The RPG Concept Thread

If the Lost RPG starts from the beginning I'm in.

Also, a create-your-own-survivor option? I don't watch Lost but I like the concept.

If I recall the conversations I had with Sensei via MSN, then, yes, a Create-A-Survivor option will be available. I think we'll have two separate applications. One for pre-existing characters, the other for user-created characters.

Right now, however, I think that there ought to be a one-character limit. Especially since, at the very beginning of the story of these characters, there won't be any stereotypical or archetypal villains per se.

That's 7 people now. So how about that LOST Application thread? :woot:

I'll talk it over with Sensei, and we'll get things moving. :brucebat:

I don't think a Lost game could survive without being able to create survivors. Would free players from being limited to those shown, and give them a chance to stretch their creativity and create characters and backstories as complexe as the established characters.

Oh yes they most definitely should be allowed to create their own survivor. I was just pointing out that there are a bunch of unknown, unnamed extras on the island that could be used if anyone felt so inclined.

Would you be able to alter a character's history?

Yes, it'd be allowed, within reason. As long the change doesn't completely turn said character upside down, I think it's reasonable to allow people to alter a thing or two, opening the door to interesting flashbacks.

But if someone picked up, say, Sayid and made it so that he was never a soldier, or picked up Kate and made it so that she never killed, (Must..not spoil...things for MM), well then that's taking something that MAKES these characters who they are. And that' just not cool.

Here are two things about how the game will be played, different from most of the other RPGs, that I think will help it survive.

  • From the first word of the first post on the first page, players will be thrown together. They'll be interacting from day one. And while they may, and will, split up into teams later, they're almost guaranteed to never have a solo arc going (unless they so choose). This prevents people from getting bored, as happens when games are starting out, and people get lost in their solo arcs and origin stories.

  • While the island and it's mysteries are for you, the player, to discover, Matt Murdock and I will have complete oversight. We will have the island and it's secrets planned out (Effectively rewriting it). So, while the players themselves won't really have the option to write in the monster, the Others, or what have you, MM and I will follow each of the player's storylines closely and, once in a while, make GM posts in the IC thread where something big happens. So, say your character enters the forest with a group of people, MM and I might very well throw something at you that you'll have to think on your feet to get out of.

I think this, especially the second part, will keep the game action-packed and will never allow it a dull moment. MM and I will make sure that something is always going on, and we'll try to always keep players on their toes.

Alright, this sounds awesome. You or MM should start up the Application thread pronto ;)

Ferrets don't live in caves. We live in burrows, cages, or incredibly opulent palaces.

Holy crap.

I can't believe I never thought of it before.

I just thought of what what very well may be the perfect setting for an RPG....

It would either be massive win  or epic fail. :down

The one problem is it would miss out on the dry wit of the narrator. Unless everyone wrote as the narrator in their posts (no first person allowed).

I was thinking of designating the GM to act as the narrator. And instead of trying to float it for multiple seasons, it'd be more of a one-shot thing, with a small group of at-least-semi-dedicated players. Basically, an exercize in group smartassery.
