I am in the camp that prefers a great film to just a faithful one. The ABC miniseries was very faithful to the book. But only an average TV movie. The Stanley Kubrick film changed almost everything about the book beyond the basic premise and character names...and it was one of the best horror films ever made.
So, I'll take Stanley Kubrick's The Shining to any remake, most likely. I simply doubt it could ever be as good. But if someone is willing to try a real cinematic adaptation of the book, I would still watch the movie and then decide. Rockwell is a good choice for the role, by the way.
Agreed. As any film may be an adaptation, it's still a film and its own medium. Kubrick made the right changes. Who seriously wants to see Jack suddenly turn sane and help his family get out only then to go back to insanity and die? It would be so unbelievable it would completey kill the build up of what the film would be trying to accomplish, same goes for Kubrick's film. The tv movie was more faithful and it sucked. Tough ****. Adaptation should not be done again. It's like doing another LOTR or Harry Potter movies all over again. They made the changes for a reason and it still goes 20 or 30 years later. Criticism in faithfullness is so goddamn overrated.
