The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Sarah Gadon in TASM2 Discussion Thread

Yup. We may not know the full story as to what actually happened, but for a cynic like me, there's no way the events that have transpired these past 2 days are coincidental. There's too much beating around the bush with this franchise.

I don't see what the big deal is.. Shailene worked what, about 3 days on set? Plus rumors of shooting 3 and 4 back to back.

More like 2-3 weeks. Again, it's fairly humiliating experience for a young actress like Shailene if this is all true. It doesn't who you are.

The upside? What happens if she gets cast as the lead in 'Star Wars'. That would be the ultimate 'FU' to Sony and Mr. Webb.

While there's no official word, my cynical side tells me that Gadon's casting is very suspect, trailing right behind Woodley's cut and have an addition this late. It's very strange.

Let's say if she is Mary Jane, I think it'll now be a glorified cameo at the end instead of an active role.

I don't want to be cynical about the situation. If you really look at it, it sounds as if Marc Webb made a creative decision to take out MJ in this film when the decision was made to split the third film into two films (essentially a two parter).

Because of that and the fact that Woodley's schedule is about to get really, really busy because of the Divergent series, the decision was made to let her go of her contract and look to recast the part because they knew that Woodley's schedule would not be able to accommodate Sony's needs.

This is kind of the only way Sony looks good in this situation. I mean, Woodley kind of acknowledges in her statement that the plot of the film didn't seem to have room for her character so they cut her.

I just don't know...

That's what I will believe until I get proof otherwise. Either way it's a very interesting shake-up.

How so? Arguably, there's less evidence to prove that she's a better fit and better actress for this role than Shailene. Otherwise, this just further proves the pit of shallowness that exists here.

As an actress there is less evidence yes. But a vital part of the role of MJ is looks, and while I by no means ask that she'd be super model-level, I do want that she is at least cute to be acceptable. From all of the pics that we got of Shailene as MJ (no I don't mean the photos without make up, I mean the ones that were taken during a shooting of a scene) I just didn't think she was cute. Which does make me scratch my head since I have countless times seen videos and pics where Shailene is actually really hot, and somehow they managed to botch that up in this movie

I really want the comicbook MJ, not literally what she looks like in the comics, but her character. And for me to be able to take her character seriously she has to be somewhat cute. again, not a super model/porn star, just cute is fine enough

She signed up for a cameo in 2 and a full on part in 3, when it was a trilogy. Sony and Webb changed all of that when they decided to make it a quadrilogy.

Mary Jane is no longer in TASM2; if Gadon's casting proves true, it is for TASM3 and probably 4 and is being done now so that they know the role is locked in. These negotiations with Gadon could also possibly be 'in principle'.

I think you missed Marc Webb's statement about cutting MJ's scenes and wanting to streamline the story and focus on the Peter/Gwen relationship. Why would he add Liz Allen instead? That would kinda defeat the purpose of what he's trying to do

Sarah reminds me a little of Mary Winstead who was my choice to play MJ.

So assuming she is MJ, I'm very happy.

it would indeed make webb look like a liar if they recast for this film, unless they are doing 2 and 3 back to back but then sony would have no reason to set the date for 2016 for the 3rd film, while the momentum is high they could easy release it 2015

I wonder if we here at superherohype helped Webb & Co. make this decision.

Many of us had issues with Shailene and gave, what I believe to be very good reasons as to why she was a poor fit. Seems very possible that Webb & Co. agree with those concerns.

Even the internet buzz against her did play a part, you shouldn't feel all good about it and ****. The girl was cast first and probably was into giving it her all regarding the MJ role. It's not like we got rid of somebody that was an ass.

TASM2 is out 3 weeks before Xmen Days of future

its part of the process, there is always going to be competition

its popular believe that the reason iron man 3 is doing so well is because its high on Momentum from the success of the avengers, and i ain't even sure its been a year since the avengers was out

Webb and Sony wouldn't be that stupid, she was cast for a reason, infact one of the first cast for ASM2, she obviously had an impact on them and overall when you look at the buzz she gets from critics in other films she has done then well this film won't probably be a big loss to her career
