Wassup Hype Members! Welcome to the long-awaited SHH Delta Quadrant (also affectionately known as The Delta Quadrant)--a thread where peeps can discuss American Minority Culture. I'm yer host Lightning Strykez.

Now, before some of you guys raise yer "That's Racist!" shields, let's clarify a few things right off the bat: This thread is for everybody--no matter what color they are. While the purpose of this round-table discussion is to address matters pertinent to African Americans, Latinos and other minorities, it is also designed to tackle subjects that appeal to all Hype peoples. TRANSLATION: If you listen to Hip Hop or R&B Music, have fond memories of black TV comedies i.e. The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air or have an opinion on whether Barak Obama should run for U.S. president, you have a right to be here--color be damned.

As many of you know, this thread is actually a spin-off of what Honey Vibe started here: http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264740 Let's keep the conversation civil, balanced and educational. This thread is not to here to DIVIDE us, but rather to enlighten eachother on the differences among us!

Caliph

Hip-Hop? Screw that. Let's talk about Bad Brains and Living Colour.

I'll get the ball rolling from a lighter level first with this question:

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air

Vs.

The Cosby Show

Which sitcom did more for you and why? Any favorite episodes?

Also, I thought this thread had something to do with Star Trek. :(

For me it was the Cosby Show. I remember my dad sitting me down and making me watch the episode where Theo wants to move out so when he comes home the family has turned the house into and apartment building. I remember Rudy being the landlord, Cliff was the handyman etc... My Dad used that as an illustration of why I should stay in school.

Fresh Prince. The Cosby's were too perfect. Will was much more relatable, plus Uncle Phil is quite possibly the greatest TV dad ever. Besides, nothing beats Carlton's Tom Jones dance.

One thing I'd like to bring up is, has anyone else noticed that it is still looked down upon to date outside your race? Anytime the topic crops up, it seems to me that alot of people that claim they are not racist, say they would not date outside of their own race.

I think some people are just not attracted to those outside their race. I just think it is a personal, sexual, preference, not a matter of racism.

Dude, I  you for your passion on this subject. We've discussed this in the past...

And yeah, it's still taboo. It's interesting: My dad is German and my mom is Egyptian and black so I'm used to exposure to both sides of the equation (hell, our family reunions look like UN summits LOL). Yet, for all intents and purposes, I am considered black--the blonde hair and blue-eyed genes in my bloodline are totally ignored. So if I date a white girl (which I have done in the past) black women still accuse me of selling out. And I'm like..."but I'm half white goddamnit!"

They don't see my point though. All they see is neegra. :csad:

Oh man, thats ridiculous. I saw a clip before, it was only a bunch of actors, but I guess its a scenario that crops up every now and then in black culture, where this black guy was dating a white girl, and these black girls were just *****ing about them both behind his back. But he came back at them with the greatest retorts. Wish I could find that clip.

But yeah, people like that are idiots.

Minority Culture? I only see Black in the first post. I already feel segregated. :down

And how dare we list great black sitcoms and not include....

Imma bout to get angry! :cmad:

I grew up with my grandparents and they come from a different time and they consider it 'unnatural'. or 'they should stick to their own'. I find black guys attractive but i doubt they would even consider a skinny white girl like me. I think more understanding is needed especially where i come from. I live in surburbia and there isn't a black community unless i go into the city.

Cosby improved the image of blacks on television back in the 80's.

But Fresh Prince was much more fun to watch. Carlton dancing is quite possibly the funniest dance in tv history. Right up there with Elaine from Seinfeld.
