The Sopranos Final Nine

The problem was that it was an awful open ending. It was a great show, which knew it was coming to an end (on its on accord, no less, not being canceled for poor ratings), yet it still gave no closure on anything. I know I sound like the typical fanboy here, but if you want to see a series finale with a great open ending, go watch the Angel finale.

This is the perfect comparasion of series finales Angel vs. The Sopranos. Angel was completely open, but was very satisfying, our heroes in an alley facing impossible odds, "I wanna slay the dragon" perfect, Angel was in the never ending battle, all the loose ends were tied up in regards to the season, but the war still rages on. The Sopranos really just added more loose ends to the end, will AJ f#ck up his chance at movie making and club owning, will Paulie kill the cat, what's the retaliation from NY for NJ killing Phil, what will come of Carmine turning rat, will Meadow learn to parallel park?

Did you get that off NJO.com??? The guy at the bar was a first time actor, that scene was his first acting ever, hes a pizza ship owner from PA. He said his character was called, by Chase "Myster Man". There's a article as well.

Line from "Don't Stop Believing"

some will win, some will lose, some were born to sing the blues, the movie never ends, it goes on and on and on and on

no I got it from Deadspin.

That's interesting. I wonder if the rest of that holds true.

You cant compare those two shows. They're really night and day in terms of style, execution, and tone. Soprano's basiclaly broke the mold in terms of what you could do in an episodic TV series. Angel followed a proven formula.
Sopranos MO for most of it's run has been to tease and head fake you. You had to know somehting was going to be weird with the finale just because that's how David Chase is. What he wanted to do has effectively worked to a T too. People will be debating this finale for years to come (unless they actually make a movie which I doubt).

Which is exactly what they want.

What proven formula did Angel follow?

well, I'll agree that Angel and Sopranos are very different. Sopranos started off as one of the best shows ever, and as the years went on, lots of things got stale and, especially after long breaks, things just never seemed as good as they were in the first few years. All of this led to a disappointing finale. Angel started off as a spinoff of another show. As time went on, it came in to its own and became an awesome show, leading all the way to its finale.

At first I felt cheated by the ending but then I thought about how I would've felt if the whole family got whacked or watched Tony get murdered and I realized it would've been pointlessly tragic and it would've destroyed the replay value of the series.

I would hate the ending too if it wasn't for the small details. The music playing pretty much summed up why Tony invested so much time and energy in his family. Why he got up every morning.

Do you want to see what would've happened if Tony got shot and how his friends and family would respond? You already saw that when Tony got shot by Uncle Junior. We already saw the aftermath of Tony getting shot. Who would cry real tears, who would cry crocodile tears, who would position for power, who would be completely lost without him.

The truth is we all know deep inside the Tony gets whacked but we can't witness it because we're seeing Tony's life from his eyes and once his brains are blown out everything goes black. We don't see the hysterical aftermath or the series of gunshots because Tony didn't.

To those who hated the ending, I'm curious what kind of ending would've satisfied you?

I've thought about this, do everything the same in the finale, except don't have any talk about Carmine being a rat, don't let Tony think there's anything wrong. In the final diner scene show Tony reacting the same way, watching his family come in, a little worried, you're not entirely sure you can trust anyone there, Meadow walks in. Then show Carmine with the FBI telling them everything, this recent crisis has shown he needs to get out. Cut back to Tony with Carmela and the kids having a nice family dinner everyone's all smiles, Tony thinks the crisis has been averted, but it really hasn't.

The camera should have done a closeup pan of the cat's fur to reveal a bugging device embedded within its body. :p

I'd have had Tony sit with his back to the door, get killed and the only thing you see is the reaction of the other three family members as they look at each other.

or

I'd have had the FBI guy who is now in a lot of trouble, spilling his guts to his superiors or Tony getting ratted out as the poster above said.

He either ends up dead or in jail, but you've got to show something. It was a cop out.

Was i the only one who thought that their cable had gone out, when the scene went black?

No. My wife yelled at me like I'd screwed up the DVR recording. I was so inspired by Tony Soprano, I beat the snot out of her. ;)

Damn right...these women need to quit mouthing off. :o

Though I am still pissed that we never learn what happens to Silvio. Does he ever come out of the coma, or is he just a vegetable for life? He was always my favorite character....just real indifferent about ****, shrugging everything off like, "do whatever", which is why I hated that he got popped.

He wakes up on tour with a famous rock band, where he was put for protective custody.

Tony Soprano's blood.

I would've liked to have seen Tony popped by assasins in the Bada Bing, lying bleeding on the floor, gasping for breath. then the Chris Cat walks up and sits on Tonys face, and smothers him. Then Paulie comes back and the cat bolts out the door as walks in and he see's Tonys dead body. He told Tony about those damn vermin smothering people.

He was laughing it up in Miami . . . I love it!

So, what's next for the rest of them? They're all typecast as the Sopranos until they die. Any of them even attempts to do a new tv show or movie, we're just going to see them as those characters.

Pine Barrens....arguably the funniest Sopranos episode is on A&E now

Gandolfini has a production deal with HBO, and is Suppose to be starring in a Hemingway film. Edie Falco is a brilliant actress so she shouldn't have a hard time finding work.

Word is now that they're gonna pick up from the end and make a ****in movie

I dunno what to say.

I hated the ending. It left so many questions unanswered and ive heard rumors about them possibly making another season. Is this true??

The lesson here is stop anticipating the destination more than the journey itself.

Life will pass you by and before you notice everything goes black. It's over.
