The Stephen King Thread - Part 1

Why would you want to download something that isn't even finished?

Wasn't there supposed to be a remake of It?

It was in pre-production, but, all of the relevent parties have gone silent.

In a way, I am happy: while I wanted to see a darker version of - even thought I love the tv miniseries-I was concerned about their intention. Condendsing a 1,ooo page book into a 2.5 hour film requires a lot of discipline, otherwise, the gem (the story) shatters. I learned this from experience: I made a bet with a friend that I could condense 'Salem's Lot to a 140min film. I won, but, dear heavens, it took a lot of time, energy & consideration (what to show, what to hint at, what to have happen offscreen, etc.) But, 'Salem's Lot is 600-something pages, not 1093...........my hair would turn grey if I had to adapt IT.

Speaking of It, I'm just about finished reading it after picking it up every so often the past couple of months. Regarding the ending, it's pretty clear Stephen King was heavy into drugs when he wrote that (as a lot of his work was back then). Reading the stuff involving It's true form is like the ramblings of someone who smoked their weight in weed.

Even reading Room 1408 is like based on a major drug trip :hehe:

or a Lovecraft fan.

In the case of King, both.

Have you read The Cannibals? If not, check it out here.

Apartment dwellers find themselves trapped inside their building. This novel was the genesis for Steve's later novel, Under the Dome.

Afterlife out in print

Back in December you could listen to King read a new short story called Afterlife while attending the UMASS in Lowell. Well, now you can read the story yourself. It’s published in volume 14, number 4 of Tin House.

Mister Mercedes is more or less done

Here is the full interview from Parade. One thing that cought my eye is this:

He continues to write accessible stories at a remarkable rate: A sequel to The Shining, titled Doctor Sleep, will be published in September, and he has “more or less” completed his first hard-boiled detective tale, Mister Mercedes. A series based on his 2009 novel Under the Dome will air on CBS later this summer, and his musical-theater collaboration with John Mellencamp, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, will begin what King terms a “road show tour” of American cities in the fall.

I wonder if Mister Mercedes will resemble the George Stark stuff from The Dark Half.

I love more King than I dislike. The dude can write. Screw the literary snobs who look down upon the guy.

My absolute favorites are:
IT
Salems Lot
Christine (so good. Needs more love)
Pet Sematary
The Stand
Lisey's Story (another waaaay underrated book. Absorbing and tragic).
The Dark Tower series
Nightmares and Dreamscapes (many consider it his weakest anthology. I love the variation.)
The Long Walk
Firestarter
Skeleton Crew

Novels

1. Salem's Lot
2, IT
3. The Dark Half
4. The Shining
5. The Stand
6. Duma Key
7. Black House

Compilations

1. Night Shift
2. Four Past Midnight
3. Skeleton Crew

Screen/Teleplays

1.Storm of the Century
2. Rose Red

Short Stories

"One for the Road"
"The Night Flier"
"They Grow on You"
"Sometimes They Come Back"

Novellas

I recently read 'Salem's Lot, while certainly not my favorite of his works it was enjoyable enough. It definitely had its moments.

Is it just me or has King been writing more lately?

Depends on which period you compare with. Perhaps he's writing more compared with his output the years after the accident in 1999. But in the 80's I remember he put out more than one book a year quite often. Besides, Revivial might be something that won't be out until 2015 if Mister Mercedes comes out next year

I don't think Jack Sawyer #3 is happening without Straub on board.
