The Score of The Batman

Drake's a pipe dream. Besides he hasn't scored any major blockbusters? I believe Giacchino is a lock for the same reasons mclay18 does. Though I'm curious how TPTB at Marvel will react to their new golden boy scoring DC's most popular property if hired.

Chris Drake would be great but its not a realistic choice.

Giacchino came up with this, probably my favorite piece of his. Think he'd bring that fantastical element I've been yearning for since the Burton/Elfman days. Plus his work on Lost, golden.

I don't think WB batted an eye when Zimmer signed on for TASM2. There's no non-compete clause for composers, and as long as the gigs don't overlap composers can go from DC to Marvel and back again.

Giacchino has three $1B films and several in the $500M-$800M range under his belt. WB is going to let Reeves bring Giacchino on.

I think Giacchino is a great composer for the most part but I don't know if he'd necessarily be right for Batman, especially this Batman which already has an established soundscape from Zimmer and his (many) collaborators. I'm curious to hear it if he does end up doing it. He's one of the best working in the business.

How about bringing Danny Elfman back? Batman and Batman Returns were pretty awesome and the Spider-Man movies theme was good too.

I would **** my pants if that happened but no way.

Thanks for sharing.

Roar gives me the same vibe I get from Lost and Dawn of Apes, so I suppose his work is pretty consistent. I could see him scoring something like King Kong.

I hope he collaborates with JunkieX because I loved his "beautiful lie" and the tender stuff, but Giacchino can add more weight to the BWAH x 5 theme and make Bat's theme more muscular.

Would love to hear his take on Penguin, or Hugo Strange, his style really suits the weird/fantastical world, base on the one track I've heard =P

PS I love David Russo's work on Gotham too, the themes for Penguin, Riddler and Galavan were great :ilv:

I think considering that Reeves and Giacchino are coming onto an established franchise, I would not be surprised if Giacchino quotes Zimmer and Holkenborg's thematic material in the score.

He's done it before with other big sequels.

Giacchino is usually a stickler for paying homage to who came before him. He referenced other composers' thematic material in the ST trilogy, Rogue One, two MI films and Jurassic World. However, he did not reference any of Patrick Doyle's material in Dawn of the Apes -- which was directed by Reeves.

I see. I'm not familiar with the guy, but I'll look him up.

My ultimate never-gonna-happen choice would be Clint Mansell. There are only few modern film composers that come close to Mansell's genius. Zimmers, Horners and Wlliamses are not worthy to kiss his almighty ass.

I'd like to suggest Mark Korven, the composer for The Witch.

Giacchino's score for Let Me In is very dark and atmospheric. His score for The Batman would likely be a fusion of that with Jupiter Ascending and Doctor Strange.

Christopher Drake. The score for Arkham Origins is the best Batman score i have ever heard.

Except for DOTPOTA, but I doubt he'd use Junkie's/Zimmer's so called Batman theme. Even Steven Price avoided adapting it for Batman's brief appearances in Suicide Squad.

I'd love for the soundtrack to be a mix of 'Do you bleed?' from BvS and the B:TAS themes. BvS has an amazing soundtrack and to combine it with what many of us instinctively associate as being the core Batman would be truly spectacular.

I am not the world's biggest Giacchino fan, as I find him to be hit and miss, although undeniably talented. I would be curious to see what his approach with Batman would be though.

Unrelated, but I haven't seen the Batman: Telltell score get enough love but I thought it was very good and a nice organic blend of Elfman, Zimmer, Walker, etc. I'm torn between this theme and the Arkham theme. The Arkham theme is more bombastic and operatic, but the Telltale theme has that more of that dark heroic/hopeful vibe.

While I'm usually a proponent of having musical consistency between films, I'm not sure how well the Junkie/Zimmer BvS theme will work going forward. Not because I think it's a bad theme, I think it's actually a pretty decent Batman theme- but it very specifically captures the extra dark, extra brooding, extra violent version of Batman to me. It's almost like Batman's Imperial March, since he's kind of the villain of BvS.

If they go more in a horror influenced direction for the solo film, then I can see it working. But if they are going more in the "Rebirth" direction and are going to try and go with the 'hope' angle for DC going forward, then I feel like a composer like Giacchino would have to build a new theme. Maybe the Junkie one could be referenced here and there, but I think a new central theme would be necessary.

That's probably the most likely scenario. Giacchino will probably use stylistic influences from the previous composers, likely Elfman and Zimmer, to shape his score for the film.

Junkie XL would be my first choice. I think he'll probably get the job too.

I have to see how Junkie goes with JL first.

Even though it had some good moments, Junkie's Batman theme is one of my least favorites, if not the very least. The slow repetitive notes completely put me off. It just seems to go nowhere. I'd totally go with Giacchino for this one. He has a lot of range and can express dark themes very well.

The Junkie theme isn't bad, but to me it's like the seed of a potentially good theme. It doesn't get developed nearly enough and ends up feeling repetitive and a bit tiresome. There are so many places you could go with it though. I have no doubt Giacchino or a composer of his ilk could really riff on that idea and take it to the next level.

I'm a massive Zimmer fan and love his TDKT and MoS scores, but I think a musical adjustment would go a long way in helping give the DCEU the facelift they're looking for. And unfortunately Junkie is really just a continuation of that sound.

I think Zimmer has the right idea stepping away from superhero films for the time being. Not only is he probably tired of doing superhero movies, but I'm afraid superhero movies may be starting to tire of his sound too. And again, I'm not a Zimmer hater at all. I adore the TDKT scores and think his Superman theme is great. But I think these movies need to cut the cord once and for all and stop trying to be a continuation of the Nolan tone.

Nah, I'm pretty confident that it'll be Giancchio. Matt Reeves always works with him.

The big questions, imo at least, are if Giancchio will use Junkie XL's leitmotif for Batman in his score and whether or not he'll throw in some references to other classic Batman score moments (i.e. a nod to the Danny Elfman theme or the theme from Mask of the Phantasm).

Which is kind of how Zimmer's first Batman theme started out. I remember hm talking about how Batman didn't really "earn" his full theme until THE DARK KNIGHT and RISES.

I do think they'll move away from the Zimmer sound for JUSTICE LEAGUE and THE BATMAN somewhat.

This is what I'm thinking as well. Whether it's Giancchino or not. The Batman's leitmotif will build on Batman v Superman's.

It's what Zimmer did with TDKT to great effect marking the progression of time and the character's philosophies.
