The Superman Look: Shaping Superman

I like Alex Ross' Superman. He just looks big, massive, and burly, not so much like a wrestler, but more like a construction worker.

I hate AR's Superman. He always looks old, fat and depressed.

Nah, he doesn't look fat although he does look a bit older. AR is a great artist.

I agree he's a great artist, but he hasn't got a good sense of proportion. By that I mean, he tends to go wayyy overboard .. with everything. He doesn't have the artists eye for when to stop, when to hold back. It's like he has no internal editorial skills. His art is like hearing a lead guitar player riff through the entire song. AR isn't tasteful in what he does.

Not to mention he draw the "S" shield way too big, that it's distraction. He did the same for Bat too. And he can't make women look good. His drawing on Wonder Woman make Chyna look like Cindy Crawford. :p

not to me

You think his art is BAD in itself or is it that you don't his rendition of characters?

Anyway, I generally like Ross's art, especially in "Superman: Peace on Earth" and the superman poster posted in this thread. There are times when I feel he draws/ paint his \s/ is too big or looks abit old, but overall I think he's great. I think his style works for some characters and not others ( I don't like his Flash most of the time, I think it's how he draws the mask).

he does great artwork... I just don't like the way he draws Superman.

Same here. He's a great artist & all, but a lot of his work really suck too. Even artist like him can draw a horrible looking character.

I love the way Alex Ross draws Superman. I like his older version with the big S symbol. But what I don't like is Ross's Batman. He draws his Superman as old, but still muscular. His Batman is just fat.

I prefer his Batman over Superman... he makes Superman look like he's in his 50's

If you ask me, he draw them both in the same physique in my eyes. Not to mention their chest emblem big too. But I kinda like his Batman than Superman as kak-kak say. ;)

i know a lot of people are complaining about the suit, but one of my biggest complaints about Supes's appearance is actually his haircut/hairstyle. he looks perfect as Clark, but i think we all agree that he looks a bit like SuperBOY instead of SuperMAN and i don't necessarily think it's his face that gives his boyish looks but his hair. i seriously think they need to give him a trim for the sequel...look how much of a difference a haircut can make...

who here agrees and who here thinks i'm nuts and who here thinks this is a dumb thread?

I prefer the shorter one.

Please read this very carefully, as I know if this gets misread, it will cause a backlash...
Back about 7-10 years ago, Patrick Warburton had about the perfect Supes BODY. He had that big, burly, "lumberjack" type body that Alex Ross tries to draw. Even Ross, sadly, makes them just a little too realistic, and they look like they are soft and doughy.
I heard Warburton on Howard Stern's radio show say that back during the "Seinfeld" days, he benched 450 for reps. That's pretty impressive.
Again, not his face, but the body he had about 7-10 years ago.
And, yes, like I have offered in other threads, they need to get rid of the 1970's mop of hair that Routh had in SR.

I like it shorter but parted on the other side to give help to the change from Clark to Sups. plus I think it make him look better somehow

Routh was to thin, they need someone with a thick build like Welling.

Yes, Routh put on muscle, but not quite enough. Superman isn't all about the muscles, but he still shouldn't have a small frame. Whoever they get needs to have a frame like Welling or Bale.

I'm gonna guess that he just doesn't like AR's version of Superman. I happen to think it's awesome.
