I appreciate Motown. Some excellent tunes from Detroit. But if I had to choose, I'm a homer.

I am a HUGE fan of R&B. As a kid I used to sing all big songs in the car like I was apart of the groups. Boyz II Men and Jodeci were my favorites, and when 112 came along they blew me away like no other. When I graduated high school back in 03 I started to get into some of the old school in addition to what I grew up with. Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Jackie Wilson are now on my palette. R&B reached such a big rise of talent in the 90s, but the industry somewhat killed itin terms of what is mainstream. The 90s was so many good singers at the same time, and the only downfall was that the shelf life of an artist has dwindled as time went on. I think if you took many acts from the 90s(En Vogue, 112, Dru Hill, Boyz II Men, Brownstone, Toni Braxton, etc.) they would have had long term success like some of the old Motown acts. The thing that got lost IMO after the 90s was raw talent. Some of the people I named just couldn't be made. You couldn't just get 3 girls together, and expect them to be good like SWV. You had to find the talent, but they forgot how to do that. Record companies got so cocky about making stars that they don't even try to "find" talent anymore. It's like they just get some relatives or friends, and they just manufacture them. As I say with Hip Hop though, thank God for the underground. There is really no underground R&B movement, but there are some serious indy artists that are great by any standard. I wanna show them a little love here if ya don't mind.

Y'all have to check out Maxwell's upcoming album Black Summer's Night. It's the first in a trilogy, and I've been listening to an advance copy. It is freaking excellent! Maxwell really stakes his claim to being the best male vocalist out today. Of course I've got about 5 or 6 guys right along there with him, but he really know how to do his thing. Here's the second best song on the album IMO.

Yeah that last Raphael Saadiq album is pretty damn good. Well I'm on another music kick. Since Michael Jackson died yesterday I've been listening to alot of his music, and that led to me going on a huge music binge. I normally listen to a ton of music anyway, but these past 24 hours have had me almost breathing music. lol Here are some good ones I want to share with y'all.

I thought this was interesting, because you get a chance to hear two great singing groups back to back. 112 is the end all be all in music for me, so I like their version better. however Silk's version is amazing as well.

Old School R&B >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> today's R&B

I miss the way they used to make their music videos back in the 90s.

Here's a favorite song of mine from back in the 80s.

Yes the album is out now. It came out around 3 weeks ago. It is his best album if you ask me. It's worth a buy, but it's pretty short. It's only 9 songs long, so you've gotta consider that before buying.

LOVED that one.

I've been listening to this song alot the past month. Smokey is a bad man!

And this is my latest theme song. Marvin Gaye is my homeboy.

Sam Cooke is the man. It's crazy how influential he was.

Got a new guy to hype. I've been listening to Sirius alot lately, and they've been playing two songs by this guy named K'Jon. At first I almost skipped channels because K'Jon sounds like alot of guys that are mediocre in the game now, but then I heard him singing. He sounds a little like Lyfe Jennings, but what really caught me was that his song actually used things that most R&B doesn't use nowadays like horns and violins. His singles have been stuck in my head this past week, and I just found out that his album debuted at number one on the R&B charts. I'm definitely feeling some new blood that know how to represent instead of looking for a paycheck. I'll go get his album and review it here later this week. Here's his second single called "This Time" for a sample.
