The Resident Evil Thread - Part 3

Yes. What contributes to the survival-horror aspect of RE is the sense that you can't go backwards, there's only one way out. An open world kills that.

The mansion was pretty open. Id like something like that again. Give us a big compound to explore.

Well..... Better late than never. /Ghostbusters II Dock Worker.

So I've finally gotten around to starting RE6.

My thoughts so far:

1) When did Chris become such a jerk?

2) It isn't as bad as everyone says, but it does have some serious interface problems. The inventory management system is terrible. I have died quite a few times just trying to switch weapons or move herbs into my container so I can actually use them.

3) Jill, Chris's best friend and possible lover, "dying," is no biggie for Chris....Some random schmucks die and he goes full on PTSD?

4) What is the point of even having guns when melee attacks are infinitely more effective?

Luckily I'm only in Chris chapter 2 and I am told that the Chris chapters are the worst (and I'm not even entirely hating them). It is easily the worst of the series, but so far it is enjoyable. I could see how a reboot could help though. Not a full on reboot....just something a bit more....isolated from the convoluted plot that gets back to the roots of the series.

That being said, I don't want open world. I find it odd that so many people do. Everyone complains that this series has gotten too far from its roots, but you want open world? The best part of the early Resident Evil games was the claustrophobia and terror involved. Open world takes a lot of that away. Like Pat, I want something large, with freedom to move around....but I don't want an open world Resident Evil game.

I've said it before and I will say it again....best place to take this series is backwards. Do a prequel. Resident Evil 1945....Set it in Nazi Germany during WWII, around the time that Spencer, Marcus and Ashford are initially experimenting with the T-Virus. Play into the mythos of the Nazis allowing their scientists to do brutal experiments on the Jewish people. It is the perfect setting for the founders of Umbrella to begin their research. You could play as an Allied soldier who gets separated from his unit and stumbles into Spencer/Ashford/Marcus's experiments.

Plus think of how atmospheric it could be....dark stormy trench filled battle fields, surrounded by corpses, never sure if they will rise as zombies. There could be old German castles....concentration camps. Let's get back to the roots of the series. The atmosphere alone sounds terrifying. Add in some early T-virus monstrosities and you have the making of a terrifying survival horror game. That is where I want the series to go.

I want them to keep co-op though. I'd love something that just takes it back to it's roots, with two normal people (maybe one of them's even a cop, Leon Kennedy style) caught up on Day one of the outbreak. Have them escape the city, then have a classic mansion etc. But they need to take a page out of the Dead Space book, discarding large, overblown melodrama and weird fight scenes with tightly planned and designed scares and fantastically horrific atmosphere. That and a good story wouldn't hurt either.

In fact, I remember Cliffy B offering to 'fix' the RE franchise a while back... I honestly wouldn't mind seeing Capcom do what they did with DmC and let another developer have a crack... Not like Operation Racoon city mind you but a proper effort at a reboot of sorts.

I think if they are going to continue with co-op it should be optional (like Dead Space 3). I feel like having a partner does, to an extent, reduce the level of fear. It is like adding a safety net. I'd prefer it be optional.

Yeah, I agree. I think the way Dead Space 3 is doing it is the perfect approach.

More thoughts:

1) Zombies with guns....sounds great in theory....TERRIBLE in practice. Basically makes the game a poor man's COD.

2) Playing as Matt Damon....I mean Piers is far better than playing as Chris. Much better weaponry. The sniper-type character is far more useful.

Dude. Resident Evil mixed with Wolfensteinesque Nazi occultism and scientific experimentation is an awesome idea.

It sounds too good. So you know it will never happen.

This IS terrifying. :csad::word:

They should make 2 main characters. One is alone and the other has a partner.
For example Chris is alone, like in the first Resident Evil, and Jill is with Barry in Co op gameplay.

That is a cool idea. But having concentration camps and Holocaust victims is probably too taboo for a video game, so they'd probably have to make it POW camps instead. The T-Virus could be the Nazi Super Soldier program gone wrong :awesome:

So the name Ada Wong means nothing to Chris? Isn't that a bit odd?

A little bit of the taboo is exactly what this series needs. It needs stuff that really just sends chills down someone's spine. That being said, you're probably right that Capcom would never do it. This is the company that added Asian zombies into the middle of Africa to show that they weren't discriminating by having African enemies in a game set entirely in Africa. :funny:

That's not a little bit of taboo though. Their controversy with RE5 is more of a reason they wouldn't do anything with concentration camps or have Jews be experiment victims.

They should just tell people to ****. Your game takes place in Africa, you kill black people. I don't understand why there even was a controversy.

that couldnt work as a prequel to the series as the timeline is off. The virus wasnt discovered till the late 60s. Spencer was like 14 years old in 1945. Something like that could work in a reboot which can make up its own backstory but I dont think Nazi Germany would work as an origins to the current series' continuity

On a personal sidenote, I hate WWII settings in game and would hate to see a RE around that time

Meh, it is Resident Evil. They've changed the chronology and retconned more than a soap opera. They can do it again.

Changing the entire origins of the series is pretty drastic. Thats not merely a minor retcon. Why do that when it can just be worked into a reboot and not be an issue?

Hate WWII setting? I can understand a few years ago being sick of WWII fps.. But the setting as a whole?

Boo-ums to you, sir.

Yep. Its the absolute worst. If a game is set around WWII then Im automatically not interested

I only hate it for FPS games. Can't bother to care. But for a RE game, it could be pretty cool. As long as you don't fight living Nazis that try to shoot you.

They should just tell people to ****. Your game takes place in Africa, you kill black people. I don't understand why there even was a controversy.
Being of African parent's my self it's cause when they were growing up and they faced racist slurs towards them, they were also told their from a country full of disease and virus's and all those things came from there origin wise as well as them and that was used an even further excuse to be hated by skin heads and the like when they tried to beat them up or the usual racist crap.

That's the reason, and seeing that there are still people ( of the black race from africa) still a live from the 60's and before that, that are my parents age it makes sense why. Maybe not to you, but it's a sensitive issue. Remember the apartide crap only ended in south africa when the 2000's came about. if people still have issue with the "Holocaust," it makes sense that for people from Africa that they'd have that for an issue where that was used as part of the center of hatred for their own country. it was like when people were using that when SAR's was around and said it was mostly Asian thing. And you should remember Asians took offense to that for good reason as well. It would been an excuse for race riot's against them, if they (along with others that knew better) didn't speak up. It's soar spot of the worst kind. And it also depend on the Execution of how it's done in medium of movies and in this case games.
