The Stephen King Thread - Part 1

The only Stephen King book I've ready so far is 'Salem's Lot. I'm torn between reading The Stand or The Shining next. Anyone have any suggestions?
I second (3rd, 4th, 10th?) The Stand, still his best book.

Length of Mr. Mercedes

New info about Mr. Mercedes from the moderator of King's board.

It's typical length of a crime genre novel, but would be more of a smaller length novel for Stephen. This is only the first draft, though, so it's too early to post anything about exact page numbers.

He's not wrong. I've enjoyed quite a few Clive Barker books. :)

If you buy Doctor Sleep from Stephen King Catalog you get an extra cover by Glenn Chadbourne.

I am so ready to read this. I am rereading The Shining right now to catch back up. :D

AARP has an excerpt of the book. It reminds me a lot (stylistically) of Father Callahan's odyssey from Wolves of the Calla.

Mister Mercedes too creepy?

Mister Mercedes is mentioned in an article about King and Doctor Sleep in USAToday.

Next for King is a non-supernatural suspense novel, Mister Mercedes, about a deranged terrorist with a bomb. He says he began it before the Boston Marathon bombing, but it's "too creepily close for comfort."

I don't care if it's scary or not. I'll read anything King writes. :)

I already got my copy!!
AND I got it for 25% off! Booyah!

*opens up the the first few pages, smells that new-page smell*

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Believe it or not, I was at Giant Eagle grocery shopping, and I just happened to walk down the bread aisle adjacent to books and magazines, and a young employee was just randomly putting copies on the shelf. It was obviously a mistake, but I wasn't about to tell her. So I snagged one, put it in my cart, thinking that no cashier would actually scan this (nor would it properly scan, because some items have an error if they're before the release date), but BOOM, it scanned, I used my Giant Eagle card, got it for $22. :hrt:

I'm on page 122. Guys, this is quite seriously his best novel in 15 years.

Yes. The Shining was always my favorite novel of his, so that's great news.

It feels like his old writing. It's hard to explain. I'm gonna be up all goddamn night. I have to get up at 6AM for work. This is going to suck. :csad:

As I will not be able to pick up a copy for a while, I have an inquiry for those who have read it:
A while back, King said in an interview there was a Salem's Lot easter egg in the book. Is there one in the book and if so,what is it, precisely?
