El Cid is one of the most heartbreaking films I've ever seen. And it's an epic. Heston at his finest. It's what really modeled Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven.

Hopefully more Gladiator than KoH, lol.

I'll add it to my movies to watch list

Would you like me to start a thread dedicated to appreciating El Cid so as to atone for the blasphemy of not including it here alongside 10 Commandments and Ben-Hur?

What was he like?

He was nice. I only said hi to him and then he left. He was a guest of honour at a famous parade here in southern California some years ago.

It's definitely more Gladiator (in a brutal sense) than Kingdom of Heaven.

Apparently, after walking out from seeing El Cid at sixteen, Ridley wanted to make an earlier period film -- which is Kingdom of Heaven. The storyline's are identical.

Yea...no one will ever remember that Moses guy:huh:

the movie not Moses story itself. The acting and writing isnt that great, the special effects is the only thing very memorable from the movie

I can still watch Ben-Hur without having to be like it was pretty good for an old movie.

The Ten Commandments was a good movie, if a little dry. It was almost the 1950s equivalent to the modern day summer blockbuster. Big special effects and an awesome spectacle. But the story and the characters aren't nearly as deep as Ben-Hur, and the later film has some big action sequences too. The chariot race holds up even today, and certainly better than some more recent action sequences (like the Pod Race from The Phantom Menace).

Ben-Hur wins this by a significant margin. It, Gladiator, and Spartacus are the textbook examples of the great ancient epic.

I've always figured the Pod Race from Phantom Menace was inspired by the Ben-Hur chariot race, but the Pod Race, and the Phantom Menace as a whole, is nothing compared to Ben-Hur.

The Ten Commandments

I am more familiar with this film, even though I've seen Ben-Hur. But Ten Commandments gets my vote.

It has been awhile since I've seen either one, but I'll have to give it to Ben-Hur. Both pretty damn good, though.

The Ten Commandments. A lot of people (like my dad) like the parting of the Red Sea the best. Me? I think the best scene is the giving of the Ten Commandments.

Ten Commandments by a mile.

Pharaoh: "You will be like my dog, or my horse, or my hawk... only I will love you more... and trust you less..."

Nefertiri: "He spurned me... like a strumpet in the street!"

And of course...

Moses: "So let it be written..."

Don't forget, "Moses, oh Moses. You stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!"

:woot:

And yummy Yvonne De Carlo:woot:. I always thought Moses got the better end of the deal there.
