn't have duplicate Angiers to keep track of. Borden is able to keep the twin disguised at all times, but Angier is too selfish, and would want all of the accolade for himself, and he knows this. When there are 50 Angiers, that could get quite complicated, LOL.

The clones were just like canaries to him at that point, to kill off during "THE TURN" and he would be there as "THE PRESTIGE" to experience the glory. That is why he frantically was trying to escape when Borden found him in the tank.
So in every performance, the duplicate Angiers who finished as "THE PRESTIGE" ended up drowning in the tank in the very next performance. Each new duplicate ended up killing unintentionally killing himself.
Ironically, the very last duplicate died the same way as the original Angiers: by a gunshot. All the ones between drowned.

Angier knew it was a dupilcate on the balcony. It was explicitly stated he sacrificed himself. He said something like, "Do you know how scary it was knowing I was the one going in the tank every night?" to Borden near the end. He knew the Prestige was a copy.
It seems that everyone thinks that he was doing this trick to outdo Borden, that he just wanted to have the best trick and that's it. I thought it was fairly obvious it was all a trap. There were only going to be 100 shows. He was completely single-minded in having this show put on. It was intended that Borden be framed, that's why he didn't care about him being in the Prestige the way he was getting upset about it before. His obsession was so fargone he didn't care about not having fame or dying, as long as he could get back at Borden. He was struggling to get out of the tank because:
1. It's a natural reaction to drowning. You freak out and spasm. It's why you can't just shove your head in a sink or bathtub and kill yourself, like he did after his wife died. Your body won't let you let yourself drown.
2. Assuming he could just die peacefully, if he did, Borden would know something was up. From Borden's perspective at the time, it was an accident and he was just being wrongfully accused. He couldn't know Angier planned it yet.
That's why Tesla was so wary of giving him the machine. It wasn't because it would escalate the magic trick arms race they had going, it was because he knew Angier would do anything to get revenge.
Also, the original Angier didn't die of a gunshot, it was a duplicate. You said yourself a copy was on the balcony. It doesn't transport things at all, it makes a copy somewhere else. The original Angier died during the first time he fully performed the trick.
It seems to me people are going out of their way to make Borden to be the good guy in this. Angier does bad things because of madness from grief over a dead wife. Borden does bad things because he wants to be impress audiences. Borden caused unhappiness in the lives of others the whole film, in the pursuit of showmanship. Killing Angiers wife because he thinks the trick would be more impressive with a stronger knot, letting his double treat his wife like **** so he can keep doing the transported man trick, etc.
It seems like people just want to give him the benefit of the doubt because they like Bale. I similarly admit, Cutter did some underhanded things, but I still think of him as good beause I like Michael Caine. But some of you guys are ignoring parts of the story so that Batman comes out on the moral highground.

The version in the trailer was definitely different from the way he said it in the movie. When he said it in the trailer, it was creepy and badass, but in the movie, his voice cracked slightly, as if he was scared.
So he and Angier are both similar in that they let themselves be killed, knowing that they would live on in another person. Death is still frightening though....

Some things I had never thought of, yet I still thought of the movie as Leto Atrideshttp://www.superherohype.com/forums/member.php?u=31406 explained it, Jackman killing himself every night and the machine never really transporting him but I will say it again, I really need to see it again!!!! However. I also really WANT to see it again! And I can kinda see what you mean about everyone liking Bats, I mean myself for example, Batman kicks Wolves butt any day! :heart:
Chill out, man. The movie isn´t a blockbuster, but it´s doing very well for itself, especially considering it opened agasint Flags Of Our Fathers, which competes for the same audience and was directed by Clint Eastwood, that The Departed was still playing well and that only a couple months ago the similarly themed The Illusionist did very well. The Prestige dropped only 35% in the second weekend, a very good hold that indicates strong word of mouth. It should make close to 60m, very profitable for a 40m budget movie, and should sell very well on DVD.
I agree with you and want to add that Flags of our fathers opened on more screens this weekend and The Prestige took more per screen . This movie is doing great for a adult themed period drama . The Illusonist was budgeted at 16 million and has made 38 million, so the movies both had an audience and made there money back.

It's great just how many interpreations can be made, and how there are single quotes throughout that can completely change things. I really like movies like this, they provide a lot of entertainment even outside actually viewing it.

Angier had to delve into the realm of the supernatural and repeatedly commit murder (or suicide, depending on how you look at it) to replicate Borden's trick, and yet the trick was actually incredibly simplistic at it's core.
