The Running Man

Forget finding an actor to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger, who could fill Richard Dawson's shoes?!

The fat guy from Home Improvement? John O'Hurley?! I don't think so.

Has anyone here read the book? It's actually good, and would make for one hell of a fantastic, dark film. It actually takes the "good concept" that was barely even in the garbage movie and makes a story around it. It's much more the dark, noir thriller than some action cheese fest. And that ending... woo, on second thought, maybe not. No one would have the balls to make it. let alone release it.

Kind of like Wanted? They took away everything that made the comic book series interesting and turned it into a Matrix ripoff.

Yeah, that's another prime example.

In the Running Man, the reason Richards enters the game is because he is poor, out of work, ashamed with something to prove, and most importantly, his little girl is dying and NEEDS that money. The game lasts for a month or two and the arena is the whole world(or at least the United States, I can't remember). He runs, and hitmen we never see are out after him. This gives us time to see the complete ****hole of what the world has become, some nice tense near misses, an insane screening process to get to be on the show, as well as a whole bunch of other games breifly seen or touched upon. And the end, well, it's brutal. And awesome.

Sounds interesting. I wish I was into reading books...lol.

Well it's a really short book if I remember correctly, hovering around 200 pages or so with relatively large print.

If books just don't do it for you, the Rockstar game(makers of Grand Theft Auto) Manhunt has a premise and atmosphere far closer to The Running Man than that of the actual movie.

Yeah, if they did decide to revisit the concept they should go with a storyline close to the book. The Arnold cheesefest was and is perfect because it's so cheesy and '80s inspired, leave that alone. I think a real adaptation of the book would work really well in today's world, get a smaller actor for Ben Richards though, not some Arnold type, someone who seems more everyman in appearance. Though they've gotta show a clip of "Climbing for Dollars" from the original movie, that was hilarious.
