The problem with schools

Actually, I think it's the opposite. Now everyone thinks only for themselves, don't do what they are told to and question every decision.

You know what's the problem with education?

Scantrons and what they represent: Easy testing with multiple choice answers. Hello, corporate America, here are the future of your company. Braindead individuals that do not think for themselves, do what they are told to do and do not question your decisions.

Scantrons rule. **** your essay tests.

As for the rest of you who dont think you'll need agebra, get in line behind dropout boy.

How many professons are there that actually require you to know algebra?

What happened to wanting to learn simply to better yourself? When people say "I don't need to know that", they seem incredibly ignorant to me. There was another thread about swimming on the Hype, and a guy said "I don't need to know how to swim, and I told the teacher that!". You may not NEED to know how to swim (you never know what kind of situation could arise, so it might turn out you do need it), but it's just ****ing NICE to know. Don't you think? It opens up more options. It can improve your life.

What if they don't feel like learning it? Learning something to better yourself is fine, but you shouldn't force people to. Someone can live a happy, fulfilling, succesful life without ever having heard of algebra.

"I don't need to know" is whiney and ignorant.

"I'm going to force you to learn something you probably won't need to learn just so you can better yourself" is preachy and ignorant.

Well, boo hoo. Seriously, don't you think that's just a poor excuse? Maybe teachers could make more of an effort to show kids what a benifet they can have from knowing stuff other than simply getting good jobs.

It's not a poor excuse. If you're not interested in Algebra and aren't planning on going into any feilds where Algebra is necessairy, you're going to be a terrible algebra student. The best kind of motivation is self motivation.

and the majority of questions leads to advancements in technology. Technology that allows you to mope around infront of that TV of yours instead of helping to further the cause.

:o
"We met in a chatroom, now our love can fully bloom... Sure the world wide web is great, but you, you make me salivate... I love technology, but not as much as you, you see... But I STILL love technology... Always and forever."

you're right.
technology DOES serve it's purpose!!

You don't learn; you memorize.

Then after you regurgitate it; you forget it.

Everything depends solely on tests.

the stuff you learn in school such as algebra, calculus, trigonometry, geometry, history, geography, science, social sciences....etcetera
all these stuff may seem useless like the stuff that you actually learn may seem really useless and you might never actually come across it in life again but these activities or syllabusses or curriculums were developed for our minds to think.
Stuff like geometry... we might never use it again but the crazy questions that we might do... like proving that the angle from a tangent to a chord is equal to angle in alternate segment... that kind of stuff actually gets our minds working. And alot of these questions need a bit of imagination/inspiration to work out.
I live in Australia so the education system is alot different to the American so when we choose maths... we have a choice of picking general, 2 unit, extension one or extension 2; extension 2 being the hardest. Many of the stuff learnt in these different levels (apart from general maths cause thats just the basics needed to survive) isnt really needed but what it does is to get us to think and to excercise our minds. They also give us an indication of our own level, and the feeling of self accomplishment when we've finally solved some crazy ass equation.
So saying stuff like "algebra is useless" is absolute rubbish cos it might not be needed but the way that it trains our brains to think and process information is very valuable and will most likely help us in the real world. So if algebra is considered useless, then maybe doing jigsaw puzzles in preschool schould be considered useless as well cos we will never play around with jigsaw puzzles in our life again but what the jigsaw puzzle does is trains our brains to think and put things together same as what geometry basically is but not as practical.
But then really depends on the person as well, like if they dont want to learn then there isnt really any point in forcing them, but then it usually comes down to the educator as well, if they're actually allowing the student to learn in the best possible way.
So alot of the stuff thats done in school isnt really useless cos its basically a crucial stepping stone to the adult world.

Hey Seb that pic is kinda rude, not sure if thats allowed here y know.
