Source: A.M.P.A.S. December 15, 2006

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that seven films are in consideration for achievement in Visual Effects for the 79th Academy Awards®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

Casino Royale
Eragon
Night at the Museum
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Poseidon
Superman Returns
X-Men: The Last Stand

On Wednesday, January 17, the Academy's Visual Effects Award nominating committee will view 15-minute film excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for Oscar consideration.

Nominations for the 79th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at 5:30 a.m. PST in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2006 will be presented on Sunday, February 25, 2007, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network at 5 p.m. PST, beginning with a half-hour arrivals segment.

I say:
Pirates 2
Superman Returns
X3

This is gon' be neck and neck between SR and POTC. No one else has a chance.

What a ****ty list!

SR
X3
and the winner, Pirates

It's easily clear.

Davey Jones and the Kraken will be big for POTC 2.

X-Men 3 will probably focus on the Goldern Gate Bridge and Dark Phoenix destruction, along with other segments.

Casino Royal had the sinking house.

I haven't seen any of the others.

Casino ROyale had (big) VFX sequences
I thought they had practically none.

ANyways the big three will be
Definately POTC 2 and and for the second and thrid place most likely going to Poseidon , X3 and SR.

All these 4 movies have enormous complex VFX sequences .
POTC has to work with a multitude of CG characters as well as creating CG water. Not to mention the first use ( as far as i know) of the I-MOCAP where acting and MO-CAP are done in the same shot as opposed to a MOCAP stage.

X3 had to use several different VFX techniques to create all those efefcts in 9 months of post. THey used some new techniques as well , such as the de-Aging techniques.

SR : CG humans. The Holy grail . Even tough they haven't fully gotten there yet , it's still an impressive feat.

ANd Poseidon , while it seems like a simple movie was really a pain staking operation. ANyone who has the CineFex article on Poseidon will know just how much CG work was involved.

My vote goes to POTC though. The work they did on the second movie was really amazing. And it had life , those VFX. Can't say the same about SR :whatever:

Yeah, I think Pirates 2 will win. Didn't they win for the first movie as well

no wait...that was LOTR...right?

Pirates
Supes
The X-Kids

Pirates FTW.

They need to split this category into two sections like the VES awards have, which are Visual Effects in an Effects Driven Movie and Visual Effects in a Supporting Role, in this way movies like Casino Royale and Posiedon will be awarded for it's transparent effects alongside Pirates of the Carribean and Superman.

Anyways, of these movies I'd pick:

POTC2
Superman Returns
X3

with POTC2 winning this, Davy Jones and crew were amazingly done.

Keep in mind I have not seen Eragon, but since it looks like it will receive a critical drubbing, it wouldn't have a chance anyways.

Deam man Chest is taking it....That film had some Major Visual effects...Davy Jones crew, the Kraken,The ships,.....and Superman Visual Effects for Metropolist,The Earthquake,The huge landmass rising, and The plance sequece........its a toss up between SR and DMC.......X3 did have great visuals Golden gate bridge,Youthfullness CGI,etc

Casino Royale should not be nominated. They can't win for two scenes of CG.

It has to go the POTC2. I mean, c'mon, just look a t Davey Jones and tell me he doesn't impress. Go ahead, I dare ya.

Casino Royale won't be nominated. Only three films will. And, c'mon, its pretty obvious!

Supes
Pirates 2
X3

It's going to come down the Superman, Pirates, and some third nothing choice.

Superman Returns better win for best F/X.
IMO, it is the greatest visual effects movie of the year.

Dead Man's Chest comes close...

Supes has a good chance, but I'm sure it'll be Pirates. People are still impressed with Davy Jones.

I thought the stuff in Casino Royal was the best- as it was near completely unnoticable. The only film I can say that for, for sure. And X3 had by far the worste effects, with perhaps the exception being the de-aging at the beginning.

Maybe because they used old-school practical effects.
