The Themes and Metaphors of "Batman Forever"

There is some homoeroticism in Batman Forever. No question. Now can we please look at other elements of the film?

Anyone else notice that Robin had an earring in his right ear? In the SE of Batman Forever, it says it was Schumacher's idea.

And how about the scene where Riddler and Face are jumping around like school girls and hugging each other.

But there's also a scene where Two Face kisses spice.

that was just a friend kiss, like any gay guy would give one of his female friends...no wonder Gilda wasnt with Harvey in the movies...she must have found out about his...lifestyle :o

I really do hate it when people come into threads about Forever and just go "NO ITS TEH GAY!?!!!! LOL NIPZ", yeah thats great you think that, but shut up and let people actually talk about the elements they like of it.

I think the Riddler was used and missued. The clues and suchlike actually built to nothing, there was no revellation, but the first time he's collecting all the puzzles, it's quite enthralling, until they come to nothing:(

To ab-so-loo-tay-lay nothing. That's true. Carrey was gtreat if you ask me, but there was no real worthy riddles in the movie.

The riddler is the best batman villain, as he's the best to show the original idea of batman as THE WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE, unfortunately the film lacked that side of the character.

Carrey served his purpose great... to entertain! which he always does, obviously he was different to the normal Riddler but if anyone else was in that role, it would be boring as hell.

Yeah...the clues didn't really lead to much, only The Riddler's true identity. But when I think about it, there's not really anything else the riddles could have led to. But now that I think even harder, the reveal to Batman of Riddler being Nygma really added no dynamic nor did it change the story in any way. If his identity weren't revealed by Batman in the cave, Batman would have found out it was Nygma as soon as he apprehended him. They could have done a bit more but I still think Riddler was a more well done character than Face.

yea, thats what made me laugh! How could Batman NOT REALIZE that Nygma was Riddler?!?!?!?!

Rebirth: Bruce Wayne/Batman finally becoming secure of himself and his decisions, Vengeful Dick Grayson reborn as Robin a man who believes in justice and not revenge, Edward Nygma going from an awkward low level scientist to a confident & proud CEO and megavillain. Oh and of course the obvious change in production design lol. Gotham itself is reborn as a more vibrant city as opposed to the morose and bleak one from the past within the context of the fim's world. Probably due to the success of Batman's war on crime.

even though there are decent aspects about this film, i just didnt care for kilmers portrayel. now if Keaton were given the chance to do a darker version of this, then we'd have somethin. but forever has the neon, boring kilmer, jim carrey going insane, twoface was joker, cornyass lines, just no. i wont deny that once in a whole i get in the mood to watch this for memory's sake, but as a batman film i just dont think its that great.

LMFAO that picture is makin me laugh hysterically! twoface looks like a ****** in that pic! this part always makes me laugh actually "happy halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen heheheheheh!" lame, but hilarious!

and i heard the ring for robin was schumacher trying to make robin look "hip".

and as for the riddlers riddles being dumb, is it just me or are the riddlers riddles ALWAYS dumb? never cared for the riddler, he just doesnt make sense.

Thank You, Cain

So I guess it just WAS too much to ask to get some sort of intellectual discussion about "Batman Forever"

It can be done...if people weren't so quick with the usual "NEON! NIPPLES! GAHHHH" bulls**t.

YES! for the love of god YES I GET IT. "Forever" isn't the best Batman film...but Christ, stupid me for thinking we could get past it JUST this once...:cmad:

Talking about Batman Forever is like talking about a big pile of s**t (literally)...sure, it may have possibly had some value once, but the final product is well...s**t :o

Well if you think that then stay out of BF threads! No one is forcing you to talk about it, or even acknowledge its existence, but let us talk about.

I think BF is crap but I have soft spot for it cos it made me become a big Bat-fan. I don't hate much as I hate B&R.

Batman Forever has value. It puts into perspective as to how much some people just don't get Batman. Also, it's unintentionally hilarious seeing how unintentionally gay The Riddler is.

But it's gay! And that's wroooong!!

If a movie has any homosexual undertones whatsoever, it is therefore a bad movie, especially if it's Batman who is clearly the most hetrosexual character ever.

No one in here has ever said being gay is wrong...being a big gay stereotype in a movie full of big gay stereotypes though, that's wrong...

No, it's just that...The Riddler should not be flaming and wearing a tiara. If filmmakers want to make something like Brokeback, fine, all the power in the world to them. But don't inject homoerotic subtext into characters that have never had them before.

I'll use Bryan Singer's films as an example. X-Men had homosexual undertones there and it worked quite well. No one really had a problem with it. Apt Pupil, on the other hand, handled it badly, the homosexual undertones didn't belong and worsened the entire film.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
