The Princess and the Frog

is it me, or is the hype on this movie is no-where as big as it should be?

^There's hype in the animation and film industry, but kids are so used to typical CG movies, they'll have to be brought back into the fold. Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid and Aladdin merch still sell to this day, so it has to find its niche.

It would not surprise me in the least that sometime in the next few weeks this movie gets major publicity on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Seeing as how a lot of people (mainly women) watch that show, it can only be good for publicity and promotion.

Oprah voices Tiana's mother in the movie.

It pains me to say this but after listening to it multiple times Friends On The Other Side is a pretty disappointing villain song. And it sucks because since I heard the first snippets and saw the animation in the previews, this is the song I wanted to hear most of all in the movie.

And it starts out well enough, as the sneak peeks have shown. But at the point where Dr. Facilier sings "I got voodoo, I got hoodoo, I got things I ain't even tried!" it just sort of goes off into an incohesive series of refrains sounding less like the song they started out as and less about the villain and him having "friends on the other side". It becomes more biographical of Naveen & Lawrence. And even when it picks itself back up at the end, it still disappoints.

Villain anthems are usually the catchiest in a Disney movie: Poor Unfortunate Souls, Be Prepared, Gaston, Mine Mine Mine...all are fun and explain the villain's motives to a tee. And with a name like "Friends On The Other Side" establishing his link with, well, demons, I expected alot more.

It's his anthem, but he's basically trying to coerce them. He's a palm reader type, so he's trying to play to their egos.

Yeah but still...

I find my favorite song is now Dig A Little Deeper cuz it sounds like she's singing "Blue skies, sunshine and weed!"

A couple people involved in making the movie performed a parody of "Prince Ali" from Aladdin, "Prince Naveen". They sang it at the wrap party and luckily someone there recorded it on their iPhone and took pictures. It's funny! :hehe:

Try as I might,I just can't excite myself for this film. Ignoring my indignation for the writers changing the characters name from Esmeralda to... Tiana, I still just couldn't do it. Mainly because a swamp is the last setting any fairy tale story should take place. They're dank, dreary, disgusting, and the last setting any imaginative child wants to see when watching a fairy tale.

her name was never esmeralda... it was "Maddy".

and you really haven't been paying attention to the film if you think the swamp is gross.. some swamps can actually be quite beautiful, and i think they captured it well in the film. Stop being closed minded.

It definitely isn't. Disney animated features don't carry the same clout that they used to. That said, I'm sure a princess film around Christmas is going to do very well.

Were also not children anymore... as a kid i was far more hyped for the newest disney films then the adults i was around, and those who were were usually parents who had kids hyping them too..

In the source material it was Emeralda, but I'm guessing that was changed because it's so close to Esmerelda from The Hunch Back film.:whatever: So wht's a good name equivalent to the royal sounding Emeralda? Maddy.... Oh woops that sounds like we barely put effort into it... uh... Tiana. That sounds on the level with Emeralda right?

I've never seen a swamp that made me feel like, "yes, this belongs as the setting for a magical fairy tale." I just haven't. I've even googled plenty upon your notion of there existing beautiful swamps. I'm sorry, they carry an incompatible atmosphere with me, unless it's a horror film, and from the previews I saw this films setting is none different.

I guess it comes down to personal preference but I agree with spideyboy, there are some beautiful swamps, especially near New Orleans. Check it out.

It's no "Be Prepared" that's for sure. But I think it's still pretty good.

for an artist you have a very close minded view of beauty... aspire all you want, but with that point of view, that's all you will be doing is dreaming. This also would not be the first time disney changed the name or added a name to a prince/princess from a fairy tale. The film is also an ADAPTATION. I suggest you learn the meaning.

I'm kind of lost. I'm sensing hostlity here yet I'm not particularly sure where this is coming from.
In any case, you simply see swamps differently than I do. Where you might paint a fantasy, I simply wouldn't. Call it a fault if you wish, we all have them. We all have our own view points, even professional artists.

This also would not be the first time disney changed the name or added a name to a prince/princess from a fairy tale.

The only other official Disney Princess who had her name changed was Jasmine, but if you look at the original and how unappealing that would seem to an English audience, you'd see why.

The film is also an ADAPTATION. I suggest you learn the meaning.

From what I've eperienced of them, names are usually the last thing changed even when an adaption is barely anything like it's source material, see Wanted. Though you still over looked what I said. It's not that they changed the name; I can see they had a possible reason for that, but I do think they half-assed her replacment title. Again, however, you seem to overlook the fact that I've gotten past that.

You didn't watch the Rescuers did you? That's one Disney movie that this reminds me a lot of, especially as that also had a lightning bug as a main character.

Eh, name changes happen all the time. Sleeping Beauty's name wasn't Aurora, or Briar Rose. Disney's just doing what they always do, making it their own. And yes, Disney won't have two star characters with the same name.
Also this movie is based off of two stories, not just one.

Considering that this is a fairytale dealing heavily with frogs, I don't see how a swamp wouldn't feel appropriate.
And if you only see swamps as settings that only work in horror movies, that's honestly a bit sad.

I love the movie.

i don't see how anyone can look at the scene in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (i believe the 2nd) where they visit Tayadama's swamp hut.. and all the lanterns are lit and its just very enchanting.

Just FYI, the movie's getting very good reviews. Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwarzbaum gave it an A rating.

Actually in the Brothers Grimm tale it was Briar Rose, but then you're talking about a character who's had as many different names as Jesus depending on the variation of the tale. Okay not Jesus, but different names.

And yes, Disney won't have two star characters with the same name.

The names aren't the same. Similar. Emeralda and Esmerelda. Not the same. But I already said that might be a decent reason to change it, though I'm not sure why not with a equally as magificent replacement. But anyway, why are you guys still hung up on this when I dismissed this from my complaints anyway?

Also this movie is based off of two stories, not just one.

I've heard that before, but I'm not seeing the similarities to the Brothers Grimm tale. Any case the princess is nameless there, leaving Emeralda as the defalt name to consider adapting if they choose to.

Lakes? Rain Forest?

And if you only see swamps as settings that only work in horror movies, that's honestly a bit sad.

And this is an overreaction.

I'll give you that, but at the same time I found it more omenous and forboding. I can picture it as the source for the villains lair I guess, but only if done right.

Across the board it is getting wonderful reviews, with critics praising the music, the animation, the story and characters! I really can not wait much longer to see this. I wish I could have seen it earlier, but I definitely have my tickets purchased for Friday!
