A South African doctor has developed a new female condom that she hopes will combat rape in the most painful way possible.

Dr. Sonnet Ehlers has invented Rape-axe, a female device with jagged hooks that latch onto a man's penis during penetration.

The doctor is distributing 30,000 of these condoms in South Africa during this year's World Cup.

"It hurts," Ehlers told CNN. "He cannot pee and walk when it's on. If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter."

South Africa has one of the highest rape rates in the world, according to Human Rights Watch. It is also believed that 16 percent of the population is living with HIV.

Rape-axe is inserted like a tampon and when embedded to a man the device can only be removed by a doctor.

Some have accused Ehler of creating nothing more than a new-age chastity belt.

"It not only presents the victim with a false sense of security, but psychological trauma," said Victoria Kajja, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Uganda.

But Ehlers said that she had taken the proper research and development steps before launching the product.

"I consulted engineers, gynecologists and psychologists to help in the design and make sure it was safe," she said.

Ehlers also pointed out how women take extreme measures such as placing razor blades in their nether regions to prevent rape in South Africa.

"I believe something's got to be done," she said. "This will make some men rethink before they assault a woman."

If your rape deterrent device requires someone to force their penis into someone else's vagina to be effective, IT DOES NOT FUNCTION AS A RAPE DETERRENT.

It might function as a deterrent if it spreads the fear of it possibly being present.

Still, I hear your point.

This is a great idea, regardless of whether it is a deterrent or not. It will help prevent the spread of STD's in cases of rape and prevent the attacker harming the victim beyond the initial thrust. This will save lives, Honestly, I think the criticism mostly comes from men who are squeamish about the idea teeth digging into any penis, even if it's not theirs.

What a nasty surprise it would be for a man if the woman forgot it was in before consensual sex or foreplay..

Bad idea, they go to rape a woman, they get that stuck on their dick forever, they would just beat the woman to death.....

Better than putting razor blades up there i suppose

It's designed to immobilize it's wearer, so they can't stand up. Let alone beat a woman to death.

Wonder if the incidence of sodomy-type rapes will now increase now that all the rapists have been alerted to the potential vaginal danger this doctor has just broadcast to them all. Hope she invents an anal version.

Very much doubt it, pain will cause massive surge of adrenaline and put the guy its on into a rage

The biggest problem with this condom is that it doesn't work with virgins. I think they should just give out AK-47s to women & girls so they can protect themselves.

Anything that puts a hurting on scum is fine by me. Great idea too, I hope whoever came up with it makes a mint.

I dunno. If I had a row of hooks in my junk, the last thing I'm going to be thinking of is beating someone up.

That was actually the first thing I thought of. If I consensually hooked up with a chick who forgot she had this on, and my package got destroyed, I'd be pretty mad. That would be my one problem with this.

And I thought reaching up there and feeling a Nuva Ring was a *****-killer..

You have to be a woman because no man would ever think that. If you can't pee or walk with this thing, there's not enough adrenaline in the world to get you to beat a woman with this thing on.

I'd say it would be kinda hard to forget you have a vagina full of hooks.

So what if your wife or girlfriend forgets to take it off? I like the premise but there is a drawback.

i highly doubt they'd forget something like that. even still, it'd also be the usband/boyfriends duty to remember to ask as well.

all else fails, they could just get a tattoo that says "enter at your own risk"

I can see a woman using this against a cheating boyfriend.

and I believe this device belongs in the dark ages.

but I hope it does deter rape to some extent.

heh, yeah i think i can see this being misused...

and I believe this device belongs in the dark ages.

unfortunately, the crime of rape is such an astronomically severe problem, i think its entirely permissible to use such methods. I just wish there was something a little more preemptive they could use.

Isn't rape penetration without consent. So if the guy still has to penetrate the girl in order for this thing to work, isn't it still rape? So how is this a deterrent?

rape is ANY sexual act (or attempt thereof) without consent, not just penetration. but yeah, totally get your point.

Rape is about power and dominance, not sex. That's simply a means to an end.

That kind of adrenaline would go more towards screaming and flailing than anything else, unless you're being assaulted by Bruce Banner.

we're not talking about the psychology of the rapist.

and don't trivialize rape to say the sex is "simply" a means to an end. I highly doubt the victims would agree.
