Thats cool man, I work at a movie store and I state my opinion on the two flicks, and not everyone agrees with me

just for me, the illusionist does what a great movie is supposed to, made me forget its giamatti, and norton, and they give these inticing performances that get me so caught up, i throw the suspended reality out the window for 2 hours. The Prestige while being a directors craft, kind of does what you don't want a movie to do, in my opinion, you don't want to be watching a movie telling yourself "gawd Nolan is a ****ing genius" like the director shouldn't matter while watching the movie to me, and then after i can talk about all the rad things in that movie and be like, "man that director nolan knows what he is doing.

I thought both where good though, I think I gave the Prestige a 7/10, and I would give the illusionist an 8/10

Even if I'm not agreed with you, I respect your opinion.

The choice of the better movie depends on kinds of cinema goers. Some prefer to watch romantic and fantastic love story movie, while others are looking forward to mysterious thrillers, which are full of unpredictable and logical twists.

As for me, I always prefer 2nd category, not just because of great direction and amazing cast, but also because of excellent script.
 
Not to bud in on the current conversation, but quick question:

Does The Prestige have enough replay value to buy?

Usually with these movies, I debate whether to buy them.
This movie blew me away, but it won't again unless I can magically forget that I watched the movie.
 
Im definately buying it. This is a movie you can watch over and over, and you definately have to see it twice.

it's definitely the kind of movie you find something new in every time yo watch it. i'm buying it for sure.

I dido your first point, I mean whatever, I know a romantic mystery isn't the most thrilling movie ever, and normally I would side with your thought like if we are comparing gone with the wind and goodfellas, of course i'm picking goodfells, gone with the wind is art, but i just can't watch it that mcuh.

And again I did like the Prestige alot, I mean its not top 10 of the year for me, but I will buy it (My opinion Warhammer, is it is a buy), and I did just love it, there was just something about the delivery of everything involved with the Illusionist that made me feel like I was reading like a great book or something, I dunno I dug both, just Illusionist a tad bit more
 
Today I've finally seen it!!!

I read the book 2-3 times and it always was great for me. The same I can say about film. Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors of new
generation. His filmmaking way and vissual vision are amazing. That's why he's in my TOP5 of favorite directors.

Now I am happy to say that The Prestige didn't just get me immpressed, it showed me how the best movie of the year should look like.

I'm gooing to start my review with script aspect. What I think about it? Nolan brothers (Christopher & Jonathan) have written just perfect script and at the same time very unfaithful adaptation. In the movie, almost every detail is changed or just looks different, I felt that there had been only 30-40% of stuff from the book. It's clearly seen that Nolan didn't want to show faithfulness or try to repeat everything from the book. They were going with experimenting to find a new way of storytelling for adaptated screenplays. I loved all flashback scenes and this tanglend web of events, because it wasn't so hard to understand everything, what was shown on screen. Why? Because at the end I found that all main twists of film had very realistic approach, what made them look and sound logical. So in my opinion, film even won with changed story. I was waiting to see something new to leave theatre with dose of emotions and thoughts, and I got it.

The next step is cast. First of all, I would like to say some words about superb acting of two leading actors, Christian Bale (Borden) and Hugh Jackman (Angier). After Batman Begins I realized that Bale & Nolan was one of the best duets of actor and director, they were born to be partners. With every new film Bale acts better and better, now his quality level is even higher than DeNiro's or even Pacino's. His thoughtful eyes, mysterious look, unpredictable deeds show that he is a master of his trade. What about Jackman, he has also has amazed me. Nolan explained Jackman his character very well, so that effected on his play. I must admit that after such bad movies as X-Men 3 and Scoop, he proved me again that he can act with the help of The Prestige and The Fountain. But the man, who really deserves Oscar award for Best Supporting role is Michael Caine. His monologue about system of every magician's show was tremedous. I also was sureprised by Scarlett Johansson's and David Bowie's performances.

Nolan made his new masterpiece, he doesn't need to prove anything now.
At the end, I want to say that The Prestige is my 2nd favorite movie and it deserves 10 out of 10 rate from me.

