The problem with schools

The problem is the dictation. People hate to be dictated to.
i completely agree.
i believe that students would be more interested in school if they only felt more involved. and aside from the obvious issused of school funding, lack of teachers, and apathy from the staff that is provided, the students aren't going to learn ANYTHING if they aren't involved in any conversation.

just look at how much we retain from movies!!
beacuse they make us feel involved by invoking emotions.
just taking out your text book, turning to page whatever, and then hearing the teacher say "fill out this worksheet over the section you just read".
what a joke.
or worse!! having a teacher/professor talk your ear off for and hour and a half and you don't get to say anything other than "can i go to the bathroom?". NO ONE likes to be talked at.

No it's not.

Right, because all the kids have their entire lives planned at the age of 14.

All kids need basic educations. They need to know math. (Riddler is right, Algebra is useful. I use concepts from Algebra frequently.) They need to know some history. (It gives you some context when trying to understand the world.) They need to learn to read and write at decently high levels. (Communication is beautiful.)

The problem with schools is that students aren't forced to behave and do what they're told until they're old enough to drop out.

Also, all that testing that seems to be the craze these days. Ugh. :meow:

I don't know about you, but I never use Algebra. I've found that the only mathe everyone needs to know is enough adding and subtracting to handle money. And really, people are much better off when they're self omotivated, I think.

I completely agree with this. I see entirely too many excuses and too much whining in this thread. Not to sound like an old fart, but a big problem is discipline.

9 times out of 10 when a kid says "I'll never need that in life", number one - they don't know what they are talking about, and two - they are just making an excuse.

I think they do know what they're talking about. Only a small number of professions need you to know calculous. A larger number, but still not a majority, need you to know geomoetry and algebra. There aren't any professions I can think of that require you to be able to speak latin besides being a latin teacher.

Kids are too lazy and need to be made to do the work. I agree motivation is a factor, but I think discipline is a high factor too. I know what when I was in school (im only 22) the guys went bananas, including me, and it was often difficult to resist fooling around and concentrate on work.

Kids get away with entirely too much. Sometimes, they practically rule the classroom. Motivation is a factor, but alot of kids simply don't WANT to be motivated.

Of course they're not motivated. They're being forced to learn something that they don't care about and sometimes don't even need. Self motivation is the only motivation that counts for anything, and no one is every going to be self motivated about something they don't care about.

what's wrong with obtaining information that you will never need in life.

85% of all information we take in isnt required in life, whether it be recreational or educational...

does no one wish to be enlightened anymore????

:(

meh

all enlightenment leads to is more questioning!
and who has time for that when there's t.v. to be watched!?!

I'm sure it would be easier to blame your parents than the educational system. If that fails blame society as a whole. In the end you will have to admit, as you already have, YOU dropped out. Now stop whinning, and cleanup the mess in aisle 12.

As for the rest of you who dont think you'll need agebra, get in line behind dropout boy.

For the people who are upset that they will be held accountable for their own actions, like getting a D when they were a Junior. Sorry, get used to the idea, you dont deserve the same things as someone who got straight A's. Guess what they worked harder and deserve to be rewarded for it.

My little sisters friend just got a progress report showing a D in biology because she didnt do what was required for the class.

What was required was for her to buy 10 items on a list of school supplies.

Sometimes things are beyond the students control.

If there are 10 things required for a class, and you only get 9 of them. You failed. It is always in your control.

Very good point. Whatever happened to people simply wanting to better themselves??

You may not need latin, but it sure would be nifty to know it anyway.

actually tends to benefit those who study literature that have developed from it and generally helps people become more billingual when it comes to learning european based languages like, english, french, spanish, italian portugese etc...

and the majority of questions leads to advancements in technology. Technology that allows you to mope around infront of that TV of yours instead of helping to further the cause.

What happened to wanting to learn simply to better yourself? When people say "I don't need to know that", they seem incredibly ignorant to me. There was another thread about swimming on the Hype, and a guy said "I don't need to know how to swim, and I told the teacher that!". You may not NEED to know how to swim (you never know what kind of situation could arise, so it might turn out you do need it), but it's just ****ing NICE to know. Don't you think? It opens up more options. It can improve your life.

"I don't need to know" is whiney and ignorant.

Well, boo hoo. Seriously, don't you think that's just a poor excuse? Maybe teachers could make more of an effort to show kids what a benifet they can have from knowing stuff other than simply getting good jobs.

How was it under her control when her family just lost their home and had no place to live?

I'm sorry I thought this was a discussion based at least a bit, in fact. I didnt realize you wanted to work on your movie of the week. Lets talk about the poor little girl who did A work, but got a D because her hard working family, lost their home through no fault of their own.

Oh, **** you. Thank you for making such a huge assumption on my part, though you know nothing about me. You want to know something, ever since I was a boy I've been told, that I have something "wrong" with me. Ever since I can remember I've been tested, poked and proded, because I guess I wasn't "normal" . Ever since I can remember, I've never done well in school. No matter how hard I tried. But that was never good enough for them, they'd just yell at me more and call me stupid. Not only that, but they felt the need to pull me out of class, and shove me in this tiny small special needs group or whatever the hell it was called, which just alienated me more, from whatever few friends I had in school. It seemed llike almost every week, they'd decide something else was wrong with me and give me a new label. Eventually the doctors just started shoving medication down my throat. If it didn't help, they'd just give me different ones. Constantly for years, they'd just shove pills down my throat instead of trying to help me. Do you know how it feels to be constantly told you have something wrong with you? even my parents did. They still do.

So yes, I do sometimes blame the educational system, my parents, and even society as a whole. I feel like they could be doing a better job then they're doing. And yes, I realize the chances of me getting a good job is slim. But at this point, I don't care. I'm not the type who's going to spend years in school just so I can work long hours at some job I hate just so I can get a big paycheck. So don't judge me ****head.

Nope, its all fact. Not everyone grew up with a perfect family and this is where the school system fails them. And I didnt say her mother lost their home(trailer) to no fault of her own. She got an 89 on the test, which was the only other thing graded at the time.
It was amended because I bought Kateland her grades and then yelled at the teacher for being a silverspooned *****.

Wow, your my hero.
Shes still a lazy, stupid. loser. But your my hero.

the problem with schools is that much like most things, people are spending more effort apearing to be doing well than actually doing well. people don't seem to like people effortlessly doing well either. so they make it more of an effort. for me making things take more effort involves boring me to a point of torture. now fair enough other people wouldn't be able to keep up but does that mean i had to go at a pace that was far too slow for me. they might aswell have kept me in a room with permanently drying paint and said hey look at this for years on end. the problem with schools they treat everyone as if they are average. if you're not you're ****ed.

She is 15.
And you, Pyro, are obviously just as oblivious as the teacher.

I don't feel like making an educated comment on this issue so I'll just sum what I'd like to say, in a couple of words

**** school.

I think the problem with schools is the students. Just like my generation and the one before that and the one before that they think that they know absolutely everything. Add to that all the bull**** corporate advertising that's invaded public schools. all the ridiculous pop culture bull**** that kids have to accept in order for them to be socially accepted and you end up with what we have now, a bunch of post-pubecent ******s walking around with no aim other than to own the newest, coolest cellphone, pair of jeans, etc.

I hate kids.

You know what's the problem with education?
