The Sopranos Final Nine

I smell a big steaming pile of gimmick.

What's really annoying is that the ending that should have us thinking for ages, we've all already figured out: This is how Tony constantly has to live his life. In a state of constant fear.

They could have achieved the exact same effect in a far better manner. This was one of the worst written episodes in TV history and sadly, purely a publicity stunt masquerading as an artsy, surprise finish.

alright - let's break it down - marc...I know you're a smart guy and a fan of the show..so.........

When the mob whacks a MADE guy in another family - especially someone high up - they usually use foreigners....

NON ITALIANS

Japanese, Jamaicans, etc. (or actual Italians from Italy)

This is a Sopranos precedent.

At the end of the finale....what did you see.....

the american (read: white american) guy in the members-only jacket. Looking like he was an old school 70's hit man.

then the guy that looked like he retired from the DEA/FBI - sitting in the corner. Also white american.

Then the black dudes who came in at the end (probably hired for insurance to make sure the job got done).

Phil's Capo - although wanting power himself would NEVER let the murder of a SKIPPER go unanswered.

Plus the WAY Phil got killed was considered a personal insult.

The camera work was done specifically the way Chase always does before a murder or significant happening.

Those were HIT MEN. and the family was KILLED.

Thus the fade to black AS SOON AS meadow walked in.

THAT'S what the HIT MEN were waiting for.

They were told to KILL the WHOLE FAMILY.

Damn...do you people REALLY need EVERYTHING spoonfed to you!?!?!?

^That was a nice suggestion as to what happened, but I need to "see" things chief.

I personally think the whole family got whacked at the end. It makes sense. I mean, they had music playing and everything and then when Tony looks at the door opening, everything blacks out. I think that means that Tony got hit with a bullet.

chances are their alive clearly, but life goes on was the point of the ending.

Does anyone know the name of the song at the end? That was a great song.

You mean "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey?

No kidding. I was on the phone for 20 minutes last night talking to one of my buddies who is a huge Sopranos fan, talking him down from being very dissatisfied thinking he got screwed (he did) to thinking it was a brilliant finish (it really wasn't). I work with 2 other Sopranos fans who will be chatting this up, I'm not looking forward to it if they think this was great.

Sorry, the more i think about it, the above post is correct. It was horribly written, and I could tell when they had the diverging possible storylines introdused (like at the choppy halfway point in the junkyard) and other stuff that made NO DAMN SENSE like AJ's sudden change at the end and that SUV fire, the "Chris" Cat bothering Paulie, and that B.S. ending for those who wanted to see Tony and his obnoxious family killed. I dont think anyone got whacked, they ate and went home. Thats it. But just in case no one ever wants to do a movie, that just so Chase had to have an defined ending where he can say "No, I implied they died".

lol. just saw a news report about this. LOL I'm not a soprano fan, more of a tenor fan but jeez you guys got screwed... ouch.

When see movies like this where the ending is open, do we complain? Not sure if the person lives or dies. We always call those brilliant.

The problem was that it was an awful open ending. It was a great show, which knew it was coming to an end (on its on accord, no less, not being canceled for poor ratings), yet it still gave no closure on anything. I know I sound like the typical fanboy here, but if you want to see a series finale with a great open ending, go watch the Angel finale.

The best explanation of the final scene I was able to find. Everything does check out:

"The guy at the bar in the fional scene is also credited as Nikki Leotardo. The same actor played him in the first part of season 6 during a brief sit down concerning the future of Vito. That wasn't that long ago. Apparently, he is the nephew of Phil. Phil's brother Nikki Senior was killed in 1976 in a car accident. Absolutely Genius!!!! David Chase is truly rewarding the true fans who pay attention to detail.

So the point would have been that life continues and we may never know the end of the Sopranos. But if you pay attention to the history, you will find that all the answers lie in the characters in the restaurant. The trucker was the brother of the guy who was robbed by Christopher in Season 2. Remember the DVD players? The trucker had to identify the body. The boy scouts were in the train store and the brothas at the end were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?).

Absolutely incredible!!!! There were three people in the restaurant who had reason to kill Tony and then it just ends. This was Chase's way of proving that he will not escape his past. It will not go on forever despite that he would like it to "don't stop". Not the fans!!! Tony would like it to keep going but just as we have to say goodbye, so does he.

Did you get that off NJO.com??? The guy at the bar was a first time actor, that scene was his first acting ever, hes a pizza ship owner from PA. He said his character was called, by Chase "Myster Man". There's a article as well.

Line from "Don't Stop Believing"

some will win, some will lose, some were born to sing the blues, the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on and on

I got a question: Did the FBI dude slept with another fellow agent to get info? I was wondering why she was piised.

You know... the show ended exactly like it ran. Left you empty-handed but not sure if you're wanting more or not.

Overall I didn't mind the ending. Very open-ended and up in the air. It leaves it up to the viewer to decide what happens (unless Chase makes a movie). Will Tony get wacked? Will he go to jail? Who knows?!?!?!

Not the best ending but very fitting for the show.

Im sure she was mad because an FBI agent just gave a mobster info on where Phil was to kill him

The ending was a copout, I want an end all be all ending. I don't want to try and figure things out or try to remember characters from 3 episodes ago, let alone 3 seasons ago. Just end it one way or another.

Was i the only one who thought that their cable had gone out, when the scene went black?