I really enjoyed the book and the movie gave me a good feel of that time period. I didn't mind the changes from the book, I mean I knew what happened in the book and to see something different happen in the movie was cool but I still like the book better. It almost seems like in the movie Jackman is the bad guy and Bale is the good guy, where as in the book neither is really considered good or bad.
 
ok i have two questions:
1. did nolan wanted that i notice very quick that bale is playing two guys?
i didnt knwo that he was hes brother but in the dark when he was walking i knew that it was bale. then when i reemmbered hes wife saying to him that she knew when he loved her i knew where the direction was going.
2. what was the main twist of this movie?

i still think that nolan is a very good director and i still think that bale and jackman are very good actors. this mvoie was very good. i rate this move 9.5.

I think the twins story is just misdirection. You think that you know the twist, when you realize that Bale is acting in both parts, while the real twist is the fantastic element of the Tesla machine.

Dunno. I figured them both out. The twins stuff and the cloning. But after the movie I kept thinking wtf was the thing that was supposed to be the big mystery. Must have been the Angier clones. Which one was which and when did the real Angier die? Very good movie still. I'd give it 4 out of 5.
 
i watched this movie again. this is that kind of movie that you have to watch at least two times.

what i noticed:
1. the first time he clones himself he kills the clone. than ever next tiem the clone survives. the original dies in the first show i guess.
2. one of the brothers is very angry that he doesnt know how he did the trick the other is not. when he first sees the trick he than screams on hes brother why can he not found out the trick. then we have a scene with hes twin brother drinking and looking and its where nolan just showed us that they are brothers but in a way that you dont notice because the next scene we see the other brother very calm talking to hes twin that it is over. but i never noticed the first time that the other brother just can not take it. and he goes watching the show again and thats the time when they get him. than in prison we see the scene where he says sorry to hes twin brother because he watched the show again and made a mistake.
3. i noticed even more stuff. one thing is also that i now thing that cutter knew from the beginning that they are twins i dont know. its just the way he talks in the beginning of the movie.

its that kind of movie that you can talk about hours and hours. and i really hope that nolan will not explain the movie on the dvd becuase it takes awaythe magic. just leave it like that.

the movie gets now a 10 from me. fantastic job MR Nolan. INWT. in nolan we trust.

p.s. bale and jackman are the bad guys IMO. noone is better than the other.

1. Yeah, but how do you know for a fact that Angiers killed the clone? Because we never do find out how exactly Tesla's machine works. we never know which Angiers ends up where. so either the real Angiers died the first time he cloned himself (if it's the case that the machine sends the real one away) or the real Angiers died the first time they did the trick in front of an audience, drowning in the tank (if the real one stays in place). could be either one. just an example of how genius this movie is.
2. You can definitely separate the brothers when you watch it again. one obsessed with beating Angiers, and the one who survives, the one who loves his wife, the one who insists on ending the rivalry. One food for thought though: whose daughter is the girl?
3. don't remember exactly what he said, but wasn't it in "present time" while the rest of the movie was in flashback?
 
Love this movie, nine outta ten. One thing I found funny is in the end

whait a minute. why would the machine teleport the original angier to another place and make the clone on the original place?
i am not saying that it is not true but its strange.
and yes the movie is genius.

I know who was clone.

When Angier first time checks out Tesla's machine, he finds that it clones him istead of just quick teleport. BUT, as you know the one, who stays in machine (during the public trick, he gets into aquarium under hatch) is clone and the one, who is teleported by machine to the anpther space is a real ANgier. So you'll find that first time (not public trick) Angier's clone (who stayed in center of machine) reached the gun and shot his real himself.

That's very very simple to understand, only if you watch the movie with very good look ;)
 
cinemaman. i think it is nto like that. this machine doesnt teleport you. it just clones you. it clones everything. your body,your clothes and in the end your brains and everyting in the brains. so the clone is actually inside the head the real angier only teh body is a clone. so he is the prestige and at the same time he dies.

at least thats how i understand it.

and why would the machine teleport the clone away? there's not much sense to make here. :p

seriously though, teleporting was what the machine was built for. makes sense, at least to me, if the machine teleported the original, while the clone stayed, kind of like a residual of the original.

thats what it was, it wasn't telepoting hugh jackman, it would clone him, and send the clone somewhere in the arena, then a latch would let loose, and drop him into a vat of water where he would die

from what I remember it doesn't state specifically what the exact effect of the machine is. it's left for the audience to decide wether it does teleport the original Angiers or if it teleports the clone. Angiers himself doesn't know. neither do we.
