Not much of a surprise after Simone teased about it.

The fan-favorite writer, who recently wrapped a well-regarded run on “Batgirl,” will introduce the new gang of rogues to root for in an ongoing series set to premiere Dec. 3, and she promises the same sort of “black humor and edginess” – and unpredictability – that won her previous run on the title a passionate following.

“It’s so fun to write these characters that are really poor role models,” Simone told Hero Complex in a recent phone interview.

Rather than “brightest heroes or the darkest villains,” the book lives in the gray area between, with “private detectives, mercenaries, bounty hunters, failed heroes,” she said.

There are still secrets about the Six’s new incarnation she isn’t yet willing to divulge, but she did discuss a third of the lineup: The master hunter Catman and magic-stealing teen goth Black Alice – who is more powerful than she is mature – will make their new New 52 debuts on a team with the same name (albeit in a different reality) as the one they were last seen with three years ago.

They will be facing a major question in what Simone called “the ‘Twin Peaks’ of superhero comics”: What is the secret?

Oh man! Gail LOVES Black Alice, she must be so pumped!

On one hand, I'm super pumped that Secret Six is coming back. It was taken from us in the previous book's prime. On the other hand, I'm getting really irritated and annoyed with Gail Simone being a one-trick pony and treating LGBT characters as nothing but gimmicks and she is really getting into hackish territory at this rate.

I never got to read the old run, but always heard great things. I hope DC releases some new trades collecting the run.

I'm going to miss Catman and Deadshot's chemistry. Love Black Alice. Pretty excited.

I feel the same way. The way she always takes the LGBT community for a ride by exploiting them in a sense and passing it across as "raising awareness" and "tolerance" to get brownie points always kinda rubbed me the wrong way.

Frankly because a lot of it is indeed exploitation. It's not really written as a way to represent a real character who just happens to be gay or trans as is the case with a lot of LGBT people I come across in real life. Instead it comes across as characters that are defined by their sexuality or gender first and foremost and everything else is secondary.

It just comes across as tasteless at times and this is coming from a heterosexual man. For the record though she wasn't the only one doing this. Mark Andreyko did it a lot during his Manhunter run too which took away from the otherwise excellent flow of that series to me. It was even more surprising since he's such an openly gay man.

Though I do have to say that I always did feel she was a borderline hack all along even during her so called brilliant Birds of Prey days. TBH Secret Six was the only thing she wrote that I really enjoyed.

If you would've told me that a book headlined by 3 b list Batman villains & written by Simone would've been one of my favorite of all time 15 years ago I would've called you a mad man. But everything about that title just clicked. Deadshot and Catman's crazy friendship, Ragman's crazy ass and Scandal and Bane's father/daughter dynamic.

It really was lightning in a bottle so good luck to them trying to replicate even half that awesomeness but somehow I don't see it being as effective this time around. Especially since in the previous volume previous DC continuity played a major part in the narratives and the New 52 universe is still finding it's footing.

The fact that everything Simone has written since has been boring as hell to me doesn't exactly bode well either. I'd keep an open mind I guess but I won't go out of my way to buy the first issue either.

You know, I'm wondering if we'd be hearing the same complaints about "gimmicks" if she were just writing straight couples. Personally, I rather doubt it. The double standard is really blatant and quite sad. Exploiting the LGBT community, don't make me laugh.

Are you saying their is no such thing as tokenism when creating minority character?

I think when I show my gay cousins some of my comics and they directly tell me they find suspect interpretation from Simone. Yeah it could count as something I view as exploitation because they explain to me why they are offended by it.

I'm a Dominican American. My hair is nappy and my skin is black. I know about discrimination as much as the next minority. So please don't insult my intelligence by at least not asking why I may have come to such a conclusion.

For the record I have this problem with minorities in comics in general as well. I think it's why I appreciated Multiversity so much. It was just about the characters despite the fact that the stereotypical straight white male didn't speak till the 3rd act.

It's Superman no question about it. He just happens to be black this time. It's definitely the spirit of Arthur in Aquawoman 100% but she just happens to be the Queen and not King of Atlantis. It's the Flash and Green Lantern without a doubt. Yet instead of best buddies they're more. However it doesn't come at the cost of Red Racer being a comic geek first and geeking out at meeting Superman.

His relationship well that's just another part of who he is and it makes me hope Morrison inverts Crisis tropes and has the Flash survive and come back this time. Thunderer is an Ultimate Thor analog in the fore front first and foremost but he also happens to be an aboriginal as well.

That's how minorities should always be handled in comic books. Their character comes before anything else based on the way some white guy (the majority of comic book writers) has written them.

Is not so much tokenism as it is the fact that a lot of writers don't know how to create a genuine voice for minorities in comic books. Morrison is one of the few that does. That's why he'll always be one of the GOATs.

Right, isn't that tokenism? They are just there to fill a quota, check a box, to show off how progressive someone thinks they are.

No because tokenism would be if they took the minority character and made him/her weaker at the expense of putting over the typical white male character and making the minority character seem less important. Just a tool to meet certain quotas.

Where as the characters Morrison has written are legit the same characters they are in Earth 0 in terms of their spirit, their core but they also happen to be minorities. It makes them as important as their white male counterparts and not come across as canon fodder.

The problem is that Simone has become such a one-trick pony with LGBT characters. And she used to be quite good at writing them, but nowadays it often comes out of place and treated for shock value such as the way she treated Batgirl's transgendered roommate. And instead of treating them as regular people first and foremost, she just goes off and inserts the millionth gay character into her book. If the world were the way Gail Simone writes her comics, at least half the planet would be gay.

And here's the thing, I have nothing against gay and minority characters. Comics really need those characters badly. Well written gay characters is a reason why I praise Greg Rucka's run on Batwoman and Brian Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim. But I will criticize when they insert these characters poorly like Archie's terrible Kevin Keller character or how Gail Simone treats gay people. It makes me wish sometimes that the world was a bit more progressive and just start writing gay characters as just characters first and foremost and treat them as the normal people that real life homosexuals are.

The difference between Andreyko and Simone is that at least Andreyko pretty much admitted what he did in Manhunter in his run (he even made fun of it with the last issue) and I don't recall him doing it again in his other books. Simone on the other hand keeps doing it again and again and again and again and again.

I love her first Birds of Prey run. The Brightest Day relaunch really wasn't that good, but her initial run was amazing IMO. I love her runs on Deadpool, the All-New Atom, and I even liked her Wonder Woman run. She used to be one of my favorite writers and I would have bought anything she wrote back in her peak.

The fact that everything Simone has written since has been boring as hell to me doesn't exactly bode well either. I'd keep an open mind I guess but I won't go out of my way to buy the first issue either.
I wouldn't call Simone boring. Ever since the New 52, she has been sooooooo awful. Her Batgirl run was awful, the Fury of Firestorm was awful, the Movement was awful. And the way she got put back on Batgirl infuriated me because I thought that she deserved to get fired and manipulated the comic book reading public into thinking that she deserved to continue writing the book.

Obviously, I'm not talking about Morrison. I'm talking about the first part of your post. " it is the fact that a lot of writers don't know how to create a genuine voice for minorities in comic books. "

Yeah I just realized that I completely misread your post.

I loved the SS run but the way they ended it for the Nu52 was stupid. Looking forward to this as it would probably be the only thing from DC I might read as I've lost interest over the past few years since the reboot.

I don't think I followed through with the ending of Secret Six. I think I stopped reading around the western themed issue/arc

How has this new run been? I remember hearing great things about Gail Simone's original series, has this one been up to the same quality?
