The Snowman (Fassbender)

My review

Man this was a doozy to get through. It's a mystery thriller that got butchered from start to finish in many areas. Storywise, this movie is all over the place. It's like someone took the structure of Zodiac or Seven and literally cut it into pieces (which causes it to be convoluted and dumb if that makes sense). It feels like there were chunks of the movie was missing because of the messy editing. Even the acting was stilted and downright laughable at times. Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, and even J. K. Simmons with his fake accent couldn't save this. And for some reason Val Kilmer was in it and I really couldn't tell if he had his lines dubbed over. If I have any positives, it would be the cinematography. Some of the shots of Norway looked incredible even if some of them were edited to hell. Overall, it's a mess of a film. Don't be fooled by the trailer, it's the complete opposite of a David Fincher type movie.
3/10

There might be a very good reason why this movie turned out the way it did. Apparently, it got screwed with:

Having seen his other films, I'm more inclined to believe him than Trank personally.

It's a photoshop gag making it look like Alfredson tweeted that infamous Josh Trank tweet.

Here's my reaction to this film: thoroughly disappointed.

I'm glad I didn't read the novel before seeing this...I think it would have just added salt to the wound. I did that with "Gone Girl", read the book and then saw the film...it was a disappointing experience because you could literally "hear" everyone's head explode at the twist. haha And to know what was coming, I felt like I was on the outside of that experience.

I thought maybe the same would be here but, unfortunately, it was a very lacking twist. I'm not sure about anyone else but, I immediately called it. They used classic shot set ups/didn't even dub the killers voice in the trailer...there were also certain scenes that played out that you knew what the intent was. (The train car scene)

Overall, I will say that this film looked like it had promise. I think there was potential with the story but, as others stated, it was just very disjointed. All of the twists weren't shocking, you kind of knew what was coming before it played out. The ending, holy hell...they should have done something else.

I'm disappointed because I thought this was going to be THE cop thriller movie. I'm waiting for something to come along the lines of SE7EN etc etc that is just a captivating and thrilling cop narrative.

I would personally say pass on this film...my friend actually fell asleep in the theater and he's never fallen asleep during a film before. That was a little jarring. haha

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out.
Not sure if there is anything out there that is the next big cop thriller.
Can anybody think of any possibilities?

I just need to know... was it worse than the “other” snowman themed thriller, Jack Frost?

(That could mean the horror film Jack Frost or the family friendly Michael Keaton one... the jury is still out on which movie is more terrifying.)

Both of them are masterpieces compared to this one.

Saw this tonight I'm utterly disappointed.

Edit: A LOT of stuff from the trailer was cut. Jesus this looked like a whole other movie.

This wasn't a good Nordic Noir movie. It was pretty dull.

I'm not sure why there was no consistency in accents with the cast. The film is set in Norway yet the international cast all seem to be either doing their own attempt at a Scandinavian accent or their own accent.

The cast is full of talented actors supporting actors like Toby Jones, JK Simmons, James D'Arcy, Ted Hastings from Line Of Duty, typecast creepy sleazy guy David Dencik, Val Kilmer, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chloë Sevigny and Genevieve O'Reilly aka young Mon Mothma in the Star Wars films.

Hats off to all of you who watched this. Y'all can keep this ****

I tried watching last night and could barely make it through an hour. And that hour was so labored.

The only reason I watched it was because the Double Toasted review made it seem like it would be so bad that it's funny. And I did get a few chcukles, but this was just awful. By far the worst thing I've seen this year and maybe even last year. There is not 1 redeeming quality of this.
Even if they filmed the other 15% it still would've sucked because the acting was abysmal.

Avoid at all costs

My biggest problem with this movie is, why call it The Snowman, when you take essentially nothing from the book? Book was great, why not adapt it? Why change everything?

Ideally, they should've just reshot the scenes with Val Kilmer with a different actor, but they might not have had the money to do even that.

So I watched this last night, and it didn't make much sense to me. But then it also didn't hold my attention very well so it's possible I missed some stuff, lol. Still, the reveal of the killer was just like, "eh....ok?" I just don't get how it was possible to go so wrong with this director and this cast, but hoo boy what a waste of time.

Read the book one of these days. It's really good. Really twisty too. They kept essentially nothing of it, sadly. Still the killer in the movie, is the killer in the book too but...At least you'll get this story but good!

A couple mins in and there's already usage of ADR lines that are obvious lmao
